Jon's Second Grow, First Grow Journal, Soil Grow Autos & Photoperiod

So here are a few pics, I started 2 gold leaf seeds about 48 hrs ago. As I mentioned I put them in wet paper towels I try to use rainwater but otherwise 6.8 pH... probably doesn't matter much but I like to minimize risks as much as I can and try to mimic nature. Of course nature doesn't wrap seeds in paper towels, then stick them in an old cd case and a baggie, but at least I'm using rain water lol. When you're done it looks something like this.

Next to it is a clear plastic cup (great idea/reminder Jon!) filled half way with light warrior and then tipped on its side. I normally do this out in the garage but for the sake of pics we're in my kitchen.

After 48 hrs or so of storing the cd vertically, this morning one of the 2 seeds was ready. The 2nd has just sprouted and will be ready tomorrow. I don't like them to go too long, they grow fast and the tap root can get itself in trouble in 3-4 days.

As you can see the tap root is perfectly straight. I simply pick it up, lay it on top of the soil in the half filled cup, gently fill in on top of it, and it's done. I cover the top of the seed a bit, it will probably be above ground later today.

As you see I simply put the clear cup inside a red cup, your window method seems better to me but I've used this in the past and it's been fine and it's simple. I'd forgotten all about that until I read your journal! It's a scary mix, a lifelong stoner relying on his memory of grows long ago lol

Speaking of awesome tricks, your idea of placing an empty container before filling the transplant pot is so simple and brilliant I can't believe I've never run across that before!

Hope this isn't a mess, it's my first picture post here in probably 6-7 years or more. They used to have a preview button... ed note it was a mess so I deleted it and found the preview button, this looks better take care!

Thanks for all the input, I sincerely appreciate it. We all develop those methods that work best for us, I just toss out mine as I come across them, lol. Good stuff. I checked her trichomes again and got this absolutely beautiful trichome shot. She's still not ready. To me it's all trichs, cuz she's looked ready for a while. But clearly she is not. So onwards we go!

Nice trich pick.

Camera or microscope?
Thanks VG, yeah a lot going on in that picture. I'm gonna turn that one into a cover for my bass amp. I found a company that does it. I used the microscrope camera. It connects to my phone via wifi and the photos from the app get stored in my photos. It's a TAKMLY microscope, $40 on Amazon. Works great. Only down side is you got to put it on something to get a non blurry picture. Maybe someone has a steady enough hand to hold the microscope on a spot and take a picture with the other hand, but that someone is not me. Lol.

Grow Day 137

Flower Day 58 (with notes see below)

Alrighty. We somehow have successfully come to chop time without screwing it up. I say somehow, when the somehow is obvious - I had a lot of help. Much of that help came from this forum. So we'll just begin this post like this:

A sincere and heartfelt THANK YOU to every 420 member who provided opinion, direction, correction, or otherwise over the course of my grow. Your commentary has been invaluable. I won't single anyone out cuz I know I'll forget someone, but y'all know who you are. I highly doubt I'd be harvesting this absolutely beautiful plant were it not for you guys. I can never thank you enough.

:Namaste:

Ok, so on to where we are. Sadie is between 5 and 10% amber. Her buds are dense like diamonds. I am a tiny bit concerned with bud rot the longer I let her go. I have five fans including an oscillating fan on her the entire time of flower and the Rh has never gotten above 55%. I am basically certain I'm okay at this moment but am getting a bit wary.
Which leads us to the next point: Flowering time. I list it as day 58 today. That is based on 58 days since I first noticed the tiniest actual budlet when the plant was outside and had already decided it was going to flower. This explains why in the ten days or so previous to seeing that budlet I was training the plant through what seemed like an unusual explosion of daily growth. Point being I believe I trained her THROUGH the stretch. It was approximately ten days, which matches up pretty well with the number of days the same strain in the scrog stretched. So I believe it is more accurate to think of today as day 68 of flower, not 58. I will keep the header the same for the sake of consistency in the journal and cuz some people really do count flower that way, but at least we all know the caveat. And it makes more sense anyway. She's ready, and it's basically almost 70 days. About what I figured despite the 45 day fantasy that HSC is on. Lol. And if they meant 45 from post stretch, we're right on.
Now onto drying her: I am using my Yoda-given old school drying and curing method, and that begins with a slow dry. I also have the Sour Apple to consider since she can no longer be outdoors due to the heat. I decided to clean out the Gorilla/scrog tent completely, other than hydrogen peroxide-ing the entire tent before I grow in it again. But I can certainly dry buds in it even if there's residual pollen on the walls. And the Gorilla is WAY better in terms of my ablilty to control the environment. So the pictures show you where I'm drying Sadie. The screen will come down lower so I can reach it. The 2x4 scrog frame and legs will be out completely. The dehumidifier will be running. The fans, other than the upper two on the wall, will also all be running. They are carefully positioned to that they all blow their air along the bottom of the tent, along the walls, in a circle going all the way around, including intaking the AC air a bit. All in a line designed to create a vortex that will rise to the also engaged exhaust fan. The temperature will be around 64 degrees with a moving vortex of air that doesn't hit the buds directly. The Rh will be around 40-45%. And the buds will be hung with plenty of room between them. I will post a picture when that's done, but I thought for any new growers who may be interested I'd post my prep and intention. This also allows me to free up the Topolite tent where Sadie currently lives for the Sour Apple, and she can finish by herself in there under a longer light cycle, like 18/6. I hope the Sadie buds will go 8 to 10 days on the dry. I will trim off all the fan leaves and about half of the sugar leaf before I hang them.

So there you go, that is my drying prep. Pictures below. Chop to follow very soon.

GROW DAY 137

FLOWER DAY 58 (OFFICIALLY)/68 (UNOFFICIALLY AND LIKELY MORE ACCURATELY, SEE PREVIOUS POST NOTES)

Ok so pretty much everyone agrees she's ready. So just note the one bud top picture. See that new growth explosion? All over the bud? They will just keep doing that forever I think cuz it ain't stopped in a while. Look how fat they've become. They're dense like diamonds. But man do I want to just keep watching them get fatter. I could, too, at least another day. But again, with no experience with buds this big and dense I am now on strict Yoda orders and my boy in Oregon is going to FaceTime the harvest with me. So grateful to have such an amazing resource, and his White Tahoe Cookies is as good as there is in the world. SO recommend that strain if you see it. Anyway, Yoda agrees with me, take zero chances with bud rot and harvest tonight and hang them. Thus, 9 pm. I'll post the finish hang before sealing the tent back up.

That's gonna leave the Sour Apple by herself in the Sadie tent. Lmao. Talk about an auto living large.

Here is the final photographic record of the plant before the chop, and no, I did not turn off the reds.
Please enjoy, this is primo bud porn if I do say so myself. *Maybe* I have a plant of the month entry?

So a few whole plant and closeups on gigantic colas, no repeats, and then the bud top showing what every single bud on the plant has been showing for ten solid days now. It has been astounding to watch. I'm going to post a quickie cool lifecycle of this plant later cuz it's been so unusual to my experience and it'll be fun.

Please reference my thank you message in the previous post everyone! It gets maudlin to keep repeating such a real thank you, so it'll do til the end I hope!

THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadie Harvest Update
Hanging to Dry!!!

This post is basically just pictures to show you guys the harvest from Sadie. The closeups are all blurry to some extent. I am not willing to give them more light than you see here, even for one minute for these dumb pictures, lol. My understanding is that light is the mortal enemy of my drying buds so I operate as such.

So there's a picture of the overall haul. By my estimation, when dried and final trimmed, it's going to come in around 12 ounces. There are about six of the GIGANTIC clusters of buds which are around 2 ounces apiece when dried, again by my estimation only. Plus a whole crapload of others. The smallest bud when dried will be around the size of a ping pong ball. As you can see, there is hardly any flarf. All the shit buds became real buds due to the middle being so open and not one bud blocking another. What a methodology, it's my new photoperiod go to and I can't WAIT to start the three Hulkberrys! Anyway I may be off but I'd bet my life it's significantly over 8 ounces, that's a no brainer, and that, if true, means I pulled half a pound plus from one plant! This is par for the course for many of you guys, I know this, but for me, it's one of my first HOLY SHIT moments! It's also a great consolation prize after what happened to the scrog.

Also three blurry pictures of closeups of various parts of the haul. I was trying to show how huge and dense these clusters of buds on the main branches turned out to be. Without light and without a wooden frame to lean on any more, these were the best closeups I could get. Sorry for the blur, but it's just not worth re-doing and hitting them with more light.

Then there's one picture of a badass looking leaf I came across and had to take a picture of. This was the first one I found. There were dozens more like this, all small ones like this one. Tucked away. Awesomely beautiful, had to include. Never seen the purple and neon green tiger striped leaves before, and I'm SO in love.

Anyway, when the harvest goes to the next step I will post again to show my harvest methodology in case anyone is interested and for my own records. Until then we dry. As slowly and evenly as possible. I'm hoping they go eight days or even ten, but we'll see. One thing doing it the way I'm doing it - you can immediately tell if you need to reposition a fan cuz you can immediately see if any buds are moving. If they're moving the entire screen moves. I want ZERO movement, ie, no direct fan air hitting the buds themselves, but I can feel the updraft. Just not enough to move the buds. Perfect. That's what I have. The temperature is about 72 degrees by day and about 68 at night just from ambient temperature. The humidity is as low as I can get it: 43%. Not terrible. It'll do. I am unconcerned about bud rot at these environmental conditions. And they will remain constant exactly at these numbers till they're dried.

Oh, one more thing, and this is a special inclusion specifically for @Emilya. The last picture is a shot of Sadie's root ball. This is a five gallon pot. I dumped all the dirt I could and even dug a little. Everything you see in that picture is 100% root ball. After 130 something days, you sure BETTER have a root ball like that, but I've had that for weeks and weeks. It is a visual tribute to the perfection of Emilya's watering technique, and worthy of a special shout out. It is not lost on me that the reason she turned out so good is specifically because she had a very well developed root system. THANK YOU EMILYA!

HARVEST SUCCESSFUL. NO SEEDS. DANK ASS DENSE BUDS ALL OVER THE PLACE.

WE DID A PRETTY DOGGONE GOOD JOB GUYS. WELL DONE.

Sadie Drying Update

I think maybe I have learned something in the last three days. I am drying Sadie in the tent as shown previously. I know many people do this. My own Yoda is a proponent of this. I did it this way on my first grow and the dry was spectacular.

HOWEVER - I suggest you turn your exhaust fan down as low as it can possibly go while still achieving negative pressure.

I also believe I have too many fans. There is no air moving on the buds themselves but the vortex at the bottom is fairly strong.

So I turned down the exhaust fan to 2, the lowest setting that still gives me negative pressure. And I canned four of the five fans, so now it's one fan, one dehumidifieir, and the exhaust minimized.

I did this because I found that the exhaust fan, when there's nothing in the damn tent, pulls the air up stronger than I thought. Still not enough to make the buds move from moving air, but way faster than I thought. As a result the buds were drying faster than I liked. This is problematic for a number of reasons, so hopefully the adjustments will slow the process down a hair, like by at least a day or two. I am also going to can the dehumidifier I think, depending on what I see today.

After three days I have no bud rot, and that was my main concern with super dense buds in clusters I didn't want to pare down. If I don't have it yet, I ain't getting it at this point. There has been enough water removed from the buds. No longer a concern.

Soon these babies hit the first pre cure container. One step closer.

BTW - the test buds, while uncured, get you so high I couldn't finish a whole regular sized bowl. This weed is supposed to come in (according to HSC) at 26-30% THC, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say I definitely squeezed that range out of them. The worst bud of the harvest being too strong to start the day with a whole bowl is definitely a good sign.

Jon.. what a beauty.. ❤️
fanfeckintastic job.. thanks for sharing matey.:)

EPILOGUE:

Well we made it to the end of my first grow journal. 14 plants and 47 pages later, lol.

There's so much to say about this grow I could go on all day, so I tried to think in terms of what might be the most helpful for young growers like me. There are tons of us. We depend very much (I know I do) on the help we get from the experienced growers here. I will have a separate thank you section at the end.

So here's a couple things I learned on this grow that I found significant, for what it's worth:

ON AUTOFLOWERS:
- Autos can EASILY fill a five gallon pot with a full and complete root ball. The "don't use a pot bigger than a three gallon pot for autos or you're just wasting space" idea that I've heard and read many times is complete crap. Don't buy it. If you're watering correctly, you'll fill a three in no time and the plant's growth will be maxed because the roots will be maxed. My humble opinion is that if you want autos to yield, use fives, not threes.
- Autos also can (and in my opinion SHOULD) be transplanted/up-potted. Mine go from Dixie cups to threes or fives depending on what I'm using. I personally wouldn't recommend up-potting an auto twice, like Dixie to one to five or something, because their life cycles are, imho, too short for that. And if you're watering correctly there's no need for it anyway.
- I grew a total of nine autos and have my tenth growing now. Five different strains. And one of the significant consistencies to all five strains was that all five took nutrients WAY better than photos. They could take high doses consistently, they seemed to PREFER it that way, and they took whatever I threw at them. This was way surprising to me as I expected finicky like every damn photo i n the world, lol. So I'm gonna say that my experience says if you're using nutes, start them early and load them up. I use veg nutes till I see the first buds forming, then switch to flower nutes with molasses for the rest of the time.
- The other significant consistency was that at least under powerful lights, all five of the strains I grew or am growing require Cal Mag (I use plus Iron from Humboldt's Secret) MUCH more consistently than photoperiod plants. Not sure if this is a function of autos, or autos under powerful lights, but sunshine or LED, it was necessary to give them a tsp. of Cal Mag with almost every watering. I never went more than two in a row without a Cal Mag hit.

ON PHOTOPERIODS:
- Make sure to triple check your tent for light leaks before you ever begin. Strongly suggested. Lol.
- Stress is as big a contributor to a plant going hermie as light leaks are.
- When using very powerful, professional level lights, even photoperiod plants use up the Calcium and Magnesium more quickly than they would otherwise. Inho, one is well served to keep an eye on this.
- Photoperiod plants seem to like the occasional flush, like in mid veg, and then before flipping them to bud, and maybe one more time during budding around halfway through, for example. Resets the plant to some extent I believe, and if you use molasses it's almost a requirement. Molasses will stay in the soil and eventually or sooner cause you Ph issues. Potentially. I found an occasional flush with clean water works wonders.
- It may be a less than great idea to bite off more than you can chew. Just because you have the space and facilities doesn't mean you have to have so many plants you spend more time with them than your family. Lol. !4 at once was too much for me and likely would have been even if I were not wheelchair bound. By the way, my nickname is Speedy since my accident. :laughtwo::laughtwo::laughtwo: My suggestion is to know your limitations and work within them.
- Having a watering system that works is VITAL and MUST BE. My suggestion is to read @Emilya on watering. She's got the goods for any situation you might encounter, and trust me, she's almost always right. I use her system, combined with a touch of @Bill284's, religiously. My root balls as a result are INSANE. Better roots = better buds. There is no exception to that statement that exists.
- When using a new light, my strong suggestion is to approach it the same way you would a new nute. Start small and work your way up. It's very easy to light burn your plants if you aren't careful, especially when using a light you are not yet familiar with. Also to that end I highly suggest downloading one of several free light meter apps and use it to dial in your lights. It is better than your feel and your intuition and your eyes, trust me. I use Korona but there are many.

So there's a few observations that I personally found valuable. Let's move onto yield.

The only plant's yield left to talk about is Sadie's. She yielded 3.87 ounces of perfectly trimmed, legitimate buds. There's a picture of the whole in a basket, then there's a few closeups of various finished trimmed buds. Was I disappointed in the yield? Sure, a little. Who isn't? Every time? Lol. But honestly, I learned that I SUCK at estimating my own yields. I'm decent at estimating other people's, but not my own. I expected closer to 8 ounces out of Sadie rather than basically 4. Still, her quality is off the charts. Even without curing other than my precure thing, she already smokes beautifully, stinks to the holy heavens, and has taste for days. Sweet as hell with cotton candy as the predominant flavor and all kinds of complex citrus going on behind it, not to mention a very deep background of just plain DANKNESS, and just a *tiny* touch of gassy. It's amazing bud by anyone's standard. It destroys every single bud at every dispensary in this state, I can tell you that. I may never grow bud this good again. It's honestly among the finest I have ever smoked in my life, and I've been smoking 38 years. I know it's mine, but it's that good. Even I can't miss it. And I always prepare for and expect the worst. I knew she was good, but this is off the charts good. So I will take basically a quarter pound of perfect buds from one plant on my first ever try at significant LST. And I will be using the same method from now on with my photos.

Other than that here's a quick snapshot of Sadie's very odd life and her significant moments. If ever a plant SHOULD have gone hermie it was Sadie. Nope.
- Begin life in a Dixie cup under new high end LED
- Everything goes fine until topping/transplanting. At that point we overnuted her and light burned them a bit at the same time. It slowed their growth a while and they had to recover.
- Sadie, originally the fifth plant in the scrog, got hit the worst. She had a very hard time recovering.
- I decided to take her out and do the scrog with four plants, and was going to trash her, but @Michael Hunt talked me out of it and into trying to bring her back.
- At that point she went to live outdoors in the sun I was going to simply let her finish that way, however big or however long she took. She gradually recovered. I continued to train her.
- Suddenly one day she showed buds out of nowhere and I realized that the change from 18/6 to about 14/10 caused her to start budding, and I had been training her through the stretch without knowing it.
- At that point I had no choice but to clear out the auto tent of the remaining autos and let them finish outdoors, and i moved Sadie into the auto tent. Now she went from sunlight to quantum board/blurples on reds only combination of light and I finished her like that.

This is minimizing the situation. It's amazing I got out of her what I did. Thanks, @Michael Hunt for talking me into keeping her!

And then I guess we're up to the thank you's. So I got TONS of help here. Many were instrumental and especially worthy of note, ie, @Emilya, @Michael Hunt, @Bill284, @Virgin Ground, @Bud Love, @Nine Toed Hippie, and many many others who chimed in. So in all sincerity, THANK YOU GUYS SO GODDAMN MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't have done half as well as I did without your input, and wouldn't have learned so damn much to be totally prepared for my next grow. This was a team haul, and between the autos and Sadie, even losing the entire scrog, I still pulled around 16 ounces from the grow. Could be worse, and it's all good. So thanks again guys. Your help has been much appreciated, more than I could actually say in words. And no, I won't see the dispensary thieves for quite a while. LMAO.

And so concludes our journey. Thanks to those who followed, commented, supported, provided input or advice or criticism, and kept me in line. I greatly appreciate your interest and help. And thanks to the good moderators and folks at 420, as I only had to have a few posts edited in 47 pages. Lol. I appreciate the genteel way with which you guys always slapped me back when necessary. Lmao.

Take care guys. Grow well. I still have my Experimental Sour Apple Autoflower grow journal going, and will be beginning a new journal for the upcoming next grow very soon.
