Jon's Outdoor Winter Photoperiod Grow

Trip Down Memory Lane

Some of you guys may remember my pyramid pot experiment from the big auto grow. I had a three stacked on a seven, like a wedding cake, with no bottom on the three, and the whole thing functioned as one tall, pyramid shaped pot.

Those who recall - it didn’t “work.” Meaning it added nothing to the size of the plant. I concluded that the “long tap root = bigger plant” idea was a no go.

This is the Crescendo stem, which came out relatively intact. Check it out and note what happens to the tap root as it gets smaller towards the end.

This is why the pyramid pot made no difference.

Hi Sensei, aka @Bill284 -

So we were talking about the fold thing and I understand your point and concern/issue with it. However, here’s some pictures that more clearly display the deal and why it’s actually a really good idea if you’re using cloth pots.

First, here’s your hill:

And this shows you both the hill and that there’s easily 7+ gallons of coco in here.

Finally, here’s what keeps all the water in, which I already love. The time savings is a lot.

So maybe it’s not as bad an idea as you think, and maybe it’s worth the trade?

You pour the water in anywhere and it makes a perfect outer ring moat around the center hill. Fast.

I fill that Moat and let it drain.
Each time it sucks fresh air in.
When it comes out the bottom I stop.
Perfect watering method. :thumb:
Flood/ drain/ flood/ drain/flood/drain, harvest. Hehe

Not trying to change your mind. Just saying it’s the EXACT same thing. Just spill proof. Faster.

Did the tap root get smaller right at the bottom of the three gallon pot?

Before that even. They all do. The root game is all about developing feeder roots. Even when I only watered down the middle (long time ago, lol) my tap roots were never much longer than this. Fatter maybe. But this plant also had 60 days to go.

I would argue that this reality also speaks to the importance of using an MSA product to strengthen your stems. When you see how the roots work it makes you wonder how they stand up to the wind outdoors sometimes.

It also implies that maybe lower, wider pots or containers might work well too. Maybe the pot really only needs to be as deep as the tap root? That question is getting tested right now. I have the White Widow in one of my 3/4 - 1 gallon starter pots. It’s staying there for the whole grow in water. The tap root should end up basically filling the entire starter pot. We will see. I debated a lot about using such a small pot, but I think it’s big enough.

Day 48

New res containers arrive Tuesday and we will switch this girl out and give her roots some space to play in.

This thing turned out to be a helluva plant. She took off in the stretch and now she’s….beastly.

Humboldt Dream
Veg Day 16

Yep, only day 16. This is the most vigorous growth I’ve ever seen from a Humboldt Seed Company genetic. I’m sure the genes are a large part of that, but I’m wondering how much responsibility @Remo Nutrients has here. This is pretty Impressive for 16 days.

Forgive her droop, she just got watered. Fabulous internodal spacing on this one.

Btw - a word on properly done Sombrero training. This plant is a good example. Note how the lower ring is 100% unaffected by light blocking from the two towers. If you’ve pulled that ring out enough this is the result. It also makes it so that the defoliation is obvious and simple. You simply clear out the inside and leave all your fans to the outside. Every bud on this plant is getting awesome light. There are a ton of leaves powering her development. She has stem for days under every branch. This is maybe the best I’ve done yet with this Sombrero style.

@Hafta, we were discussing the additional CalMag thing…. I’m finding that at 7ml/gallon things are holding nice and steady. I have excellent sugar leaf production and the fans are immaculate. No need to go higher.

Also wanted to let you know - so my base CalMag is Humboldt’s Secret CalMag plus Iron. It’s 2-0-0. When using a system like Prescription Blend, it works extremely well and rarely needs to be upped. I add 5ml/gallon to begin every gallon since birth. But when growing in any non-soil medium where you have accelerated growth, it has been my observation that many plants need a little more. I can usually achieve this by simply upping the dosage from 5ml on up as I’ve been doing with this one.

But what about if you misread the initial signs and don’t attend to the CalMag issue until you already have red spots and such?

When I get to that point, which thankfully barely ever happens anymore, it calls for what I refer to as an “emergency fix.” For that I keep a container of the Blue Planet Pro CalMag on hand. It’s officially called Blue Planet Nutrients CALMAG Pro Formula. It’s a powder. Note the incredibly high numbers on this stuff in the picture. WAY too hot for every feed use. But in my experience (I’ve had to use this trick three times) it only takes one application of this instead of my usual and it resets the whole thing. More than once and they will potentially start burning.
For what it’s worth!

Very helpful, thanks. My normal Calmag is 4-0-0 with 11% Calcium and 3% magnesium.
I just purchased some 15.5-0-0 with 18% Calcium and 0% magnesium for that emergency shot that I have experienced the need for during the past few grows under high intensity LED's.

It is good to know that once is all that will be needed

Question @Jon . I'll explain first to help me explain. Plant fiber has been removed per FDA since 1960s which plant fiber keeps out toxic and chems the body don't need or want. Can u grind down the stems and roots to get the fiber out of it. Like Keff. Or is keff same as fiber.

Appreciate the question @7Dust2 but I’m afraid that’s way above my pay grade. The only part of the question that I KNOW the answer to is that kief and fiber are definitely two entirely different things. You gotta ask a Sensei for the rest - Bill, Shed, Emilya, Otter, Rexer - the list is too long to mention. You know them all. Sorry, best I can do.

Well you still answered the fiber and keff ? . Hell I figured they were same. . guess I'm wrong. Ok sir thank ya sir. . It just hit my head to ask looking at those jars. Had to ask. Plus they see this and answer I'm sure . I know them well also. We all pretty much check in regularly. With each other. Everyone got their own things going. .

Yup like I said, you know them all. We’re pretty lucky to know the heavy hitters we do. I don’t think if I grind you up a nice bowl of fibrous stem it’s going to get you high. Might kill you, but won’t get you high. Kief most definitely will. Also, as frosty as my girls have been, I only have that much due to sacrificing flarfy buds to the Trim Bin instead of smoking them. I figure if I get the kief from them, I’m still smoking them. Lol. Minimal waste.
