I don’t talk politics here on purpose, but today I’ll break my own rule. Jimmy Carter died. At 100 years old. I won’t speak to his presidency or politics. Everyone has their own opinion. But mine is that this man was more honest and good than any other politician in the entire history of this country. He was a creature of light. Never smoked or drank or did drugs or stole anything or dicked anyone over. One wife his entire life and they had an amazing relationship. When I look at today’s American politics, all I see is a grift in the extreme - a money grab along with and unimaginable cruelty and shortsightedness. No morals or even the attempt to be a good human being. That’s what we get starting January 20. Jimmy Carter broke the mold. He's a hero of mine - the only politician in that bunch. Amazing human being. And if you want to argue, go ahead. Make sure to name someone else who was actively building houses for poor people all over the world well into his 90s.
Cool alien story related to Jimmy. He was the ONLY president to ever file an official UFO report. And his briefing when he took office was given by Bush Sr. There is a famous and disturbing photo of Carter sitting at the desk after Bush briefed him on the situation with aliens. He has his head almost in his hands and he’s crying. Whatever he was told shook the man to his core. And Bush tells the story that he didn’t even tell him much, as that information is “given on a need to know basis” and Carter “didn’t need to know.” But he obviously heard enough. Crazy. The president doesn’t need to know. Christ.
RIP Mr. President. You will be sorely missed. Especially by this dude.
Okay I’m done. Thanks for the indulgence.
EDIT: I have one more story I just got reminded of. So before I moved to Florida, for the first two years of being handicapped, I worked at home as an editor. The company I worked for was founded and run by the highest level of religious scholar there is: he is the guy who started the Religious Studies division and program at Temple University. He was (into his mid 80s) the lead dog of every decision made to form that department. When I edited for him/them, he was around five years retired from Temple, and had begun this book company for post retirement, and I suppose to give himself a venue to see his thoughts in print. Almost 90. I no longer work there or keep up with them, but it’s significant to note that he the sole author at this company. He wrote book after book. I think 90-some. Most were around 100 pages, with a few shorties and a few longer ones. Many were written in some form already when he started, in notebooks and such. Their goal was to sell his work in book form to colleges for their own Religious Studies programs and classes. His focus was on the Jewish interpretation of Jesus Christ, but he taught everything. Hired every professor. Etc.
I tell you who he is in detail because I don’t want to name names here even though it likely wouldn’t matter. And also because it’s necessary to understand the honor that President Jimmy Carter bestowed on him.
you
People think he blew his chance at a second term mostly due to the Iranian hostage crisis, if you remember that. I won’t make an argument. However, the administration actually took amazing steps to try and resolve the problem. As it dragged on, Carter came up with the idea of sending over to Iran a negotiating team of sorts, comprised of all non governmental people. Heavy hitters. The idea was that the people they had to convince were Clerics. Religious folk big time. So Carter sent a group, like almost 15 people, that they researched and found, all of whom had significant knowledge about Iran’s religious landscape. The idea was, this group will be able to speak to them on a level that my government schwubs are not capable of.
My boss, the guy I edited about six books for, was selected as one member of this group. He literally flew there with them and tried to negotiate the hostage release by making a religious argument.
He didn’t give me details on that negotiating, for whatever reasons. So that’s as far as that goes. But just imagine. The President calls you and asks you - a civilian - to serve your country on the highest level. He spells out the idea, and asks him if he’d please do this.
What a fricking honor.
Ok now I really am done. Sorry. Lmao.
