InTheShed Grows Inside & Out: Jump In Any Time

Thanks otter! Always glad to share what I do. :high-five:

As promised, the Tuesday update is all Candida, all the time. Let us begin with the three plants I sprayed with Gibberellic acid (aka G3). They were sprayed once a day for five days (each with a different dilution), and then flipped. Here they are on flip day 11:

From left to right, that's 60ppm, 72ppm, and 90ppm. Not a huge amount of difference between them, but the 90 is still a bit out in front.

Here are some close-ups of the tops. 60ppm:

72ppm:

90ppm:

Not much to see yet, but it's still early days I reckon.

Here are the two Candidas in 1 gallon pots. The one in the GeoPot is the mother I just trimmed back, and the one in the black pot is supposed to be the pollen recipient, assuming I get pollen!

And finally in the Candida tour, the four spares still in solo cups:

I think I will dump the current mother plant and replace it with one of these. Assuming I get pollen sacs on one of the GA3 plants, I will probably start flowering the other three solo cups at staggered times to make sure I have something with pistils when the pollen starts to fall. We'll see...

I hope your week is going well! :surf:

Highya ITS,

Are you continuing to spray G3, or did you stop at flip?

Loved your show and tell about trimming post flip. I haven't been trimming on the stalk, but I do believe I should. I'm hoping to not be so busy next summer as before! Happy Smokin'

Fingers crossed x 3 on the GA3!
Very flexible fingers otter! :welldone:
Makes them stretch madly regardless of dose it appears, and wispy looking
Just like last time!

Thanks Bode! It's five days of spraying only, then flip. Last time (at 180ppm) I waited 48 days before calling it quits with no pollen sacs. So I figure it's early days still.

I might be a bit stoned atm, but that stretch just tickled my ‘I wonder’ grey matter

That stretch we see due to GA3, even at the lower ppms, makes me wonder if maybe Sativas evolved to produce more gibberellins than Indicas, allowing them to grow taller and more ‘wispy’ to deal with humidity.

Interesting thought! Someone with a lab should look into that.

Now get back to those fluid mechanics calcs. :)
It is an interesting thought. (Hi shed, lovely updates :yummy: ). And I’ll add to it that I often hear/see repeated that sativas can be more prone to hermaphroditism. Maybe that’s connected too? Maybe not of course but fun to share the speculative mind-bounces.

Praying for pollen for you Shed. And for mega Rona protection. I’m vibing you even when I’m not logging on!! You and all stateside dwellers in the thick of it. Stay safe and nicely medicated folks.

Monday update y'all...the one where I do the post-stretch thin!

Sunday was warm and sunny and it was flip day 21, so time to take out all the stuff I don't want to trim (#nolarf), as well as forcing the plant to move the growth hormones to the buds at the ends of the branches that I left. Let's take a look at the before and after for the Colombian Gold 2:

Here is the pile of stuff I took off:

When you separate some of it out, you can see that it's not just larfy buds. There a lot of long branches that go as well. Here are some of the ones I could be bothered to pull out for show-and-tell!

Here is the Durban Poison before and after:

And because some folks ask me about this process when I go through it, I thought I would give an example as well as a description:

This was a lower branch that I decided to leave on the plant, but I only wanted the end of the branch to have buds on it, so I pulled off all the stuff further down, leaving only the last few inches of buds to keep bulking. I take off what I call the lowers of the lowers.

I don't recommend this as a thinning method to everyone, but if you don't want to spend a lot of time trimming larf and want to maximize top growth near the lights, it's definitely the way to go.

I have no idea whether I get a bigger harvest by leaving only the tops and stripping the fluff or whether I never make up in top growth what I lose when I trim, but I don't really care! I want the inside of the plant pretty empty (as you can see in the main before/after pics) which helps when I spray for bugs and lowers the chance of PM or rot because of the enhanced airflow.

By the way, after I did the thinning, everything got sprayed with the Safer's Insecticidal Soap spray, and washed off about 4 hours later. No effect on the pistils but positive effect on the aphids!

Finally, here are the final heights for @BeezLuiz's spreadsheet. The Durban Poison is topping out at 41":

And the Colombian Gold 2 is at 37":

They are still getting around 4.5g/gallon straight MC, not showing any signs of deficiencies, and they get 2.5 gallons each every third day (or at least they did before the thinning).

That's it for me today! Feel free to ask any questions that you think of, and tomorrow we'll take another look at the Candida GA3 experiment. I hope your weekend went well, and that the precautions you take will keep the virus from your door.

:peace:
Thanks for taking the detailed pictures.....THAT REALLY HELPS US NEWBIES!!!! And where can I purchase MC?

Thank you Amy! We are definitely in the thick of it.
Nice update. I'm anxious to see that cg finish. I'd love to grow some.
Thanks J3. Not sure if it's going to produce the buds it would during the summer months, but I'm looking forward to it packing on some weight even at 6 hours direct sun a day!

Thanks kitten! MC can be purchased from the greenleaf nutrients website (top result if you google their name). They may still do sample-size bags for only the cost of shipping if you want to test it first. Check 'em out!

but I'm looking forward to it packing on some weight even at 6 hours direct sun a day!
That Cheese I grew last year produced pretty well with just 5 hours of direct sun, so your CG should
do just fine...a little warmer would probably be better, but not much you can do about that...
Interesting experiment with the GA3- Will it just be a few random boy parts, or does the whole plant transition to male?

It's supposed to be every branch that gets sprayed, so for these it would be the whole plant. With any luck that is!

Good news on the Cheese harvest (besides the fact that it was Cheese). They're pretty warm when they're in the sun with the radiant heat, but as soon as it dips behind the roof line the plants go into the shed under the Samsung strips. It's not really warm in there but it stays in the mid 60s until I pull the plants out at 8pm for their 12 hours of dark in the tent in the house.

Maybe a flow chart would help... :hmmmm:

That reminds me, I really need to kick up the wattage on the Samsungs.

Really enjoyed the multi-lane update, Shed! Nice write-up on the defoliation too.
I was running out of popcorn for the GA-Candida experiment but I've stocked up again!:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:
Thanks sy! And now that your work has ended for the year you can just plant your butt here and nosh while we wait for something/anything. :cheesygrinsmiley:
A so-so update. That all you got?
'Fraid so GDB, that's all I got! ;)
I just wanted to stop by and wish you and your family a merry Christmas Shed.
Thank you for all the help this year.
Peace and Prosperity.
:peace:
Thank you Sr! A merry Christmas to you and all.

Waiting for BL's trolly tutorial, but he's too busy with my spreadsheet assignments. :cheesygrinsmiley:
OK, now that your plants have stopped stretching, I had some time to do a write-up of the plant trolley build. ;) You can find it here:
