Indica Inda Closet: Red's First Grow Journal

Update 6-22-2020
I have been busy enjoying the summer, but also my work is picking back up! some of my plants are lollipopping themselves and the lower leaves are dying. I'm ok with this, they're probably sucking the nutes out and using it on taller leaves and branches. R hybrid was a male loss, but I'm starting to think R indica might also be male  I'll wait until I see ball bag clusters even though I'm positive I saw one this morning. grr my first two DWC plants turn out male? it's ok because my feminized autoflower plants from Growers Choice include Northern lights and critical purple. they're both popping pistils on week 3 and 4

1 one the Jackie's and most of the soil plants are dying a slow nutrient toxicity death. I expected this because I pushed week 4 nutes on small 8 week old plants. Only the strong will live and the week 4 nutes will show me females! it worked! this is ok because I'm moving away from soil and going full hydro. also, my soil plants are still in my old bedroom and my new roommate has to deal with 18 hr lights
However, the other Jackie has popped pistils so I'm putting her in a new pot and I'm going to feed her light bloom nutes and set her in the flower closet. Failed LST has also popped pistils and she has been in the flower closet for a few days now. she is also sick so she will need a emergency up-pot as well. my local hydro store has been out of FFOF for months so I have to spend and extra 7$ on amazon to get the soil I need NOW! but I'll do anything for my plants  Almost.
Here's a picture of the female Jackie

Failed LST is in the background there

I hope you guys enjoyed reading

Damn that sucks bro.. But it shows what happens when you force strong nutrients on small plants.. good lesson to learn I guess.. Seems like Hydro is more your thing, you seem to have a knack for it.

I have a question tho... If you are ordering seeds from reputable seed banks and ordering just Fem and Auto Fem's why TF are you running into all these males? My understanding is unless you specifically order Regular seeds there should be no need to pre-sex plants or run into a male unless the feminization process they are using sucks.. IDK, with some of these seed banks they are charging anywhere from $50.00 to $120.00 for 5 premium seeds... they should be guaranteed for the amount they are charging..

I ordered feminized Northern lights and Critical purple from Growers choice but the seeds I got from friends and New 420guy are not feminized

I'm running into a doozy here. Randy and Critical Purple now have entangled roots in their tote. I need to flip randy to bloom, but Critical purple can stay in the tote closet. and flower under 18 hrs of light There's a spare closet in this house I can use for an extra bloom closet. I might put the Randy tote and the soil plants in that extra closet

Now do I try to untangle and tear the two plants' roots away from each other? or do I just do one swift cut with the scissors? both methods are going to stunt growth but I need to flip Randy to bloom to show the sex.
Let me know what you guys think.

OK, that makes sense about seeds from friends..
LOL try to untangle using spray from a hose shooting water down and upwards into their roots pulling with slight pressure? if that doesn't work get ugly and do what you have to do ..
( just give me a heads up so I can turn my head away and grimace )

RIP to the soil plants that were lost in natural-nute-selection
Jackie 2 :rip:
Big Cherry Blossom CBD:rip:
Mutated Cherry Blossom CBD:rip:

The remaining soil plants are:
Old Quadline I'm renaming this plant to Logan after the seed donor.
Jackie 1 is a female with flowers on her! She'll just go by Jackie now
Failed LST also has flowers. I'm renaming it to Jake after the seed donor.

all of the remaining plants have been flipped to bloom
I have some pictures I'm saving for you folks in a future update.
Thanks for reading

It definitely won't be fun for me. but sooner is better than later I suppose. I might have to rethink my strategy here. If I put Randy in his own tote in the soil bloom closet, it will just take up a lot of space on a plant that might be male. Unfortunately, I'm going to wait until randy shows signs of sex in veg.

LOL Bro, soil takes too much patience for some people .. it's about the long game with soil and pots.. I have you figured out as an instant gratification guy.. Once getting the taste of DWC, theres no going back to soil. It's like why bother with soil if you can S.O.G. two grows in the time it takes soil growers to get one grow up and finished?
Hydro is your thing, watching these plants get nuked up on Nutes exploding with mind blowing growth... I think you got a little distracted with these male plants and need to re focus having lost valuable closet grow time f**king around with these other plants.. Clean house of these time bandits, Get your priorities strait and Go Full On Hydro. Maybe take some clones from the Northern Lights specimen replacing those soil plants you're subconsciously trying to get away from?

That's the plan to go full hydro after these soil plants are done. the bags of soil add up really quickly, granted you do use less nutes than hydro. I must have also forgotten how much of a PITA culling males is. might just buy auto fems only from now on. with a few exceptions. :hmmmm: Totes are also a PITA for me. I just got a massive 18-gallon tote just for dechlorinating water. I need to get my roommates to help me lift the full bucket out of the bathtub

Next up:
Jedi Glue
from New420guy
Sour 60 from new420guy (60 day start to finish autoflower)
probably more critical purple autoflower from Growers choice

all of these will have their own 5 gallon bucket

Cull Males from the very beginning before planting..
There's this guy on youtube who's pretty good at sexing seeds, 99.9% accurate if you are detail oriented at spotting differences. .. Says the female seeds have this little elevated ridge on one side shaped like a mini volcano and perfect circle indent from where it popped off the bud. The males are flat on one side with an irregular shaped circular indentation. He says you'll get good at noticing the differences after a little while..

Update 7-2-20
16 days until my 22nd birthday! whew I've been working a lot and a lot has changed with the plants. I moved all the tote plants into their own buckets and they look much better. I had to submerg my arm in the res and painfully rip and tear roots apart  Critical purple and Randy came apart pretty easily, but I had to use a scissors to cut the root bond between Northern Lights and Sour plum.
I moved Randy into the bloom closet with Jake, Logan, and Jackie.
I finally got my Mars hydro Ts600! thanks @SmokeSara

Picture time

sour plum was smothered by Northern lights so it had to bend and twist to get light. should be better now that ti has its own bucket. I put her on 4w veg nutes

The root tearing will definitely stunt their growth but they should fill out the buckets pretty well.

I love this new light it is SO BRIGHT the plants might like it more than me tho

Thanks everybody for reading and thanks for your patience waiting for another update from me :thumb::love:

You guys inspired me to to get a 10 gal bucket up and running to start 2 clones in a perpetual grow.. My soil pots are in week 5 @ 22"setting cola's... Just waiting on a shipment of MegaCrop to arrive from Green Leaf in Cali... been flushing plants in anticipation of switching fertilizer. I want to condition the clones giving them a low dose taste of MegaCrop in soil before transfer to full hydro avoiding shock. / P.S. Shout out to @Virgin Ground for the MegaCrop Info she gave me.

If you guys noticed I love to trouble shoot s**t and do it as cheaply as possible.. To avoid roots from getting tangled up in the future tie off a drawstring fine mesh bag around each submerged plant cage.. They make them for ladies delicates so washing machines don't rip them up.. but I think would solve your problem of roots getting entangled. Roots will still be free swimming but contained. They come in an even finer micro mesh if you want. selling them for 3 bags @ $14.99 at Walmart.

The real issue isn't the stunted plants, it's having dead & soon-to-be rotting root material in the res. It's a good reason to not put two plants in the same bucket or use some netting (as recommended by @Anthony Suszko ) to try to minimize roots getting entangled. Hyrgozyme (or something similar) can help with the decaying roots, if they become a problem.

z7 was causing some nute clumping with my AN nutes so I stopped using it but thanks for reminding me, I'll throw it in all of the buckets. That should help with the rotting. I should try hygrozyme instead and maybe it won't cause nute clumping.

This is genius. 10 gallons is probably better than 14  I definitely wasted a lot of nutes with those totes, but it was a great learning experience. I would still wouldn't keep two plants that close together after veg because they just like to steal light and space from each other especially if you're gonna train them outwards. these quadlined tote children will take a few days to adjust to their new space.

I think I can get it to 8.5 gallon because the white plant basin lowers the cages even more then a flush can lid would.. I have it set up for starting 2 plants to get em to week 3 in hydro so they are strong and large enough to fight off the outside elements once replanted in the ground for an outdoor grow.. I'll be using this set up for single pot hydro for LED boutique species grows once Im done planting up a stand (6-8 plants) of Christmas tree sized sativa in the back yard come May.. Right now I'm all about experimenting with a few clones in the mean time before gearing up for next May..

Mistakes are good if yur learning from them and if they don't cause you too much of a set back.. Since "Im also in my first grow and don't have alot of built up experience yet, I also got overzealous in week 4 with fertilizer burning up the tips of my plants filling a spray bottle up misting them with full strength Miracle grow on top of what i was feeding them every 7 days... I saw them growing like wild fire and thought the additional misting wouldn't hurt... You live and you learn.. My plants recovered quickly after stopping and backing off the feeding taught me another valuable lesson in patience.. I guess I'm just hyper and want to rush things along as much as possible and that's where i need to slow down and take daily cues from the plants doing there thing on there own time.. I was kinda laughing to myself when I saw you bake Jackie lol.. Positive note here is that we all got to see what happens when you expose a small plant to full strength hydro Nutes and its now in our memory banks so non of us will be repeating that mistake.
