I'm trying out CMH

So the other day I ordered at 315 watt CMH with a 3100k Philips bulb from Grow Co. I've never used CMH before, but I have heard a lot of good things about them. My current grow looks like it's going to be a nice grow, but the lower buds just didn't get any light and you can really tell by just how tiny the buds a little lower down the branches are. I'm hoping that adding one of these to the lighting will make a difference. If it works well, I may just get another 315 and remove the LED's all together.

If anyone is running CMH lights, let me know how well they work. Are they worth the investment?

I've been reading through your post this morning. Im starting my first grow in a 4x4 tent with 315 cmh. was hoping you could tell me how soon i can move my seedlings under the cmh light. Do i need to let them get 6-8 inches tall before moving into the tent. Also how far off of your plants are you keeping your Light?

So I just finished week 6 of flower in the tent and all I can say is wow. I'm really please whit how this grow is coming along. Only 3 or 4 weeks left until harvest.

As of today I am also adding a dose of General Organics Bio Weed and Superthrive. My brother in law and I went to the hydro store yesterday and picked up a 6 gallon jug of that and Bio Thrive. This morning he gave me a whole quart of the Bio Thrive. I figured a little bit of seaweed once a week couldn't hurt. I went there to get some more Sea Green, but they didn't have anymore in stock. So instead I picked up some Superthrive. I've never used it in a grow before, but I remember as a kid, my dad used to use it in the yard, especially when transplanting plants and trees. He said it was the best thing ever. So, no more Sea Green for now. Superthrive is taking it's place for now.

And lastly. Does anyone here use Superthrive? if so, how well does it work?

Hello Haystack, I've been keeping up with your journal and thanks for sharing. I have read some other journals and there are for a fact some folks that do use superthrive. I have used it in the past had good results but it has been years. BTW I am fixing to pull the trigger on the CMH315 lights. Going to get two as I have about a 4'x4' area to cover. Do you like the penetration of these lights? cheers Nice buds also.

In my opinion CMH lights are the best I have tried so far. The penetration is a lot better than LED of CFL. The only thing I would recommend is getting CMH lights with a removable ballast and extension cords to go with them. IF the tent gets too hot, you can put the ballasts outside the tent. And if it getts too cold, you can put them back in the tent.

Thanks for your input as I have never grown indoors. I have already considered the removeable ballast like you mentioned in this journal before. I am also going with the 240V version as I can run two lights for the price of one.

Your outdoor grow looks awesome also. cheers.

I gave CMH a try on my last grow and thought it did really well, but there was some hype it didn't live up to. In my opinion, they run just as hot as HPS. I was really hoping to get some cooler operation and chose these over LED, so I have kind of sour grapes about that. However I think the actual light did really good, especially given all the circumstances of my grow. I had a 4x4 tent with one 315 W CMH, some bad soil I mixed up wrong, high temps, a russet mite infection, etc. I still managed to crop out 80% of what I got off the same strain on the previous grow with an HPS light, despite alll those problems. Really I think if things had been dialed in even a little bit, it would have far exceeded the HPS yield, because vegetative growth was ridiculously fast and robust, and light penetration on these is phenomenal. In the middle of the grow I had to cull one, so I replaced it with a seedling, and had the light 5+ feet above the little seedling with no stretching or lodging.

Anyway, I got one of the Prism lighting conversion kits. Comes with a little adapter and a remote ballast, and a Phillips CMH for $200. You plug the adapter into your normal hood or reflector, and then just use it like you would a normal remote-ballast MH/HPS setup. The Phillips lamps are also some of the highest rated so it's a pretty good deal and pretty much the most affordable way to break into CMH I found.

Looking good man! Sad my last grow went off the rails so hard, really didn't get to see the full potential of these lights.

@TheFertilizer
I have to agree with you about the heat. I thought it was going to be a lot cooler than they are. But at least I was able to adapt to the change and I love how they just make things grow!

Too bad about your last grow. But it happens to all of us at some point. My outdoor grow last year was terrible. I had eight plants going and they were growing great. But the heat and mold got to them too much. Instead of the 8-10 lbs I was expecting, I only ended up with a little over four lbs. I even had one plant that just turned brown on me. I mean within a matter of days, the whole thing turned brown on me. So I learned to just cut it down if it happens again. IT was only about 3/4 of the way done with flower, so I let it continue to grow hoping it would get better. But it didn't. Oh well. Live and learn.

Lots of daily growth. Some pics from this evening with some different angles. Looks like I'm getting a little foxtailing so I raised the lights as high as they can go.

Very impressive indeed. I'm liking those cmh's. Might need to invest in some soon.
So far the CHM lights are the best I've used. But I have yet to try cobs or hps. I don't know when but I'll probably get some eventually. But I think after this grow I'll take a brake for a few months. I've been paying pg&e way too much money and my outdoor grow is going to be a shit ton of work this fall.

I’m glad to hear that do put out heat- that’s good news for me.:thumb: From one of your posts about your temps I got the impression they put out almost none and was preparing to scratch them from the wish list.

I have used a little led and years of hps and our next setup in early next years is going to be CMH.
Thanks to you and others on here showing us your grows under these lights has given us the desire to give them a try.

Oh no, they do put out some heat for sure. But if your grow room is consistently cool, or your lights are on during the night, the extra heat is a good thing.

You won regret CHM. They're great.

This has been one of the better threads on CMH. I am liking the results and the price. The heat I worry about but I think that can be addressed. Great job haystack!
There is heat for sure. I ended up switching my light cycle to be during the night. Now it never gets too warm. I'm even thinking about putting the ballast back in the tent for a little more heat in the tent.

great read and info on the cmh.. Debating between a 630lec or 600hps for my 4x4... Have my eyes on leds but my pockets aint deep enough for them right now

have a 4"fan/filter combo from a while ago, still in box, never used... Does anyone think it will be enough to keep the tent cool?
