It has been years since I have used either, but my personal experience was that a simple silver thiosulfate solution gave me better/faster/surer results. Although I do not recall what concentration the colloidal silver solutions were that I tried. Back then, we had both a photography equipment and supply store and a general chemical supply business in town, so both the silver nitrate and sodium(?) thiosulfate were locally available at a reasonable price. I just mixed up what I expected to need, and always ended up pouring some out afterwards, lol.
