Hyena's Never-Ending Adventures In Growing

When your beans pop, how far up are your leds?

2-3 feet...I have plenty of intensity at that distance. I gauge it by how wide the sprouts are...I look for 2- or 3-1 ratio of width to height. If I'm not getting that I lower the lights. I want cabbage, not corn.

I also believe the 24/7 all-you-can-eat factor in hydro produces better growth than any soil setup. I'm NOT saying they can grow technically faster in hydro, but hydro allows the plant to grow so much more root mass so faster growth than the same size soil container would produce is possible.

Peace, Hyena

I super excited about the run I just started. As you know I completely redid my hydro system to be as similar to your method as possible (aside from the buckets, next round for sure, it'll save 6-8" of head space.) Thank you for all the direction, your grows show why I would want to have results similar to yours, with the ability to take off for a week at a time:). Keep up the great work Hyena!

Happy Sunday!

PROJECT 27 UPDATE!

First, let me just say THANK YOU to you, and to everyone who follows this thread. I appreciate you being there.

Now, the girls...everybody looks great and growing about an inch a day...

Three days ago I topped everybody except a couple in the back that I want to be taller, and plan to harvest later. Double planting seems to be the way to go, we are getting filled in so fast!

But one thing leads to another. The problem is, these bushes are already so thick and the fan leaves are so unbelievably HUGE the developing branches can't poke through. Literally. So I had to do my first branch maintenance today.

Since I get my girls really squat and wide early, this problem happens but I don't know if I have talked about what I do.

I supercrop the main fan leaves.

By gently squishing the stems I can bend the main 4 fan leaves down and tuck them under the growing branches without killing them completely, the same as branches. IMHO they still continue to function fine, maybe at a reduced level but the supercrop doesn't seem to kill them so I believe they continue to produce essential food for the plant but no longer block the light to the developing branches. Maybe there isn't the same shock to the plant that has to occur when a big fan leaf is removed. I don't like to just chop them because at this young stage one large fan leaf represents 10-15% of the total food-producing area of the plant and I always feel like I shock them when I pull the four main fans when they're this young..

Here's the before and after, on the White Widow...

The leaf supercrop seems to recover the same as a branch, just that the leaf hangs down, but they are still catching plenty of light and light=food.

The Hyena Berrys have some of the fattest leaves I have ever seen. Of course, I'm mostly into sativa-ish weed as a grower so this more-Indica blend will be fun.

20180211_093053.jpg

The only thing lacking is the autoflower experiment...at this point it seems only 2 of the six autoflower seeds will come up. 2 got halfway and petered out, 2 didn't sprout at all, and one is a tiny twisted freak with one cotyledon and a mini-leaf. Don't know if she will make it, my experience is that a sickly or misshapen seedling becomes a sickly and underperforming plant. I've never yet had one that started small and got caught up.

20180211_0932141.jpg

Okay I've always thought free seeds probably equal old seeds. Probably. I mean, why would you give away fresher seeds, when every bank probably ends up with plenty they don't sell for a couple years. I'm not sure if autos are more or less cooperative seeds in general, not enough experience with the little runts.

So, it looks like we will have 1 or at the most 1-1/2 autoflowers to add to the mix. Probably just as well, this front area will fill up completely with colas fast and if the autos didn't get tall in a hurry they wouldn't have enough light anyway...one will be fun and yet not interfere. Nature provides.

So have a nice day and smoke 'em if ya got 'em...

Happy Valentine's Day!

Here's the ultra-sexy

 PROJECT 27 UPDATE!

Girls turning in to women in here, I tell ya...

20180214_071627.jpg

LIGHT INTENSITY MATTERS, the new protest movement in favor of giving our girls all the light they can handle and then some. WE HAVE DENIED these plants their right to additional lumens for TOO LONG!

I for one have had enough of this travesty and that's why I give my girls PLENTY and the results are beginning to show. That's why they are so phat!

You can see in the photo above the left side looks like it is dominating the right side, growth wise. This is partially an illusion because the left side is about six inches higher than the right side...the system is gravity-based and has to provide some slope back to the reservoir. But it also is six inches closer to the lights and that's a contributing factor to the extra-lushness...even that small difference in distance generates a measurable difference in intensity.

BUT basically the growth of everything in here is blowing my mind!

Okay, here's one of the Hyena Berrys...it isn't yet a foot tall but look at the size and strength of the leaves...

20180214_071835.jpg

I just laid a brand-new full-size Bic on there and the leaf didn't even notice. I mean it didn't budge. The plant is a cross of PlushBerry and CheeseBerry so we are looking for some fruity cheese from these ones. I'm amazed at the stoutness and sturdiness of the plant so far, all 5 are pretty much the same.

Here's how everybody is looking...

The right side has the Big Nugs Fast in front, Hyena Berry middle, and the Blue Hyena that we started a week late in back, catching up nicely:

20180214_071803.jpg

The middle has the forest of Hyena Berry center and the 2 Sour Jack in back:

20180214_071757.jpg

Watch out, I have a feeling those 4 plants will produce a ton by the end of this run.

The left side has Big Nugs Fast in the front 2 buckets, and the White Widow in back:

20180214_071640.jpg

Everybody on this side needs attention, they are already running all over after being topped. So I scrogged the mass for awhile and got everybody sorted out and pointing in the various directions I want them to go.

Here's the look after scrogging:

Vegging like kwaazy. Just the way I love it.

In support of the Hyena theory of nutrient supplementation, otherwise known as less is more, I point out the lush and rapid vegetative growth of all these plants, many even doubled up in a small container. The only nutes I have given this grow so far is the first splash of GROW and MICRO, plus a single shot of cal-mag, three weeks ago. This represents less than 10% of what the manufacturer recommends and I haven't added anything since.

At one point I looked at feeding a plant like feeding an animal...I assumed what I threw in there is rapidly consumed in full.

Nowadays I understand plants need the continuous presence of many nutrients, but the physical amount they consume is very tiny so there really isn't the need to constantly add more, certainly not the amount on the bottle.

Look at the above plants and tell me they are missing something...not a single discolored leaf tip. Among five different varieties I might add. So it's a fair test. I really do believe I could probably run this whole grow with only 2-3 shots of nutrients the entire way. I won't, as I think the flowering phase has specific needs and can be optimized somewhat by nutes but the vegetative phase is all mother nature. I just want to give my girls the basics they need and get out of the way!

I suggest for many problems, the root cause is too much supplementation. Just a thought.

Again, it is Valentine's Day and I already took full care of my sweetheart this morning...cards, flowers, and mad sex. That's why I was five minutes late this morning.

I need a joint...

Peace, Hyena

I think the biggest problem a lot of growers encounter is Nitrogen. I see so many plants about to be chopped that are very dark green. I have a bit of a theory I adopted from sweet sue that a plant with a small amount of deficiency will push out more frost in attempt to protect itself from external factors. Idk just haven't ever seen a plant look better (with too many nutes) when compared to a plant fed with only what the plant is asking for. Just my 2 pennies. And it seems we all agree ..

Plants look stellar hyena! I may steal some ideas from you as I plant to try a top fed DTW drip system. I want to go full hydro but until I purchase a generator, it cannot be done with the frequency of power outages here in AK.

Glad to hear you and your Valentine had a great start to the day! All 5 mins of it ...... 5 minutes more than my wife expects ....

Ps that cheesey fruity cross sounds BOMB!

High HM,

This grow is phenominal! Very nice point about less is more! I believe that way as well. But all the girls look superb. You have found a way to increase plant production even more. Must be the lights. Did you add more this grow? (I read a lot of journals, so get mixed up trying to remember who has done what.) Very impressive results. Namaste

Hey Bode thanks for the props brother.

I'll tell you, the all-LED is great...the intensity of the GROWSTAR GS1000s is actually giving a touch of leaf burn and they are three feet away!

Plus remember, I now double-plant at least 5 buckets and as you can see, they fill up fast doing that. 2 really is better than one!

Plus some luck. Not too proud to admit it!

Peace, Hyena

Hello to anyone still reading this...

Seems like a lot of glitches in the site redesign...

I'm going to wait a couple days and see if they get things straightened out before I make the decision whether to keep this journal going.

Peace, Hyena

NO idea how to upload photos. Wasted 40 minutes trying to find how.

I did the same last night. It appears as though you click the menu on the top left. Then go to media. You upload the images to your media. And then you just go to your thread and click the camera icon when replying and a list of all the pictures you uploaded to your media will pop up allowing you to select up to 20.

I miss my app. :-/ I don’t want to be a Debbie downer but it was designed well and right up until the photo issue I had not a complaint in the world about it
