Update: The Autos (day 9-11)
Growing different kinds of plants in different ways imposes some Tetris-like activities while working out how to arrange things. I’m still experimenting with how and what I’m growing and realising that where and how I place things in the tent is something that can take a while to work out.
I now have both the
Dark Devil Auto pots raised on some upturned pots that got them a bit closer to the lights again which I think is helping them sort out their photosynthesis issues (well, on the 3 that had some). They’re now getting 14000-15000 lux and seem good with that.
The
d#4s had both faded or bleached (whatever the phenomena
is - it’s so obviously to do with light because you can see that the cotyledons are still fully green). Last night when the tent woke up they were visibly improved.
Days 9-10:
I love the way this angle shows how intense the light is.
That was shortly after lights-on and about 14hrs later, towards the end of their day, I had good confirmation that they’re really happy and praying to the light.
Days 10-11
Only one
d#3 faded/bleached and the other stayed perfectly green. I have decided that this phenomena is to do with light intensity changing dramatically in those first few days above ground. That’s my current theory in any case. Both times I’ve had this happen it’s been after something changed
significantly with the light.
Anyhoo, d#3s also had a great day. Here’s them at lights-on last night (all the DDAs got a tiny dribble of 1/4 transwater last night - just keeping things even).
And then this morning after a tent day of noticeable growth
The Coco Kids
It’s challenging getting the watering right when growing an auto in coco, cause you start in the finish container and that makes it difficult to keep the medium wet without overwhelming a small seedling. I have oversoaked the medium a bit once or twice but am getting it to the sweet spot now.
Much less water than I think - that’s the ticket!
. I’m using 1/4strength solutions for fertigation and will likely keep it there until I get signs the plants need more. I’m using BioVega by Canna nutrients. I’m actually mixing at only
half the standard recommendation for seedling/early veg because the recommended amount is for use in Canna’s own soil/coco mix which is amended (CannaTerra - I’m not using that). They say to double the doses if you’re using the BioVega/Flores in an unamended medium like coco or DWC hydro etc. So in coco, 1/2 strength is 1/4 strength if that makes sense.
I’m reading over lots of journals and guides about working with Coco Coir and am feeling like I’ll work something out that is good for the plants and works for me. I’m alternating currently between gently soaking the whole pot to run off and just giving a little in a ring around the plant. The pics below show them a little too wet at first (drooping a little) and then much happier after a day.
Auto Amnesia Haze at lights-on last night, a bit too wet, it was droopier than it looks in the pic
:
And happier this morning near the end of lights-on:
Once I have what I’m aiming for with watering tech dialled in a bit, I’ll post some of the helpful details I’ve collected while reading. There there are definitely some rules to doing the passive hydro thing but there is also quite a lot of scope for different approaches, all of which seem to work for different folks in different circumstances so it’s just a matter of working out what’s going to be good here.
Auto Blueberry bounced back from the fade/bleach phenomena really fast. It was also a little ‘too-wet’ droopy last night at lights-on ...
...and also much perkier this morning after a long day under QBs
These 2 are also getting about 14000-15000lux
Speaking of plant-Tetris and how one arranges and positions plants in a space, this whole setup may need a big re-arrange very soon. Ironic, since I just got it to this arrangement a few days ago and I’m quite happy with it - everyone seems good under the light and everyone gets hit by the fan.
However, I really need to get the soil cooking tote out of the way (in my room) and
@weenmeoff suggested putting it
in the tent and putting the plants on top. I’ve previously considered this for in the future but didn’t think I’d be able to do it for this time. Because ween mentioned it again, I reconsidered and will try to get a friend or a helper around to help me do it. Thanks ween! I just need to configure how I’m going to set it all up before I do that, so that everything is ready to go and the plants have the least disturbance possible. A few days of measuring heights and scouring the shed for the useful bits and pieces that will make it possible will be needed.
I had considered the alternative of just filling the 2 big pots ready and keeping them in the tent until transplant (at least 4+ weeks away). This wouldn’t be ideal but the DBHBB brains trust said it was possible (so long as it doesnt dry out etc.). Then I realised that I’m planning to also get 2 smaller 3gal pots of HBB soil put of that half batch, so that plan just ain’t gonna work.
Best plan will be ween’s suggestion of putting the tote in the tent. I’ll use some marine-grade formply board on top to make a table. That will actually help to keep all the rootzones a bit warmer too. The mass of cooking soil will be a nice thermal store
Funny, having
decided to do it - I just want to do it
now! But physically I can’t, so I have to be patient.
I’ll dedicate my enthusiasm to finding great things in my shed with which to execute the plan! Then when help comes I’ll be ready to go.
That’s a really long post about a few seedlings
. I’m still quite a novice when it comes to germinating and starting plants indoors so there’s a lot to think about!
Thanks all for the beautiful and supportive company along the way. There’s no substitute for the growing companionship we get to share here
I trust that if anyone sees or reads something that doesn’t seem right, or seems ill-advised that they will speak up!
