Hortishorti's First Grow - Organic Bagseed 2017

Oops, sorry. I hit the wrong button. Anyway, I'm pretty well caught up and subbed in.
Thanks for tuning in Grandpa! I'm sorry I haven't commented on your journal in a while, I decided to let the real pro's chime in . I'm really excited to see how your new soil treats you. Much love, Grandpa! Again, thanks for tuning in.

No worries about my journal, shorty. It appears you have enough to deal with with your own. Those fungus gnats are a pain in the butt! I had to deal with them in my first grow, and we thought we had got rid of them, then they started showing back up again. At the time we had no oil, so we had to use the old school method of placing sand on top of the soil. After reading up on it, I know it will be successful for you. I'll be checking in here daily, however, like you, I may not post every day. Happy growing, and may God bless!

I'd say I'm glad I'm not the only one to have dealt with fungus gnats, but they really seem to be an eternal issue, I hope you don't have issues with them in your new soil! :( Early on, I had an issue with overwatering/feeding and they were pretty much everywhere. I thought I'd remedied the issue by letting my soil dry a bit more between watering because they had disappeared. Now it seems anytime the soil is moist longer than 2 days~ they come back. I'm lucky my big girl can pretty much suck the pot dry within 2 days, but my clones/seedlings have been getting regular neem oil treatment, and even still, I do see them periodically, I'm actually beginning to think the Fox Farm Soil is loaded with thripps and fungus gnat larvae. :lot-o-toke:

Happy growing and god bless you too, Grandpa!

Which fox farms soil are you using? I've used the Happy Frog for my last grow and this grow and haven't had a problem once. I've also been very careful not to overwater tho. I've read in numerous places it's better to underwater than overwater so that was always my rule of thumb with watering. I have no problem letting my girls sit unwatered until they show signs of needing it.

Our issues with them came in our first grow when we had a surprise with an extra plant that popped through. We had to put it into something, so we used some soil we had kept outside for emergencies. Apparently this started the problem. I would be very, very cautious about taking anything outside and then bringing it back and doors. The chances are very high you will bring some kind of creepy crawlies in side. So, all of the soil that we had to use since then as been opened in side the house andcheck as thoroughly as we can, and then used. Fox Farms and a lot of other soils always have the possibility of having some of these in the bags, but generally due to their drying and curing methods, they don't survive. However, sometimes they do and you have a problem. That's why you always check out new bags of soil to be sure.

I'm using Fox Farms Ocean Forest. When I first got the bag I should have checked it better than I did, it was fully sealed, yeah, but the soil was moist. It had about the same wetness as a wrung-out towel. Within a few hours of planting my beans and wetting the soil, fungus gnats were proliferating my area. I gave it no mind because I saw no damage to the plants. Then something clicked & and I looked it up, that's when I started letting the soil dry. They pretty much went right away after that. But they always made a reappearance whenever I'd get more soil out of the bag(like when I transplanted my baby into the 3.5gal). Or when I potted my clones.

I've long since ditched the idea of over-watering but I'm also happy to say I washed my clones of the fox farms and threw them in a coco/perlite mix & have yet to have any issues with fungus gnats.

I will definitely be very cautious should I take action to move my op indoors once circumstances prevail.

Good move going to the Coco and perlite mix. With mine, they would go away, and then when I watered they would reappear. Basically, watering them activated the pupal and eegg stages to hatch. Knowing that I didn't want to use a systemic, all that I was left with was the sand. The oil could not be placed into our budget at that time. Glad you got it all worked out. :thumb:

I'll tell you what... If this grow works out with the new soil, I will be singing the Praises of the Build A Soil product. Not to mention their excellent staff who are more than willing to step up and answer questions directly and matter-of-factly. Great experience for me with them! Wish they were sponsors...

Goodmorning 420magazine :) I was able to get the power turned on for our old office, being that it's pretty much been out out-building for a few years, I was really surprised the AC still worked. I've now got my babies set up in the closet out there, in part because well, it's pouring outside right now :( Temps are staying at 72, humidity is good, and I've got plenty of air blowing around her.

I've got a few updates with my big girl

As you can see, her hairs are beginning to turn as today marks what I'm counting as halfway through week 5. I'm beginning to feel like she is not going to take as long to finish as previously thought. All sorts of lovely cannabis scents are coming off of her, my favorite being an exaggerated watery-hinted undertone akin to putting skunk juice in the percolator on your stove(sounds gross, I know, but it's the best way I can describe it). Very very pungent and dark scented in the ambient, however, a touch of the buds leaves your fingers with a smell almost identical to cream-cheese and berry jam.

However, the oldest fan-leaves are beginning to yellow, with about 5 total showing noticeably lighter shades of green starting from the vein, out towards the edges. I would be concerned, but a quick check on youtube let me know for some reason that some people consider 39 days of Flowering as week 6, even though I count it as week 5. So I'm checking off the mild yellowing as being entirely normal as my baby begins to focus entirely on buds & resin. I'm also considering cutting nutrients entirely at the beginning of week 6, maintaining the same water schedule with pure RO water until chop time. I've been kinda treating this soil grow like it was hydro.. though my girl has been a champ, never drooping once on me despite being fed every other watering with 2 gallons of full strength nutes, I can't help but think I would have saved money & promoted a better root system had I maintained a healthier biology in the soil.

Sorry for rambling on, 420mag, I'm just heavily medicated. Hope everyone has an amazing day:thumb:

Beautiful job! She looks fantastic.

Thank you, Newty! It honestly feels surreal when I open up the room and see what she looks like :) I feel like I've been running in circles chasing my tail regarding nutes, PH this, PH that. Soil provides some cushioning for mistakes for sure, so I'm really happy I've made it to this point without screwing her up too bad. From here on out, I hope it's smooth sailing. Good ol' clean h20.

While I'm happy my clones are doing well in the Coco/perlite, my honest intentions are to start running hydro buckets in the near future. I'm constantly monitoring PH, PPM, EC etc anyways. My view on it is that you can't change out soil, you just brace for impact. You can, however, introduce new res. solution :) Seems like less of a headache anyways.

here is my clone in Coco/perlite currently. I gave up on LST methods and have resumed supercropping and defoliation which I must admit has been much more efficient this go around :) understanding the way the plant takes shape as it matures, stretches and flowers has given me insights on how to best train this baby. I will be taking clones from this one here next week after she fills her container a little better. I want her to have a great root ball upon transfer into 5gal smart pot.

The clone I made of the triploid top however, has been unassuming and is throwing mutations at me like crazy.. beginning to think she may have been a very unstable genetic line. I see very little potential so far in her. Which is really weird because from seed, she was vibrant, healthy and vigorous. The buddy I gifted her mother to, is also having issues with her as she flowers. (Hairs reddened at 3 weeks flowering, leading me to believe she has a high potential for hermaphrodite characteristics).

I may be culling her from my lineup, but will flower the clone to see how she produces anyways since she already exists.

Oh well, I still have my other unknown bagseed which has proven to be a winner so far .

Happy sunday, 420magazine!
Not much to update with my girl in flower, but I'd really like to give some attention to the clone.
I am having to supercrop and trim this girl TWICE a week or more! She's going to be a monster!!
This is my first time having ever grown from clone, and by the time I flip her, she will have vegged for almost 6 weeks!

I'm super excited to see what I can do with her. I will be putting her in either a 5 or 7 gallon smart-pot for flowering :)
For now, it's just veg-veg-veg. Hope everyone's having a great day!

That clone looks really good! It's got some serious structure developing underneath the canopy! I'd consider trying LST one more time just to keep from having to supercrop so often..just tie it once and leave it lol but to each their own! You may prefer to do more to your girls than I do lol but with that being said I've also been supercropping my girls due to their size and the inability to LST every branch I want to

I may try LST one day, but I figure because I have several weeks left for veg, supercropping isn't gonna hurt it. I'm gonna let it stack vertically for a week after lollipopping before I flip. It also makes it easier come transplant time, in my opinion. I do plan on taking a few cuttings from this clone within the next week or so. My goal right now is to strategically defoliate/trim to get a better idea of which growth is going to cause over-crowding. That way I can just prevent overcrowding by making new plants :circle-of-love:

Yeah transplanting with LST can be a hassle..my last transplant took an extra 30 ish min due to having to undo all the ties I had on the branches. But I can't say that it didn't give me two pretty evenly spread out canopies
