Growing Without Bloom Nutes By Farside05

There are a load of benefits to added silica (which I'm sure is why farside is adding more than MC provides), detailed here:

Stronger cell walls
Stronger cells mean bigger stems
Increased resistance to environmental stress
Increased resistance to pathogens
Increased resistance to pests
Enhanced metabolic functions

I am currently starting a grow that is using supersoil and MegaCrop. Here is the reason that is not insane. Supersoil, or a LOS for that matter, work because of the microbes that are already living in the soil or that you bring in regularly via teas. If you are not actively cultivating and keeping alive the microbes, then you are not running an organic grow and without additional nutrients that are readily available, plants even in a formerly living soil will not survive. I am using tap water with its microbe killing chlorine in this grow and I am not adding any additional microbes either. By the time this grow is finished this will be a minerally rich, but completely dead soil, it's only ability being to hold water/nutrients in suspension. Supersoil or not, without the living part, the microbes, it is simply a medium that can not supply the needs to the plant by itself, so I will be using MC to actually feed the plant.

The podcast in post 3 of this thread also has more silica info.

:hmmmm: I'm confused by your reply. If you are killing the microbes then why bother going through the expense of using LOS?

I understand that. Plus you had mentioned that it was older soil and you'd have to do a soil test on to see what it needed amended with, so you chose just to go the fertilizer route. But to buy a brand new kit and then feed Mega on top of it? That's what's confusing to me.

ok, now I see your confusion, and yes, that makes no sense to me either. Go with one or the other... don't expect benefits from both.

because without further amendments I can not trust this soil to get me all the way through next grow... and what expense? I have been using this same soil over and over again for years... I have long ago stopped worrying about the cost of this soil.... but as said above, my situation is not the same as someone thinking they are going to be able to play both sides of the fence and get Doc's results PLUS the MegaCrop results all in one complicated little package. And since this grow won't be stressing my soil or using any of its mineral content, I can always go back after this grow and reamend and activate and have a TLO grow again.

Yes, even with the silica. For 3 grows since the change with various different strains.

Wild. I'll have to keep an eye on mine too. Obviously there are other benefits to the silica, and that's a good article and podcast info too. I've seen that before when looking into using it.

The Professor does alright with just sandy soil and MegaCrop!
This is the beauty of MC I think. I dont regret the Los and am still looking forward to the results it will give too but negates the purpose of it to a point .The make up of it is very useful with peat , volcanic ect... so might stop me killing them with overwatering. I know prof loves the sandy soil now too.

Forgive me, but I don't get the concept of running LOS in tandem with Mega Crop. In my mind it's like saying that both methods are lacking something that you're hoping the other provides. Either Mega is a complete nutrient and provides everything your plant needs to grow and needs nothing from the LOS, or the LOS is complete and needs nothing from the Mega. Seems redundant and a hell of an extra expense. Running one vs the other, like your original journal title, with no extra supplementation seems to be a better scientific experiment to me. Soil for life is a misnomer in my book if you have to keep amending it. You're just trading one kind of "fertilizer" for another.
I agree 100% and initially my thoughts were to run them opposing. As thebLos is the 1st run with it , I hoped to give it time to kick off developing the bio life while the MC got the ladies fed. I have not lost interest in the Los just deciding how best to move it along logically. I am hoping 2nd use no-till will see them more able. Emmys soil is out of sorts with levels so I see why it makes sense in her situation and watch it with interest. The amendments are not essentials if the soil is kept alive with falling leaves ect back into the pots so will be self sufficient hopefully and go to a single bed with multiple plants in it and just waterings. I do like the option of increasing and controlling my grows more so the Mc still gives me that with other mediums too. really wanted to see how much it can spread among my mediums too.

So is your plan to have this be your last grow in this batch of soil? At this point (how long?) Do you consider the soil now to be used up and mostly inert, so it's required to use a fert like MC to bring you through? have you measured or checked for existing beneficial supplemental organic life in your soil?

Day 37, Day 2 of the flip.

The tent is starting to fill in nicely. No maintenance required today. Just watching them grow. Front left girl is continuing to close the gap with back left.

Nice post flip verdant cabbage core boost!
I think, I thought I saw hairs too. But that was just a dream, just a dream, just a dream...dream.

I just gave them a quick look and snapped pics but I hadn't noticed any sexing yet.

Brings a tear to my eye.
