Growing Cannabis 101: Dean West Quest To A Successful Sativa Harvest

Thank you very much , so can I ask what is the system or process your using to let them compost ? Is just putting the soil and root masses into a tote mixing up and putting a compost tea in or do I need to add worms and everything to the mix , I know I’ve asked a lot out of you . Do you have of this documented anywhere in this site , thank you very much for your help and support to my quest to a trouble free organic grow

No, I have never pulled all my writings together into a tutorial on how to manage a living soil, because frankly, I just set out on this experiment myself about 3 years ago, and for the longest time I didn't feel I knew near enough to try to pass on what I was learning. As I have learned however, the best way to master a subject after you have learned it is to then try to teach it... and I guess that is what I am doing now. Thank you for that push, and someday I bet I do write a thing about the various types of soil grows.
There is nothing fancy at all about my compost, since my goal when starting it was total stealth. I have two 30 gallon trash bins in the attached garage, so it never really freezes in there and in the summertime gets quite hot. Each of those bins is typically half full of composting soil that is constantly amended with trimmings, old rootballs, new minerals, and left over teas. They are mixed up (hence being half full) about once a month... more often if I want to make my big brother have to work for a joint or two. I did have a worm farm, mainly for fishing worms, a couple of years ago and a lot of that was added into this compost too... and even to this day I still find living worms in random containers.

Hey everyone , so as you know I was having microlife issues in my soil , I have now start using raw npk microbes , they have a dream team of veg microbes and also a dream team for bloom . I gave them their first dose of Friday dec 13 th and watered in , then next day I did the same thing . Today I have noticed my plants looking marvellous, the new growth is flawless, I really hope from now on using this new product will completely change the outcome of my grows , I can now let my plants pots dry out before watering again because I can just reload the dream team into the medium . I will post before and after pics when I get a chance.

@Emilya now can I experiment with using a small amount of this and trying to brew a tea to u me of the population to try and make this product last as long as possible?? Would you ever consider using your realgrowers recharge as the main ingredient in your tea with molasses and watch the magic happen ?? What is your opinion on this em

No, because all you are doing is setting up a battle royal to happen in your brewing bucket. Not all of these microbes are exactly friendly to each other. When you mix them up and immediately apply them, they scurry off to find their own little corners of nutrients they are familiar with, but when you put them all in a brew bucket together, a good number of them will eat some of the others. By the time you brew for an additional 24 hours, entire species can be wiped out. It's not magic when that happens... it is genocide. :)

@Emilya Awe man this is what I’m talking about :adore:

that was a very interesting way to put it but it’s the absolute truth , but it completely makes sense , they must have individually cultured each and every life form in the “dream team” and like somehow made them all dormant threw em together waiting for some moisture to spring back to life , the stuff is like this powderish substance . I am terrified to breath it in so I have a fitted respirator to protect me against carcinogens at work that I use for application. How is the realgrowers stuff , will there be biological warfare inside your lungs if inhaled by accident ?
Thank you for the advice I honestly was going to try it , I have a few test plant from bag seeds ( same strain) have been pretty much doing mad scientist experiments in these plants I will not take them to flower. Just trying new things on each.
Take care em

yes, I am afraid to breath the stuff in too. That is exactly what they do too... they have separate vats to culture out each individual species and then they freeze dry them into an inert form ready to be reactivated with moisture and so they can safely be mixed together. It is quite remarkable how much life is in a spoonful of that stuff

11/18/19

hey everyone, I hope y’all have had a wonderful December so far. I hope everyone is all set for Christmas, I hope all of you will be surrounded by the people you love in your life

I just want to take a sec here to talk about something that I feel is very important, especially since I do struggle with depression myself but I do have an amazing support system my wife and my kids and my wife’s family, these people saved my life so I just want everyone to be aware this time of year it is a magical time of year but also it’s the time of year when depression rates and suicide rates go through the roof, if you notice anyone one that you know a little off lately please don’t let it go without saying anything or reaching out. Please your not alone, and if anyone on here doesn’t have anyone to spend Christmas with please reach out to someone , this is no time to be and feel alone. We all have people that love us, just remember your not alone. And if you don’t have anyone reach out to me or anyone on this group. Please your not alone

It’s been a few weeks since my last update and I apologize for this, life gets busy.

JOURNAL UPDATE DAY # 46

So a lot has happened in the past few weeks, my plants were showing major deficiencies and it was throwing my right off , this is my first attempt at true living organics , worms and all kinds of crawling things in my soil in turn creating a complete soil food web well I obviously messed up somewhere , I think one mistake was a 3” layer of hay in the middle of the pot , I know now that if I am to do this I will set my pots 2 months in advance and let the worms work their magic and hit it with npk microbes in the regular to break everything down before planting into the amended medium . So now I am hitting these girls constantly with microbes and after a week and a bit they are bouncing back , my autos damage is done and it has significantly stunted the growth of the one currently in flower. But the smell coming off these buds is outstanding , hints of citrus fruits , somewhat pine ish and has a woody ish and a very sweet indica smell to it, even though it’s a sativa dominant strain , so at the very least I will get a very nice smoke out of it , even if it’s a small amount , I am going to keep running these until I can get these to their full potential. I started a second Moby dick XXl in a 5 gal pot old school plastic pot, just to see how it goes here I did not add hay into the middle of my next auto , I have loaded it with microbes , only amended at half strength cause I know there are amendments left over . So I’m hitting them with microbes on the regular ,

every since using the npk microbes myplants have shown a complete turn around,

SOIL- so this is my biggest issue , I was amending my soil and planting within a week . Not giving time for the microbes and everything else to break anything down to become available, so these pots did sit for about a week , so gave them a drenching if compost tea .

This is so wrong and it took @Emilya to keep pushing me in the right way , so now I am finally doing something right. Last night I mixed 15 gal of soil all my recycled super-soil I don’t have a lot of it maybe 30 gallons of soil in total then I amended with gaja green at 1/3 Rd strength , I mixed up some npk grow microbes and watered the in the medium , I will let this soil cook for the next 2 months. I have 15 gal of soil left in which I am going to get set up for flower, and load it with microbes. I think doing this prep work and giving the soil the time, I will have a flawless grow as far as soil goes .

ENVIRONMENT- everything is on point lights on 26 degrees and 60% Rh and lights off 20 degrees 60% Rh

Let’s get into some photos here

Amherst sour diesel by hao

pheno #1

she is starting to take shape now , I’ve remove bottom 2 nodes for clones , I’m going to keepone going in a space bucket with minimal light just to keep it alive, and when harvest comes if it’s a keeper I’ll keep it as a mother , if not I’ll clone the heck out ofit and I’ll do a sea

she has been topped multiple times now i am going to just let her fill out see how she goes , if some branches get too long I’ll top

the new growth is looking very nice

just a shot I got an idea from a member last year , I’m pretty sure it was @carcass who originally did this type of photo

Amherst sour diesel
Pheno #2
She has been topped a few times and will be set to let fill out for the next few weeks now she has a nice structure and I can’t wait to see what these 2 plants bring
So out of the 2 asd phenos this one has the large sativa like leaves so I am very excited for both
As you can see the new growth is beautiful

MOBY DICK XXL AUTO

pheno #1
And this now brings us to the 2 autos first one is on day 47 out 80 ish days
She’s been through hell and back but I finally got things under control and it seems the damage has stopped but she’s not going to bring much of anything to the smoking room but I got a lot of experience in what not to do when growing autos , 1 don’t start in solo cup , 2 make sure everything is on point because you only have 3-4 weeks to build as much as you can for flower. So In the future I will start in 3-5 gal pots and water very little more frequent

One things i am unsure of is why are the pistols turning already , I have no males in my house or outside . I have been Diligent on my light distances . Any help would be great.

Moby dick XXl auto pheno #2

I really hope this one gets some more height then the 1st pheno

If anyone has any advise please feel free , I welcome the knowledge , my mind is open

Merry Christmas dean hope.your holidays are good brotha . Hope to meet up this week maybe .

Until then keep it green buddy.

JANUARY/1/2020

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE

Journal update- hey everyone I have kind of a bit of a weird update there’s gonna be a few in one here , I figured how to get 3 updates into one. I am way to busy with life guys I really wish I could dedicate more time to this maybe when my kids are older who knows.
So a few things have happened since the last update .
First of all Moby dick auto #1 was pulled wasn’t worth the time or the plant count.

min this update I went through and completely stripped all the leafs off these 2 plants , I started some lsting , I tied them all back and topped all the tops that were outgrowing others to let the rest catch up before I topped them aswell, I finally got these 2 girls back to good health. Thanks to a regular dose of npk microbes,

This isasd #1 before she was completely violated

So you can see she still has some ways to go but she’s looking a lot better then they were
Here she is after a major leaf stripping I’ve decided to use elastics to hold my plants back for this grow see how it fairs
I’m trying to stretch everything where I want the main branches to start from I am going to veg these out a few more weeks and then flip
Asd #2 before anything , I really think this one will be the bread winner but I could be wrong( this is the plant that almost dried out in the solo cup because of my laziness)

Here she is all cleaned up and lst’d to shit
Here is my moby XXl #2 she’s about to get lst’d her
So this is what I decided to do right out of the gate , I payed it down with rubber bands and have all nodes pulled up and exposed to the light , all of the moby autos I’ve rubbed have only hit 7th node when first pistol shows .

This brings us up to monday dec 30th /19 I will be bringing in another update in the next day or so the has been a few big changes and excitements, I purchased a used 200 true watt 4 cob led for 20$ i one of the drivers is out and a fan but all cons work so I will be tearing it down and making 4 lights out of it, unless I get a driver for it I will make a small veg space so I can rub things more efficient I’m not sure a lot of fun stuff going on here though just not enough hours in a day to do it all unfortunately, ,I will be uploading my diy bubbleponic cloner and steps on how I made it , I will also be loading it’s first crash test course, my only issue is my small led board I have for it is producing way to much light to clone , so I’m trying to find an alternative, I do have cfls but where’s the fun in setting up a simple lamp ;) and I will need some of your respected opinions on something thank you for taking the time to read my journal I try to dedicate all the time I can , I know I won’t be winning any journals of the months here but hopefully one day I will have the time to do a kick ass dedicated journal , I just need to up my camera game and writing skills , this is the most writing I’ve done since trade school. Happy New Years everyone

does anyone have any advice on repurposing grow lights

grow journal update

:welcome:

hey everyone it’s been quite some time since an update so it going to be a faced paced update with a lot of pics to get to current date.

Environment- so I had a humidifier in my tent and it was putting all this white powder everywhere , so I got rid of it and will be getting one to humidity the whole room my tent is in. So now my humidity is staying around 40% ish . I have all my flaps closed on my tent and I’m pulling air from outside when lights are on ; when lights are off I open the one flap and shut the damper on the air intake from outside , this now keeps my lights on temps as low as 19 degrees if I wanted but I keep it around 23 .now I have all 3 mars 300’s in the tent with a mars 144 reflector , without pulling air from outside my tent was sitting at 33 degrees with everything on( I tested before plants went in) so this is a game changer I’m able to have 100% equal par wall to wall and still keep my temps down , but I have to keep the lights higher then suggested due to intensity I wish I could dim my lights , I could probably get similar results with half the power consumption if it upgraded to a tsl 2000 but I won’t hold my breath on that one .
lights out is sitting around 18 degrees Celsius and about 55% Rh all my plants are receiving 25000 -30000 lux at this point and they all seem to be happy , I slowly increased this from 15000 over the past month ( the lux meter I have does work with leds , though I know it doesn’t pick up everything, I would like to invest in a par meter one day) but thanks to @Kingjoe83 i an really able to optimize my grow lights :thanks:

ASD #1,2- everything is going very well in my garden, since transplanting my 2 Amherst sour diesels into the 7 gal pots they have really started to grow , they are both showing their sex still in veg , I am very happy they are both females( they were feminized so I hope so) I have topped them numerous times and now I’m just letting them fill out before flipping . I did end up putting garlic cloves in my soil with the plants research shows it helps attract benificial fungi and bacteria while helping with pest control , one of the girls got apple wood chips to cover the top of the soil and the other was givin a nice locally grown straw layer on top to help keep that top layer from completely drying out in me

ASD#1- so these girls have been on cruise control for the past few weeks , this girl has really filled out nicely , she’s probably double the size as the #2 oheno. I will be putting a scrog in my tent , but I’m gonna use pvc to go length wise the tent so It will make it so I can have half my tent have a scrog I seen a really good and Seminole design of one. Today I watered this girl with an aloe Vera tonic so we’ll see how she reacts to the soil drench.

i am very happy with how this girl is coming along now. I don’t think I will veg too much longer because I want to get some more strains going , and I have clones taken so I can run these as many times as I want but I am done vegging for 100 days time for some faster turn arounds

ASD #2- so this girl is a little behind her sister , don’t forget she was the one that dried out in the solo cup and was layer flat down , I thought she was gone ( it was all because I didn’t transplant when I should have , I transplanted asd#1 and got lazy , so i watered her and in 24 hrs she drank it all up and almost died. She bounced back nicely but was far behind her sister. Also a few weeks ago I dropped a fan and lost 2 big branches on one side so she lost her round shape ( this is the second time it’s happened to me when cleaning my tent) I will remove all plants before doing anything major from now on , she also received the aloe soil drench

I am waiting for this one to develop some more she was topped recently and I want all her tops to be atleast 6 nodes high before I flip. But I may lay them under a scrog To control stretching heights you can see the one side where you can see the white medium topper that’s the side the two big branches got ripped from

MOBY DICK XXL AUTO- so a lot has happened with this girl since the last update, so I am going to post all the pics from the start of the stretch up until current date, I did some very aggressive lst , I did not remove a single leaf from this plant, which was very hard for me to do
so for the lst I used 1/8th” steel rod rubber coated with a hook on the end , each rod is 6” long I drove them into the soil with just the top hook exposed and used elastic bands to lay the plant down and spread it out , I used the bands to tuck leaves pull nodes into the direction I wanted them , I just wish these autos vegged longer. I seem to not do so well with the autos

GALLERY=media, 1743247][/GALLERY]

So this Moby has come a long way in the past little while but these autos have been a challenge for me to get a decent yeild, I feel tipping would slow them down even more.
but she looks bigger now at this point then my cfl grown auto which pulled just over 1 oz I know it’s sad but that is my largest auto so far , the last one I just pulled 7grams but it was already ripening so I just cut it down , so I could start something else 4 is the limit

WATERING/FEEDING- so when I transplanted up it was into pre amended soil. So for now I will just be watering dechlorinated water , ph’d to 6.5-6.8 . I also add microbes weekly to all my plants . Things have actually been going nicely I am very happy with how all the plants are reacting to their environment ORGANIC PH’ing - up till a month ago I was using this hydroponic ph up and down to keep my water between 6.5-6.8 , I have been struggling to keep my microbial life going even thoe everything I used from my worm farm material to all Omri certified organic products . I let my water dechlorinate for 2 days with air stones before use . And I still struggled to keep my plants healthy with my organic style growing . Now I believe that oh down and up I used was killing everything I was working hard to produce. Now I don’t ph my water buckets , I take 1 gal of water and I ph down that with small amounts of LEMON JUICE and every since I made the switch I’ve seen nicer growth , now I will only ph down with lemon juice if my water ph is above 6.8

today I am going to be making an aloe Vera tonic to water all my plants with , I found a good source of aloe Vera so I am going to try Foliar sprays and soil drenches with this and

MICROBES- I have also found a local source of microbes this company has a dream team of microbes tailored for vegetative stage and a bloom stage version and I am applying once a week to each plant , it also has been a game changer, I was trying to get real growers recharged but it’s hard to get in Canada and the only option was a little to pricy for me, the stuff I am using I can purchase at my local grow snop

So this brings us almost up to date in my garden , I really wish you guys all the best and thanks for taking the time to help my out and learn with me along in this grow.

Long post, wowzers! Your plants are looking good man! :bravo:

well done @Kingjoe83 on getting him to maximize his light!:high-five:
Thanks for stopping by and showing some love brother , I apologize for the long post , I just seem to not have enough time in my day to do everything . I have been making sure to take regular pics so when I do have the time I can get you guys up to date without missing anything good.
hope you had a great Christmas and a wonderful New Years my friend

Hey not a problem my man!! I usually have super long updates in my journal as well. We did have a good Christmas, I’m glad the holidays are over though. Now we’re struggling to get through a week of -30 or colder temperatures. This morning it’s was -38 and my car didn’t start, so I’m playing hooky from work today.... brrrrrr

Hope you had a great holiday as well bro!!!

Hey everyone , just wanted to stop in say hi , the winter has been pretty busy with snow plow season at hand here in northern worst cased Ontario. But things are slowing down I have time to breath , and I realized I pretty much abandoned my journal. Something in which I said I wouldn’t do. But as I get older for some reason I seem to not live up to my own expectations and commitments, they get out on the back burner . I am a father of 3 so you can figure where my grow stuff lays on that totem pole . Pretty much laying in the dirt if you ask my wife haha . I wish I could have more time in the day .

I’m just gonna get you guys caught up with just a now photo to much to post from last time I posted , I did take pics still.

But before I do so. I purchased a second grow tent a 2x3 multiroom tent , to try and get a perpetual grow going to where in harvesting a small plant every 30-45 days ish but I plant to take full advantage of my 2x2 flower chamber .

can I get some input from you guys on any perpetual growing done. In a 2x2 space how could I efficiently do this @Pennywise @Kingjoe83 any advice fellas, I know penny had done the perpetual journal in which I did check out , but being a 2x2how could I do this or should I just be trying to run 4 small plants and make that my cycle .
I can fit a like 9 3gal square pots in the tent at most or 12 2 gal square pots

So I had a good friend of mine brang me a light the other day and it was hard for me not to get chocked up over it. But I was given a quantum board light with a meanwe driver , like top of the line light for sure. I guess he seen me working with the old style mars hydro lights . And decided I needed to stop living in the past , I had a 4 cob 200w light in the 2x2 space ( one cob driver needs replaced so only 3 working , all my other lights are flowering the Amherst sour diesels in the 2x4 . So this light I was given completely decimated the cob light with only pulling 75w from the wall. I was given a fusion board 240 by photon phantom . and I am so impressed with this little light man wow This guy has gone above and beyond to help me and I appreciate the fuck out of it. He also brang me some amazing flower to try , some Bruce banger ( I think this is the right one) and some cheese quake .

So here she is such a beautiful light

So if you guys haven’t guess who gave me this light @Kingjoe83 is the guy that has single handedly restored my faith in humanity

so this tent has a bunch of sour diesel clones going in the one chamber , the other has a few clones aswell. But I got a pack of bubbas gift by humboldt seed organization and a northern lights by canuks . So I’m hoping to really test this light kit with these 2 indica dom strains

I hope to get a nice stash of mother plants so I can just rip clones and start getting some real consistency going in my garden. And then I’ll be able to really be able to master my phenos I am going to wait till lights on tonight to take some pics of the sativas growingdownstairs but things are coming along nicely, I couldn’t be happier with how this grow has been going so far

So stay tuned I will be back with an actual update of the sativas and get us all caught up.
