Grandpa Likes To Squeeze Stuff: Solventless Extracts, Rosin, Pressed Here!

Maybe someone out there can help. I have a Dulytek DHP7, a hammer press mold, and 100 micron bags. When I first started testing the press, I'd tear some cannabis into small pieces and hammer it into the mold. For a rectangular shaped bag, I'd place two pieces I'd molded with the press in.

I found that something wasnt right because it looked like all the rosin was seeping into the space between the bag and the parchment paper. Maybe I wasnt putting enough in or the cannabis hadnt cured properly yet.

After that, I just started placing the cannabis directly into the 100 micron bag, after turning it inside out. I'd heat the press up to 210 F and press for 145 seconds. It worked, but the yield using this method is not too great.

I'm looking for ways to do a better job pressing. Should I get different shaped bags or a different shaped mold? Should I try the hammer press mold again?

Any help is appreciated.

I can't find the DHP-7 on the Dabpress website. If you mean the 2x4 Pre Press Mold ( Flower & Hash ) | dp-pm4007s, that is probably currently the best choice if you want to press 14 gram single pucks. The pucks from the 40mm cylindrical mold will fit into the 2.5" wide bags sideways, but not bottle tech style. The 3" bags are too wide for the pucks. I looked into custom bags or sleeves, but the minimum quantity is 500 bags. That's too many for me. I'm looking into making a 38mm cylindrical pre-press mold so that I can use the standard bags.

You can also press two 7gm 30mm diameter pucks at once. I cut the bottom out of the 2" x 4.5" bags, then cut the sleeve in half, so that two pucks can be made from each. This works, but takes a little more time than making a single puck.

Something to keep in mind is the larger your puck diameter, the longer you will need to maintain the pressure on the pucks. Two 30mm diameter pucks take about 3 min, but a 38-40mm puck will take an extra 30 seconds or more.

Something I ran into during my last 30mm puck making session with the aluminum mold was that the pucks were extremely difficult to remove. I'll try a food safe teflon lubricant to see if that works during my next session.

It’s a 7 ton Dulytec after looking it up in the sponsors looks like a fine press . Next chance of a press post pics of it . You have a thread here full of help . I still haven’t used anything under 160 micron bags ! Most of mine have been 190 degrees Fahrenheit at 2-3 minutes. 2-7 gram pucks each press .

Thanks for all the help. I'll post some pictures when I press next of the before and after. Here's a stock picture of my 7 ton press.

Have 3x5 plates. Looking at some pre-press molds. I like bottle tech but is there a reason to go with the rectangular one over the cylinder? Which style gives you guys the best return? It looks like I can place two 7grams pucks bottle tech on my plates. I'm using press club 2x4 filters, if I get the cylinder press, which diameter would fit my bags best?

Knowing what I know now... I’d just build one out of pvc and a bolt and washer for the pressing ends.
Pressed tight pucks, you can cut those filter bags in half and get two presses with 7 gram pucks.

Grrrrr why do I keep finding cool chit on the zon...

DP 5.5x7 frameless plate kit with the goodies for $369. I think that would compliment my frame really well. I love my 5x6 plates and they heat fairly evenly for diy shite but I would absolutely love the finer temp control and larger capacity.

To kick it up a notch for another $160 I could toss on this beauty. 5,000 lb digital scale with 4 load cells. to get a true bag pressure reading. Am I right in this line of thought here as far as true bag pressure or is there a better way?

Yes I realize a pressure gauge (even a digital one) on my bottle jack is another way to maintain consistent pressure while pressing. It doesn't truly reflect bag pressure without doing math that makes my head hurt. I'm looking for as fine of a control as I can and the digital scale resoulution is 1lb.

I really want to make some Diamonds & sauce.

That looks like a good press to me. Try getting some 120u or 160u bags and squeeze for a little longer; I normally go 3-4 minutes, or until it stops bubbling/flowing. Not really sure what your having trouble with. Practice, practice, practice!

I love my caged plates from DabPress. They work really well.

What do you think about the scale? Am I over thinking it?
For what I'm seeing on the interweb I need to be able to dial in a consistent 250-300lbs bag pressure for the process.

I’ve never used one, but I’m not that concerned about it. It all depends on YOUR needs/desires. I naturally do believe you will be more precise with constant psi. My recommendation would be to try some squeezing without the pressure gauge and see how it goes. Then, if you’re still in need of more precise psi spend the cash on the gauge. Make sense?

In my experience you get to know your equipment and what it takes to get the job done. I don’t do huge jobs though either. I normally only do a few days or a weeks worth at a time.

What do you mean by bag pressure? Is this the total pressure applied to the bag, or the pounds per square inch on the bag?

My ten ton Dabpress DripTech press has a piston in the cylinder that is two square inches. This means that it exerts a force of 3000lb when the pressure gauge reads 1500lb. With nothing between the 3" x 5" plates the surface area of the plates is subjected to 200 PSI. Now when I squish a 30mm diameter puck which has a surface area of 1.1sq inch it starts compressing. When fully compressed, the puck diameter increases to 55mm dia, or 3.7 square inches. That means the pressure on the puck is 3000lbs, or 810PSI. Do you see what I mean by the difference?

I think your best bet is to make a conversion chart for this. You'll need to squish once, and take the measurements of the squished bag. You'll need to make your rosin pucks all a standard size to be able to get a standardized result. I've put some thought into this for myself. I came up with a mold for the rosin, so that it's always the same size. This would give consistent results when loaded with the same volume of rosin. Sneak up on the pressure once to determine the pressure you need, and use that figure for all future presses.

EDIT: What it all boils down to is that the scale will do nothing more for you than a good pressure gauge will.

A 12 pack of bud light is no match , I can drink the whole 12 and never feel it !

I was that way back in my youth. All the drinking I did made it so I was still somewhat functional after 24 draft at Dick Turpin's.
