i got my staff cheap, he was the runt of the litter, now he is bigger than all the rest of the litter, he is well trained and well loved, he loves other dogs, not got any nasty in him, he has a mixture of dry biscuits and wet food like you give him, plus the odd bone from the butchers, and the odd branch he drags back from the fields, they also need losts of training like you mention, not so much long walks but more physical stuff so they keep their bulk, i take mine in long grass and find him a big branch and play with him for a bit then he drags it through the grass and this keeps him fit, he also loves tugs of war in the flat, but he is the softest thing in the world, wont go to sleep unless he is lying in the bed next to me or on the sofa, he wont sleep unless he got the quilt or blanket over him.
but once they are trained their the best dogs by far, i would not have another breed now i have had staffs, but the one i got now names tyson and i didnt name him but tyson is huge for a staff, the muscle around his face are huge, he has 2 big lumps on his head and their solid muscle, i say he looks like he has been bought up on steroids, he has a taste for my plants as well, and the odd bud if i try and quick dry some,
he things he is human im sure of it, i had a problem of him shitting and pissing in the bedroom, it was the only place he messed, still does on the odd time when im out all day, but i have plastice down and paper so it dont trash the place, but since i started putting his food bowl on the bedroom he has stopped messing their now when im in, its just when i have been out with the kids he messes on the odd occasion, people pull their dogs away thinking he is going to be nasty but when my dog lies down and waits for them to come to him they soon see how nice he really is, glad you took on a rescue dog, the homes are full of them, kids have them as a vicous symbol and find out they are either not vicious or take to much looking after, but once you get them trained you then get the rewards of having a true family pet living with you, my dog is like a human, my mom got a boxer and its a bit wild but she taks it to dog training which dont cost much and now its stopped messing in the house and now walks by your side instead of pulling and walking on his back legs, these dog trainers know what they are doing, its all about the treats, have some sausage in your pocket then when you walk him hold it out so his nose is by your waist then walk the dog so its following the sausage then get him to sit by raising the treat in front of his nose and push the treat close so it makes him sit then give it him, and then just repeat he will follow the treat then learn that if he walks at your side he gets a treat, then once he got used to that keep the treat in your pocket and only bring it out when you want him to sit, thats how i trained mine, took a while but now people ask me how i trained him to walk at heel without pulling or trying to get to other dogs.
i learned him to lie down in the flat, then when i was out and seen a dog waling towards us id get a treat out and get him to lie down, then hold the treat while the other dog comes up to him or walks past then i let him up to say hello or he stays till the dog has walked past then i gave him a treat, now he lies down when he sees a dog coming and waits till they are either saying hello to him and then he gets up and has a sniff or they walk past and he gets up when they have gone past.
i also had problems with him pulling on the lead when we first went out, so what i then did was walked and then as soon as he pulled id turn round give the lead a tug and walk the other way, then when he caught up and started pulling id do the same thing, its best if your in a park when you do this as you can turn in any way you like, the idea is to give the lead a sharp tug when he is starting to pull then turn and walk the other way, as soon as he runs past and pulls again give it a sharp tug then turn another direction, the idea is to make the dag unsure which way your going to go so he then stays with you so he dont get a pull on his lead, it took my dog 3 days to learn not to pull, so now i have got him an extendible lead, and now he has more freedom to go where he likes and he dont pull and when he has gone to far and the lead has locked and he can feel it he then turns round and waits or comes back to me before starting again, so now i have no problems with him what so ever, his last owner more or less kept him inside as he didnt have the time to look after him as he and his girlfriend had a baby so i had him, but these dogs are really clever and love learning new things, when i was teaching him to lie down i done it in the flat, i got him to sit then when he sat id put the treat in front of his noes and lower it to the ground so he lied down, i dont this 5 or 6 times at the most and now he can do it when i say lie down, so i dont think you will have any problems with the training, some dogs take longer than others, but you will get their, then the rerwards are brilliant, i see people struggling down the street with their dogs pulling them along and i always wonder why they dont train them, repetition is the key and treats are the best way, without the treats the dog dont think your interesting enough to come back to, but if every time you called his name you got his attention and give him a treat then it wont be long before he clues up that when he hears that word he knows to come to you as he is getting something more interesting than the dog he is trying to get to, bacon, chicken and sausage are the best treats i have found,
sorry for the long post, i just love dogs and spend lots of time getting the rewards for having a dog that is well trained, it is all about the treats, everytime you get him to sit when you say sit and give an action with your hands, i remember my last dog, i was talking to a friend and the dog was playing then i couldnt see him and he was by a main road, the road we cross to go home, he must of gone through the deep grass and lost me and decided to go home, he was about to go into a busy road and their was cars coming, i just shouted her name and said down and she just lay down on the curb, i told her to stay and then praised her and she stayed their till i got to her, obviosuly you can give the treats less often and swap the reward for a chase of a stick or a ball, dogs are clever and they will learn, staffs i find are the easiest out of all the dogs i have, my moms boxer is the hardest dog i have had to train, she cant walk her but im training her and the dog trainer are training her so my mom nad daughter can walk her without her pulling,
