A good friend was in the Navy in the mid-80s. He said that there were a few frantic times, but that they still managed to enjoy. Said they smoked a lot in the reactor room area because many officers (lifers?) tended to stay out. And that they would exhale into trash bags a lot.

I'll pass your stories along to him - he'll enjoy them as much as I did.
