Fresh Harvest Infused Cannabis Oil

Another successful FHO run with a pressure cooker. This is looking like it might be the best option of all.

A repost from the Study Hall:

Used the Instant Pot the other day and it worked great. We set it for 1 hour low pressure (5.8 psi) with 1 liter of olive oil and some water to help break it down with the immersion blender. When it was done the "cooking" part, we let it slowly decompress to room temp and pressure (4 more hours). Hardly any smell whatsoever. We were able to use a baster to pull the majority of the "clean" oil from the top (you can see it in the left jar) and the remainder we put in the fridge to separate oil from water. This batch was CB Dutch Treat and today we are doing the same for White Widow.

My wife was just telling me it is crucial to have at least 25% of the total cooker (container) volume be water, since straight oil under pressure can be dangerous (and likely will damage your Instant Pot and its seals). My wife refused to leave it unattended the first time! After our second run we are now confident.

Btw, WW oil was grrrrrreat.

Instant pot make 6-in-1, 9-in-1, etc versions. Will any of the instant pots do your recipe?

We have a 7-in-1 6 quart. With a full liter of olive oil and plant material it filled up half the inner container, which is about as high as you want to fill any pressure cooker. You can buy additional silicone seal rings for oil and regular food use since the rings will absorb the scent!

Advantage of the 7-1 over the 6-1 is the Yogurt feature which allows a very low and constant temperature if you wanted to infuse (@110F) over longer periods of time. Using it for that is a bit of a hack, since most (electric) cookers these days cook (at their lowest setting) at a temp somewhere between 150-185F.

Thank you

I've got a pressure cooker. My wife would not approve lol.

For you oil slickers, do you separate your trim or do you mix it all together. I know that's a bit of a loaded question as some people are chasing certain terpenes, but in general for recreational purposes, would I regret mixing all my trim together?

SweetSue, a few questions please.

1. I've seen you've advised against using an MBM2 for the FHO process for fear of probable boil over. Since you've discovered the violent boiling is most likely a result of adding lecithin at an early stage, do you think I'd probably still experience boil over without lecithin?

2. If I prepared for potential boil over (i.e. drip pan), am I going to loose an appreciable amount oil or just mainly water?

3. If I jar and freeze my buds the same day of harvest, can I expect comparable results as using freshly harvested material for the FHO process?

Thanx

Super helpful & informative thread, thanks OP!

You'll get the greatest potency using buds, of course, but there are trichomes on every inch of the plant, so no, I don't see you regretting using all of your trim.

If the oil turns out to be less potent than you'd hoped you have the option to use it for an additional infusion. The EVOO will hold a tremendous number of cannabinoids. We've more-or-less determined that three times through may be the saturation point for a homemade oil.

I'm not familiar with just how much mess Hizzy got when his MB2 boiled over, so I'd be guessing about the drip pan, although that sounds like a good idea.

We now add the lecithin at the end of the process (I'll get an edit on the opening post to reflect this critical change). Since making this change I haven't yet had a problem with boiling, but then I'm using buds now that've either been flash-dried or dried low and slo, both methods offering product close in quality to fresh harvest buds. They don't have any water in them, but they kept all the terpenes and flavonoids. I'm boiling off very little water these days.

The freezing doesn't effect quality or potency. Professionals freeze theirs within four hours of harvest.

Super helpful & informative thread, thanks OP!

You're very welcome. :hugs: Give it a go and see what all the excitement's about. It's an amazing oil. :battingeyelashes:

Brownie oil adaptation

8 grams of low and slo-dried Carnival buds.

I started by removing the blossoms from most of the stem.

IMG_442211.JPG

Added a half cup of coconut oil and hit it with the immersion blender until it was all broken up.

IMG_442313.JPG

I dug out those bits of stem floating on the top.

It took 10 minutes to come to a boil.

45 minutes later and I'm happy with the level of decarb. The brownies bake at 350. By the time they're done baking most of the remaining THCa will be converted.

Lecithin is added at the end, stirred in thoroughly, and tossed into the fridge for six hours. Brought back to liquid form it gets used as the oil component in the brownie recipe.

The reward...... a week's worth of meds. :slide:

All the things I've learned from this thread and the low and slo thread have brought me to this delightful point where I now have an easy and effective method to produce a quick oil for my brownie meds. :woohoo:

I love brainstorming. :battingeyelashes: :green_heart:

Fantastic addition to the thread Sue! I love the small recipe quickbatch. I think most folks have 8 grams laying around after a harvest hehe. Coolio!

Edit: how come coconut oil this time?

Great update! Can you point me to the "low and slow" thread?

Here ya go andlhalped.

DrZiggy's Low And Slow Drying: Maximizing Your Harvest

There's a link at the beginning of the thread that takes you to the outline of the successful process, but be aware that the current pages are full of experimentation with some exciting options that aren't low and slo, but are complimentary. Feel free to jump to current and ask questions. The thread is already over 80 pages long.

When I make brownies I prefer coconut oil for the taste. I have made them with olive oil, but that's an acquired taste, to be sure. :laughtwo: The brownies are for me, and I don't treat anything other than a case of psoriasis I've been searching for the right approach to that doesn't include me giving up all my favorite foods, so the brownies can be thought of as recreational, and for rec we always choose coconut oil. The olive oil formulations are best in capsule form, IMHO.

:thumb: my brownies just came out of the oven and are cooling,

:circle-of-love: yuuummm brownies -:Namaste:

Mmmmm.... I've learned that not all brownies taste as delicious as my Carnival brownies. Some chemovars you have to almost choke them down, but Carnival is mouthwatering. What did you use in making yours Dynamo?

I just picked up an "Instant Pot" at the new Wegman's around the corner from me. Plan on reading the instructions tonight and I have some Train Wreck trim and popcorn bud that needs making into oil tomorrow. :circle-of-love::peace:

:slide: Your first batch Dave. I'm sooooo excited!!! :yahoo: I can't wait to hear your report. Take good notes. :battingeyelashes:

:thumb: my brownies were from an assortment of strains, Northern lights ,Durban poison, Critical Jack,Pineapple express harvested slightly early, PM issues. I maxed out my MBM with bud and butter as I was out of coconut oil. I have a six pack box of Ghirardelli triple chocolate brownie mix, make that a three pack box now. I started bread yesterday and then a retarded raise in the frig overnight and cooked early this morning. Early afternoon was time for brownies and there is no choking these brownies down they are tasty. The wife and I walked up to the neighbors for dinner with their local steel-head salmon and my homemade porch wine.
My plants are reaching for the sky even after a second sulfur burn last night, second day in a row and they looking very happy. I was quite pleased the sulfur burn wasn't as messy as I expected, sure be glad when it stops my PM problem. What a great day!:woohoo::Namaste:
