First time grower looking for some advice

Hi there,

I'm looking for a little advice on my first plant.

I have started a grow journal but dont seem to be getting any feedback there.

Watering around every 3 days

Temp is around 65 degrees 70rh light off
And 75 degrees 63 rh light on

Still doing 16hrs on 8 hrs off

Plant seems to growing outward more the upward. Is that good or bad ? My light is roughly 18inchs from the plant. One leaf has an orange edge on it?

Should I move to a bigger size pot soon or stay with the 1 gallon for now ?

I havent seen your journal yet or I surely would have commented. Yes, tell us more about your grow... my special interest is in how often you water.. since you seem to think it should be a 3 day interval. I suspect that watering incorrectly is a part of the problem. As Chris said, we need to know what sort of soil you are in, and what you adjust your pH to, and also any nutrients you may have already been giving them.

Hi thanks for the quick reply

I'm just using an organic soil from a local nursery and I dont currently have a ph tester for my water so I'm just using spring bottled water. I only water my pot when it is light in weight. I have full pot of dry soil for comparison. I have only used a small amount of nutrient for seeding as recommended on the bottles of general hydroponics

Hello using organic soil with salt based nutes is like your left hand fighting you right hand , organic soil requires organic nutes , the microbes in organic soil is what helps keep your ph in check and it is a lot harder to give your plants a nute burn with organic nutes , these are a great nute product but it will kill all of the microbes in your soil .Either grow organic or grow with salt based nutes but you can't do both at the same time.

Oh ok thanks this is all new to me!

So what soil would you recommend with the general hydroponics nutes?

Or what nutes do you recommend for regular soil from a local nursery?

I wouldn't change your soil now this far in to the grow just saying this is nolonger a organic grow and the nutes you have can be used in any grow just use only 1/4 strength as to what it says on the bottle for plants that size and as they grow you can slowly increase the amount of nutes you are adding , salt based nutes are a lot stronger than organic nutes and are absorbed a lot quicker and easier for you plants .I would be adding calmag to your water also mj loves calmag , plants that size don't need a lot of nutes but they do need calcium and magnesium (calmag), don't buy a organic calmag either if you use those nutes .the best money you will spend will be on a decent ppm meter(pen)and a ph meter(pen ), they are a must if you aren't growing outside in soil .

Im going to say lamp burn only on that one leaf if it was all over then i would say nute burn. Flush and upgrade container size wait a few days then give nutes.

Ph in soil is less important for the reason that ph in soil changes from top of pot to bottom and somewhere in the root zone is in the right ph 4 uptake.

Light burn would be on the top of the plant not the sides of the leaf , I would say they need some calmag and I would look into what the ph of the water/nutes I was giving the plants , if 1 plant is light burnt they all would be as there are all the same distance to the light roughly

Any soil should work just fine Robertson, including the one you are in now. I did the same thing back a few years ago, and bought the best soil I could find at the local hardware store, an organic one just like yours, and then used salt based Fox Farms nutes with it. It is done all the time. Now, almost everyone that truly goes organic never goes back to commercial nutrient farming, there is nothing at all wrong with what you are trying to do except that the flora suit of GH nutes are made for hydroponic gardens. So yes, you need a good soil type fertilizer for later in flower, but you probably don't really need any nutrients during the veg stage with that good soil anyway. Can you order online? Amazon can supply a lot of very good nutes if you can get it where you are at. Tell the nursery that you are looking for a soil based flowering nute for a tomato... they will get it, and tomatoes have very close to the same nutrient needs.
Big kudos on proper watering and using the lift method to determine the time to water! You are going to do well. The pH is not a crisis yet... but you do need to get a way to adjust to the 6.3-6.8 range by late veg and going into flower, certainly before you start adding nutrients.
Good luck in this grow, and already I predict you are going to do well at this, just based on how you water... that is a really really big deal for me. The reason i keyed in on your 3 day interval thing, was as the root ball expands, that time should be diminishing a bit with each wet/dry cycle, until it is time to up-pot, restarting the 3 day cycle.

Thanks for the advice!

I wasnt really planning on doing a true organic grow. So I will stop the nutes for now and go ask my local nursery what the recommend. Later in the grow i will consider my GH nutes for veg and flower stage. I will also look into getting myself a ph tester. Emilya I do have the ability to order from amazon. I will look into that

egads... sorry... got to give my input on this one.
Flushing would only be called for if you had poured a lot of the hydroponic nutes in there, but it didnt sound like you have yet... The plants are still very young and it is unlikely things have built up in that soil that need to be flushed out already. Then, the age of the plants absolutely makes it inappropriate yet to uppot. The only justification to uppot is when that plant can use up all the water you can get in that container, in 24 hours or less. If it still takes 2, 3 or even 5 days to empty that container, you still have a lot of roots to develop before you would want to up-pot.
Lastly... I am not a fan of giving a young plant in good soil, any nutes. Please read the last few lines of my signature for an explanation of why I say this.
