First Grow: Outdoor Autoflower Blueberry & AK-47 In Pots With Dr. Earth Soil

Thursday update!

I took the AK-47 buds and the driest buds of Blue 2 and jarred them up after 5 days of hanging in the box. I left the thickest Blue 2 buds to dry out more. Everything in the jars seems to be running around 74% RH but I didn't want the outside to get too crispy which might make it more difficult to evenly distribute the moisture when it's time for the cure.

It is tough it is to dry out your harvest when the ambient RH is as high as it is here, particularly in the evenings when I'm home. I'll need to make a lot more rice balls to get this down into the mid 60s!

Friday for sure and I smell a three-day weekend a'coming!

We had a thunderstorm last night at around 6pm here in LA! It goddamned rained in August! And the humidity was disgusting. I felt like I had never left NY. Yuck. Even though the rain lasted all of 20 minutes, the moisture hung around for a few more hours and air drying anything was not happening.

I went back to the rice balls for Blue 2 and AK middle and managed to get the RH in the jars into the 60s, but they were back up again this morning.

The rest of Blue 2 that was hanging in the box came down this morning and is sitting in open jars in the shed along with the jars from last night's rice ball procedure. I hope it's dry enough in there!

I had to dump 21 grams of Blue 2 (not wet/not dry) into the freezer bag o'trim because of bud rot. One of the ones I tossed was one of the larger colas, and then some smaller ones as well. As I mentioned before the freezer trim will be cooked into lotion. Botrytis is killed by heating to 266° though from what I've read hot air will not do it. It would need to be steamed at 212° for 30 minutes at least, but if I decarb in coconut oil (which boils at 351°, well over decarb heat) I should be okay as well. I will post the process when I get to it, which will be after the rest of AK comes down to end the "grow" portion of the grow journal.

And speaking of the remaining AK-47, here it is on day 106, along with shots of two of the larger buds. You can see new pistils well as new calyx growth. This really could go to Halloween! But I'll check the trichomes tomorrow and see if it's ready ;)

Thanks for the vote of confidence! But I'm not sure I would base what autoflower seeds to buy on those pics. If you want impressive looking pics check out Blueberry 2 just before the chop. It was 761 grams of wet bud.

You should read the descriptions and reviews on the 420 website and remember that inside grows and outside grows can produce completely different plants. I'll have another AK-47 smoke report later on in this journal (I think I posted two so far for this plant, the green review was "feh" and the more cured review was "better").

Stay tuned! :)

I knew it!!!!! I was looking this morning when I got back from high desert like who the HELL watered my plants without asking or telling me

A steaming Saturday to all. Where's the sweating emoji?

Watered the AK this morning. 1 tsp TigerBloom and 3 ml cal/mag+. PPM in was 462 and out was 614 (hmm...). Skipped the Open Sesame because I can't see any reason to keep hammering the phosphorus while I wait for it to ripen. I don't need more growth, I need amber!

Also, since it's been 1 week from the Blue 2 chop, it was time to check the low-and-slow buds. Pulled the bag out of the fridge and let it stand on the counter for an hour, then I put them in a jar with a hygrometer. 87% RH...way too high so back in the fridge they go for another week.

Here's a pic of a box-hung-now-early-days-jarred bud next to buds from the fridge. Fridge ones may be a little greener but that could just be because they aren't as dry. I'll take another pic next week and we'll retest.

As I mentioned to Moonshine yesterday, the Blueberry 2 now has a hint of blueberry when I open the jars. No idea why this is different from Blueberry 1 except it did run 15 days longer.

Could be a different phenotype

I see that word a lot on journals and never understood what it meant, so I looked it up. It reads like phenotype is related to the grow environment. Two of the same strain grown in the same environment should show the same characteristics, no?

From leafly.com

The plant’s genetic makeup, also called a genotype, acts as a blueprint for growth: it allows a spectrum of physical possibilities, but it is up to the environment to induce these characteristics. The physical expression of a genotype is referred to as a phenotype, which is simply defined as the traits that the environment pulls out from the plant’s genetic code. Everything from color, shape, smell, and resin production are affected by the environment.

Unless phenotype is used with different meanings in different contexts. There's so much new language to learn here!

So I've always understood it as;
If the environment was the same with two seeds of the same parents, they can carry more traits of one or the other. If they express those traits differently it separates the genotype into sub categories or phenotypes.
Hence the 4 different phenotypes of Jack Herer.
Or simply look at my outdoor grow. 3 seeds, I picked from the same plant and they all grow vastly different.

I also believe this ties into "stabilizing" genes. You basically breed the different phenos out until the desired remains.

Monday/Labor Day late update. Heat broke today but it did pour about 3am last night, so I had to shake off the buds this morning so they didn't rot! Got a few macro pics before heading off a party – same food as July 4th meaning no hot dogs or burgers :-(

Not enough amber here to make me anxious to chop so I'm waiting for at least next Saturday. The pistils look really crunchy in these shots but that's to be expected for day 109 of a 56 day grow ;) Going by the trichs not the pistils.

More below the pics so don't scroll too fast!

Blueberry 2 is curing now in jars with Boveda 62s because yesterday I left the buds in bowls in the shed most of the day and it turned out to be a day with ambient RH in the mid 50s! So now they are hovering around 60% RH in the jars (even with the packs) so I'll be burping every three days for the next week. Same with the middle of AK-47.

Blueberry 1 and the AK-47 top are in long-term cure mode now but I only have a Boveda 62 in the jar with the Blue 1 top bc it got a bit too dry. Next time I burp I'll put a pack in each jar. Need to buy more Bovedas...I had no idea how many jars this was going to take!

Also, I bought more hygrometers because I still feel like I'm flying a bit blind with all the jars and only 3 meters. And I bought a very small dehumidifier for the closet where the jars are curing so if I need to dry any out or burp them they won't get any wetter from the damp air. They arrive tomorrow.

Thanks and good night!
