First Grow - Indoor Now - Outside & Inside Later

Anytime UncleC

The extra 20-30 mins it takes me to wash a couple large outdoor plants, along with the way the leaves seem to stand at attention after draining over night, seems to me to make trimming so much easier. But then again, maybe practice is making me better and faster at trimming LOL

And Kriaze, bubble bags are definitely on the "to buy" list, just haven't convinced myself to pull the trigger just yet LOL

Prior to now I was able to use the potential trichome loss concern as an excuse for not doing bud washing. But now that you've shown me this lab test report my "good excuse" has been pulled out from under my feet and I'll have to come to terms with the fact that I'm just lazy. LOL!

Good evening friends

I have decided I have had enough for one day and thought I would go over my bud washing procedure as I do it somewhat differently than posted elsewhere..

Thank you so much for this information and for the studies you shared later on in the thread. Invaluable knowledge. I've been leaning towards bud washing for my first harvest -- this cements it for me.

You are much welcome Glimmer :) I started this journal to document my grow for my own use more than anything. Along the way I made some friends who have helped me with their knowledge and experience :) For me, the best way to pay back the help, is to pay it forward by sharing my experiences and what I learn with others :)

Another (former) member tested washed and unwashed buds back in March - here-

Strain test results

and also got slightly higher levels of thc and whatnot. I don't know how the samples are tested. Could be variation among the two comparison samples or - maybe the washing process enables a more efficient test?

As promised, more pictures of ongoing activities around here these days

First off, a picture of the wash buckets after sitting about 36 hrs

As you can see, the second bucket, the cold soda wash, has turned to an orange reddish color. My first thoughts on the color change was that the washed off contaminates were being oxidized but later realized any oxidation should occur in the H2O2 water which does change color but only slightly.

While washing a few plants this evening, I noticed that the soda wash was turning a pale green color as I washed. This got me to thinking about the washed bud testing higher, which lead to our discussion the other day about why it tests higher. These two things lead me to again consider whether the washing was leaching out chlorophyll, there by reducing the weight of non THC content in the bud which would also account for the reported "smoothness" of the smoke later and the faster curing times.

Makes me wish I had the means to test the water to see if the green coloring was indeed due to chlorophyll.

OK, enough of the brain twisting, couple puffs of my pipe and more pictures :)

Branch before prepping for the wash

the same branch after being prepped. I only take the fan leaves and any leaves with well developed stems at this point. The smaller leaves, even some that are 5 bladed, often have trichomes around there base with these strains, so I save them for the trim bag :)

And a couple of colorful bud shots for you porn lovers ;) One Cherry Bomb and the other is Cluster Bomb

That's our show for tonight friends, tune in next time for pictures of the Growing Jungle of Hanging Bud :tokin:

Wow! That Cluster Bomb is breathtaking! Made me gasp right out loud. What fabulously surgery produce you've got there sir. :battingeyelashes:

I find your thoughts on the wash removing chlorophyll intriguing. It hit a chord within my brain that made perfect sense in some way. There's no denying the wash results in a smoother smoke, IMO. I use a milder dilution of both lemon juice and baking soda. Maybe I should rethink that next time and mix it up as per the instructions and see if there's any difference.

Well, this was nice. The best you can hope for when you start a journal is to spark someone else's curiosity, eh? Well done TheCelt. Reps for that.

Thank you Sue, although I have yet to smoke the Cluster Bomb, I love they way they grow and they trim up easy and beautifully I just hope she smokes as good as she looks LOL

As for the chlorophyll, curiosity got the better of me (If I was a cat I would have to have a million lives :) )so I went on a research mission. Although my memory of Organic Chemistry is cloudy after so many years, I half remembered studying chlorophyll and that it wasn't soluble in water. I was right, BUT here's the kicker. I just read an article, about chlorophyll and hash making, and why it turns green when using alcohol for the wash. A question was posed about how to get rid of the "green". A biologist gave a long and somewhat technical answer which I won't even attempt to repeat here, I couldn't pronounce half the words LOL

The jist if it was, under certain conditions, say a slightly basic solution (soda wash maybe???) that chlorophyll will be released from plant matter and eventually precipitate out of the water.

After reading that, I even more so wish I had kept in touch with my old organics professor. Knowing him as I did, he would be more than likely to share a pipe with me and be interested enough to take a sample of my water and do a Mas Spec analysis of it more me LOL

For that matter, he'd no doubt do a Mass Spec of my bud and tell me everything that was in it LOL

Good morning/afternoon friends :)

Needed a break from trimming so I decided to do a quick photo update :)

Sticky fingers yesterday

Some bud porn, the last Cherry Bomb in the field. She will likely be harvested tomorrow

This is the one remaining Cluster Bomb, looking at the nice green/white pistils showing and no obvious signs of bud rot, I think I will leave her go a few more days :)

And lastly, some trimmed bud from the Cherry Bomb I cut and washed last night. She has no red coloring like some of the others but the buds on these Cherry Bombs are massive and rock hard.

Smoke em if ya got em and have a great day :)

Sticky fingers and the aroma of buds drying.
:yummy:
Life is good in Celt's neighborhood.
:thumb::high-five::blunt:

Yesterday I was trimming one of the last Cherry Bombs, I wasn't overly fussy about the smoke from the stuff I harvested from the indoor grow, but LOVE the smell of this outdoor CB. It has this fresh, sweet, green aroma. I really hope it smokes and tastes as good as it smells now :)

Thanks Glimmer and yes, I spend most of my days the past week, and for another few days, cutting prepping, washing and trimming LOL I catch up here in the AM while the coffee kicks in, pop in and out through the day when I need a break, and for a bit in the evening before I decide its time to sleep LOL

Later today I will chop 2 more plants, leaving me 2 big ones and a couple small ones left to do :)

All caught up again and some fine sights I've seen on here today TheCelt. It seems that if I even blink I miss a lot of good info and updates over here, well I'm back up to speed now and I'd like to say that those buds are looking tasty, it also seems to be getting pretty conclusive that bud washing only makes the buds better. Just waiting on the bubble bag experiment now mate ;)

All the best :thumb:

Thanks Kraize and KK

Its been a busy week and a half but starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel LOL other than the 3 unknown sativas that may or may not finished before the cold weather hits, I have 3 large girls and a couple small ones left standing LOL One plant, the big Cluster Bomb, will likely standing until mid week next week, the rest will be cut in the next couple days :)
