First CFL Grow Using 30 Watt CFLs

Great photos DP I'm also growing the fruit spirit, we can compare results as we go. You look like you'll be good for smoke for the next little while. Keep up the good work :thumb:

first few pictures are the harvest from the afgan skunk 2ltr dwc hempy with no air stone,

now we move onto the plants i got growing at the moment, first off is both the autos, one is auto blueberry and the other is bluematic, the smaller one is bluematic
PICT2591.JPG

PICT2592.JPG

PICT2593.JPG

both the autos above are showing signs of heat stress, the edges of the leaves are curling up even when the plants are at a lower temp than regular cannabis plants
below is the reserva privada sour kush seeded buds, still on the 2ltr hempie till they finish and give me some seeds
PICT2598.JPG

as you can see by the picture below, their are no pistils left so hoping its full of seeds, i can feel the seeds when i squeeze the bud slightly,
PICT2599.JPG

below is ak47 cross uk cherry cheese in flower, this will be lolly popped as it grows more, so far any branches are less than 2 inches so hoping i dont need to prune to much, i will be putting pollen on some of the buds in this as i want to keep this strain
PICT2601.JPG

PICT2602.JPG

below is an nl x bb these are all in flower now after vegging under glr,
PICT2604.JPG

below is 1 of the afgan skunk clones, these have grown like crazy under glr, they are only a couple of weeks old so clearly glr is working wonders with this strain
PICT2607.JPG

below is the other agan skunk, now both of these clones where taken from the same point on the mother plant, just opposite each other, now the bigger plant has been fed the fish tank water and bpn, the smaller has had tap water and bpn, so their looks like their is more growth with the tank water
PICT2609.JPG

below is a side by side of the 2 afgan clones, both clones where the same size at the start and both where the same size when i put them in the bigger pots, but all i changed was the water

below is sour kush clone

below is group shot in flower room

below we have the seeds i planted, from the left their is sleestack cross skunk, then the next 2 are both big bud#2 and the last one you will see the strain in the next pic

i have also got a blue mystic sprouting as well, most of these will be used as hempies while im doing my scrog, so ill have something to harvest while i give the scrog a nice long veg.
below is the cupboard where i start my seedlings and clones, all bulbs are cfls and this keeps the nodes close and stops them stretching when i put them under the hps

Wow great plants Bro :thumb:

So I'm here today because my pal Alaskan1 told me to come to you for this question I have, The question is, would one 26watt cfl be enough light for an 11inch plant with the inner bushing already starting to come in? In a DIY grow op(inside a dresserdroor)

Post on the thread Bro, it will be most appreciated :420:

@miwa do you have any superthrive? i have to get some myself, but thats the anti shock stuff, i hope BPN finds an appropriate compound to match this stuff.

24/0? the more i learn my friend, the more i realise that 24/0 should be reserved for a very select few strains that seem to lke it, for everything else i wouldnt go more than 18/6 save yourself some electric and let that plant have some beautiful healing sleep ;)

Yep ...got superthrive..only use it on plants in veg stage...i have my lights on 24/0 because my plants are being revegged..once they are in veg stage i will put them on another lighting schedual ...probably the GLR sche...good idea to use a air stone in hempy grow..

thanks for all the kind comments,

with the cfls and one plant, id go with 2 cfls making sure their the 6500k or 6400kelvin for veg, these are the white/blue looking light when its on, then for flower you want the normal 2700kelvin cfls these are the ones you use around the home and give off an orangey glow to them,

but for your plant id say 2 bulbs would be the best option, i start around 10plants under just 3 cfls all 30watt 6500k, these keep the seedlings and clones short and stops any stretching, then once they are 5 or 6 inches i move them under the hps, but if i was growing again under just cfls then id use 2 cfls per plant, the light penetration is not very good and if you hold your hand touching the bulb then slowly move it away you will see that the light drops by loads after just a few inches, so i would have 2 bulbs and have them above the plant but have them so their shining on either side of the plant, this should keep your plant very happy indeed.
cfls will keep the nodes very close, its why is still use cfls to start my plants, when i start seeds under my dual spec hps which is suppose to contain enough blue spectrum to stop stretching, how ever they stretch like crazy under the hps, it might be due to how far the bulb is away from the plants at around 1ft, with the cfls i can have these as close as an inch or 2 from the plant,

so id use 2 cfls then make sure your reflecting as much light back to the plants as possible, cfls the spiral type give more light off the side of the bulb than the ends, so you need to mount them so the side of the bulb is facing the plant and not just hanging above it, then make a reflector to go over the cfl to stop it shining up in the air, mylar or white card would be ideal for this, then make sure the walls are white or use mylar to reflect as much light back as possible, if you have only got the one plant then id make something so the walls at the side of the plant are as close to the plant as possible, doing this will reflect the most light back to the plant as cfls lose the light very quick after more than a few inches,

hope thats some help to you

Plants looking good DP...and stop squeezing the buds looking for seeds...every time you touch a flowering bud you take off trics...i'll know for sure tomorrow if those are balls on my plant...thats a clone off one of my females..i posted a pic of those balls unfolding on one of my other plants when they were revegging...i'll see if i can find it..my outside plants got huge colas...this time next month all my plants except the bush..will be in the drying room...i'm already almost finish setting up the grow rm ..i'm going to do all water this time..DWCs and 4L Hempies...last winter i was at my other house and was using closets to grow in..this year i'm going to stay here and use one of the extra bed rms..i got all the furniture out...i'm going to set up panels just to contain the light..i can re-arrange them if i need more room..the bed-rm is 10' x10'...lot of room..i'm even going to put this Auto in DWC...if i ever get it growing..been messing with clones so much i almost forgot how to do seeds..good job on your grow...i took a look at that purple plant you were talking about...i think next summer i will grow all purple...stay focus...:goodjob::thumb:

Wow DP you've been so busy you've not checked in on my journal......or maybe your just getting so high with all that killer dope that you forgot. Anyways can't wait to see the DWC, I'm anxiously waiting in anticipation! :) my plants are now 4 days into flower and already I'm seeing pistils shooting out everywhere, just gave her first flowering nutes yesterday. Don't be a stranger.... can't wait til my little seedlings pop through the soil. Hope all is well, cheers.....Grogr33n

hey gro green im on my way over, not been on here in a few days and it takes ages getting caught up.

i got no concerns with touching the buds mate, the buds im touching are making seeds and thats it, the rest of the plant has been harvested so these buds are way past that point, im just trying to figure out when the seeds are ready so i can harvest and put another hempie in its place, i dont want to pull the buds to early in case the seeds are not ready, but they cant be far off,

looking great don! nice diy stuff, im working on a secret project hehe:thumb: i am creating a new system today and knowing you like the 2 liter hempys and such i got to thinking this system will be something you might flip for its a vertical/hempy passive or recirculating coco or hydroton/pearlite/vermiculite modular system you can have 1 to an unlimited number of plants in, i dreamt up this morning im almost done with the build i think its gonna be awesome, im gonna post the pics and or video up later tonight,

ive been thinking of something else as well, say i put 3 or 4 thin tubes in each pot and sealed the bottom of each tube and drilled holes at different levels and covered with some find netting, then these could be glued or placed in the pots then the pots filled with compost, then when the plants are big enough these tubes could be filled with water/nutrient mix and this would water all the pot from the bottom up, but then once the soil has taken all the water out these tubes then this only leaves air in the tubes, so im wondering if this will get more oxygen to the roots and if it would boost the plants or not, in theory it would allow me to water the whole pot and i would know its all been watered as the holes would be drilled at different places in the tube, so i could fill these tubes with water until the pot was well watered, then once the tubes have drained all the water out all that will be left is a tube running from the bottom of the pot to the top with holes at different levels, now as their is no water left in these tubes would this then supliment the roots with oxygen, plus some roots would more than likely grow through the fine net and into the tubes, then when i watered these roots in the tubes would be getting the nutrient quicker than they would out the soil, so im wondering if this could boost the growth of the plants and improve nutrient uptake and oxygen uptake for the roots, it would get more air into the soil

Ive been mulling this idea over and i think i have worked it out and rounded down to the smallest common denominator...you know me i like to make it simple ;)

when you pot your plant in the soil/vermi/perlite e.t.c, impale the soil with a half dozen pencils or garden canes or whatever and leave them there, occasionally rotating. after a couple of waterings and especially when the roots have grown round them to bind the soil you can water the plant as usual, then wait for the soil to settle back down so its not loose...then just unscrew the pencils and leave them out....put them back on once per day and twirl them to prevent the roots backfilling the holes, and put them back in next time you water ad infinitum...

whatcha think? air holes dealt with =D

Edit: oh i forgot to mention...this will allow you to drown them to make sure you have watered everything as the extra air will speed up the drying proccess.

whats the natural cycle? do the pods open and seeds fall out or do the buds themselves fall of in nature to act as a compost bed for the seeds e.t.c?

Hey guys!

If I could jump in here...

The more I observe the behavior of most flowering cannabis, (Indicas in my case) the more I am convinced that they are designed to actually snap their branches at some point so that the Colas can get closer to the ground. If the plants are on the dry side, the impact could shake a bunch of seeds loose in the process.

I am constantly having to stake and tie up many of the brances on my various strains to prop them up. I honestly don't see how they would naturally make it to harvest on their own without snapping under their own weight. I've had several snaps this season since I haven't had as much time to stay up on the whole staking and tying routine.

If they get a good soaking rain before harvest, then a good majority of the branches will snap off at the base, putting the bigger colas on the ground pointing down. ;)

I'm convinced that this is an evolved strategy on the part of the plant, to get its seeds scattered as far away from the mother plant as possible. The longer the branches that break, the further out the top colas with the most seeds will land.

im interested BID, cant wait to see the new set up and see how it works.

chances are the seeds would fall out the buds like any other plant, if you look at most plants they either have the seeds fall out or blow out and carried by wind, or with fruit and veg the fruit and veg falls off or gets eaten and the seeds get growing where they land, and if that means coming out a birds ass first then so be it, but this is my first time crossing cannabis so not sure how it disperses its seeds, im not sure if they would be eaten in the wild or just fall out the plant at end of the season,

possibly as mentioned the buds fall on the floor and act as some sort of feeding when they rot into the ground, or the seeds could fall out when the wind blows, what i am noticing more and more now is the seed pods starting to split at the seems, their is a clear white split up the side of each seed pod, so to me id think these seed pods would split open and the seed falls out, ill find out one way or the other, i got 3 fat buds well seeded, and if i had no bud to smoke id harvest these as their really fat and solid, but their full of seeds so chances are it wont get smoked, but if i see seeds falling out then ill harvest, till i do ill leave them as they are as i want the seeds viable and ripe before i cut the stems

Them Anenome s are mad!! Theyre like an octopus in a way, but how do they eat/digest the animals?? Do they have mouth parts and a stomach or do they just break it down and spit it out? Weird and scary!!! One reason i dont trust the OCEAN!! lol..

first few pictures are the harvest from the afgan skunk 2ltr dwc hempy with no air stone,

Hey Don.p. Epic journal man. Have you ever done a word count on your posts? 420's gonna need a new server to store all the information you post around here!

They do indeed have a mouth, not sure how their digestion system works, but if I'm not mistaken they consume their food take what they want/need from it then they spit out the remainder and it looks like they are pooping out of their mouth. So I think their mouth is also their ass. I imagine it has some form of a digestive system b cuz they do actually grow if you feed them on a regular basis.
The ocean is a big scary place, I went scuba diving in Costa Rica and it was an adrenaline rush to say the least, I'm so used to them being in my domain (tank) was a little weird to be in their world. The sharks were certainly intimidating, almost pooped a little
