DocBud's Next Medical Grow

I say on your other thread that someone had asked about your choice of white plastic instead of mylar and I had come to the same conclusion however I was going to use flat white paint is there a reason you went with plastic instead of paint?

thank you
are you using 1.5 gal buckets for 12/12 from seed hight might be an issue in my first room.

You should start them in small cups, like a 16oz solo cup. You can sex them in the cup, then transplant to 10litre/2gallon buckets.

I've read that white works better for reflecting light. My old grow room was painted. This one is such that hanging plastic made more sense, due to covering windows, etc. You'll be just fine with flat white paint.

Morning Doc! I'd like your take on this city water report, is TDS the same as TA?

Specific Conductance 133
TDS 85 ppm
Hardness 47.8 ppm avg.
Sodium 4.5 ppm avg.
Calcium 15.9 ppm
Magnesium 3.4 ppm

Thank you!

Your water is nearly RO. Do you live in the mountains?

You'll have to add Cal/Mag to this water in hydro.

If you're in soil, I'd mix it up to be quite acidic....peat based, lots of organic material, etc. Then add Dolomite for the Cal-mag source. Or, you can add CalMag to your water in soil too....

I wish I had your water.

Wow Doc,

My water numbers aren't close to those. Are they better or worse?

Specific conductance 506
TDS 278
total hardness 144
Sodium 38
Calcium 112
Magnesium 32

ph 8.5-8.7
sorry about the pic that's the best i could do to copy it

Your water looks to be ideal.

Total Alkalinity 52

that's the magic number, bro. You're gold.

In 3 gallons of soil, don't waste your time by pHing.....just water the damn plants. I'd kill to have your water. (not really....unless you mean killing spider mites....I'd kill them for your water.)

My water is similar to these numbers and after I had confirmed this fact, I stopped ph'ing, stopped considering the water and just pour it on. Oh with PPM as low as this on regular water, I find that mag(def) is really easy. And I suggest diotomatious(sp) Earth to add the cal... That way you are fighting the good fight in soil killing everything that gets in your way, and adding the necessary cal. Depending on your nutes, I like EarthJuice, you will have major buffers in the nute-mix against ph problems in soil.

:high-five:

You could get a Mag def with this water....for sure. But if you put your soil together properly it won't be a problem.

Organic matter tends to be acidic. Humates, Humic acid....ditto. Balance that out with dolomite and you know have your magnesium AND a great buffer to boot.

In proper soil, there should be no Calmag issues with this water.

Of course, plants may not be aware of this theory, and so if they go rogue and start showing def's.....a bit of epsom salt will fix 'em.

BTW, I add my micronute mix a couple, three times a month, along with Epsom salts.

I would love your assessment of our water here in NoCo. Your the man when it comes to water. Any ideas on improving it? Seems that it is better/worse than bottled water! The pH out of my tap is 6.4 always.

Thanks Doc,

Might be good for growing, but the water tastes like crap lately. Usually every winter it tastes worse. Even smells like chemicals lately.
Grew up in the same area as i am now, and the water back when, was the best tasting water ever.
Now i'm a bottle and jug man for drinking.

You should see a movie called "Gasland"

Doc this is on behalf of another grower, it's not mine. But I'm curious how you could tell all that? And can you tell what the TA is from those numbers?

Thanks again!

Hey Doc, I'm the other grower, and wanted to thank you for the info on my tap water. I was going to post to you tonight, but BlueDog got to it first. Not in the mountains, in the valley. BD says, I should read your journals and other info, and I will. Thanks again.:thankyou:

The question had a picture attached to it....the picture listed the TA as being 52, I think. Simple as that!

On Edit: I'm more than a bit stoned and realized that you're talking about YOUR water.....
alkalinity as CaCo3 is TA.

Doc,

Thank you first and foremost. I was pretty sure that the CaCo3 was my TA just wanted to verify that. I could think of no one better. I really applaud your tech aspect to growing. You flip tradition on it's head.

With that being said, I do add add some powdered epsom and azomite at day 10 and day 35 to FFOF w/ 25% perlite in #20 pots. Is there something else in your experience that might be a better fit? I am a traditionalist and am using House&Garden Soil A/B @ 1/2 the recommended rate of 50ml along with some Snowstorm, Sweet, Bio-Bud, and SNS 604b. The SNS claims humic acids, sea kelp, and plant oils. No NPK on that particular product. PPM at peak development(flower) is at most 750.

Thanks man. I do have a huge amount of respect for you and your style.

Subs got some amazing stuff out there, your example being one of the better that I have seen. Good work.

Wow, thanks for the kind words!

I've used Sweet, Snowstorm and SNS....great products.
I think you've got it covered....good sources of micro's....very nice.

I think the only thing you might experiment with is adding some compost tea and guano...get a good micro herd going. It will enhance the flavors.
