Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Ya Bulldog, but the idea is to keep as many leaves on the plant as long as possible. We all remove leaves throughout the grow as part of the pruning process but you have to resist the temptation to strip all the upper fans off. This time round i held off taking off many fans and tried to fold under move etc. rather than just stripping them all off. The lower buds have developed real nice despite leaving most of the fans on!I still removed the odd one but mostly left them alone. Cheers eh.

The plants tell you which ones they want off.....they start to yellow earlier.

Here is a study, showing how the sugar pathway is off and scaffolding pathway is on when shadowing occurs with other literature agreeing. I would think one way to increase brix would be to simply decrease the amount of shadowing, especially during mid to later stages. This doesnt have to be more umol (quantity) of light but quality and directionality is more important to eliminating shadows.

You would have to conclude that shorter, fatter plants which comes from adequate blue and PAR would be 'sweeter' than stretchy, skinny.

That's why I use a light mover. Great stuff! Keep it coming!

Doc, question on your washing method. Actually two. How much 29% peroxide would you mix in 5 gal water? Can you do a wash then trim down to final nugs to dry on a rack? I know you suggest leaving sugar and buds on the stem and hanging to dry .

Thank you

I also use a light mover for a number a reasons. If you dont use a mover and have a setup that can utilize a mover, your missing out. For the $ and watt vs yield and quality, there is few things in my room that are more valuable. I went from 1000's to 600's only using ~ 23w mover and less heat and intensity stress.

I don't know how much of the 29% I'd use....never done it. Perhaps there is a conversion table on the web somewhere?

You can wash before or after a trim. I remove large fans, anything yellow or crispy, and really large sugar leaves, and keep everything else intact. I like lots of leaf on the buds when they dry. I'll manicure it off for some folks, but I like those leaves for rolling joints. I save all the washed, rinsed, manicured sugar leaf and it makes amazing joints.

I wouldn't handle them wet, after a wash. If you wanted to final trim first and then wash, that would work, but then all your trim isn't washed unless you wash that as well.

Add 1oz 29% hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) to 9oz water (H2O) ...this will give you 10oz of 2.9%, almost 3%, hydrogen peroxide

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

In my quest for the stickiest, best tasting weed possible, I'm experimenting with different forms of nitrogen and changing the ionic balance in the soil.

Nitrates are readily available to the plant, but they also leach out of the soil easily with watering. Ammoniacal nitrogen (NH4) is different. It has a positive charge, whereas the nitrate (NO3) has a negative charge. Cation is positive, Anion is negative.

NH4 is captured by particles in the soil and are stored there until the roots and mycorrhizae on the roots break them loose and feed them to the plant.

When you feed with strongly cationic forms of nitrogen, like Ammonium sulfate or ammonium phosphate, you get these cations and it stimulates reproductive growth from the plant.

The question is when to add this?

So, I added at the onset of bloom on these plants and immediately noticed more triches than I'd ever seen before, right off the bat.

At the same time, I've also noticed that the buds aren't swelling as much as usual for these strains. So I'm hoping to change that by getting the soil back into the anionic range a bit, by feeding with Calcium Nitrate, which is rather unique.

Calcium is a very powerful cation, which will dislodge the NH4 and also boost calcium in the plants. The nitrate is readily available to the plant as well. This will very slightly favor reproductive growth and should bulk up the flowers a bit.
Nitrogen is one of the most tricky nutrients to get just right. Too little or chem locked and your plant is sick. Too much and you can get toxicity. N forms also play a huge role as Doc points out. Im just going to throw this paper out and see what the group thinks... This is a well known issue with plants and ecosystems, i would think even more important because people smoke MJ and ammonia is bad juju smoked. Im not sure if MJ is ammonia sensitive but my guess is its not which means that ammonia can build without grower noticing in the plant which makes it even more of an issue.

NH4+ toxicity in higher plants: a critical review

Why are you doing this? Doesnt the H2O2 and the physical washing action strip resins? Sorry if im repeating questions but i dont seem to be able to get anywhere with the search function.

A member asked how to make 3% H2O2 from 29% .. :)
There is a bud washing thread..see Doc Buds posts. Great stuff

Some pics. The purple cadillac is acting like it's ready to be harvested. It's on week ten.....gonna let it go one more week I think. There's some resin there.

Also the Champagne is looking good but I've got something going on with it. Careful searching revealed nothing, till I saw my helper unwittingly contaminate the water tank.....now I've got a lot of Algae in my water tank and i think that might be what is giving it the trouble. I should get that cleared up tonite. Hopefully, the plant recovers and finishes properly.

Also, some pics of OG harvest 3 days after wash. I gave out a sample to someone and now the whole crop is spoken for. High Brix=good, cheap, effective advertising.

Soil Mix:

ProMix HP
Worm Castings
HIgh Brix amendment

Lot's of microbial products, biochar, humic acids, fishy ferts and groovy foliar sprays, all formulated by a lab for my specific soil.
Is there any reason why one couldnt accomplish the same results only using hydro vs soil?

The plants look amazing as frickin always!!!!!!

Q? for ya DOC.

i just put 2 of my autos outdoors, is it ok to add cypress mulch to the top to help with water retention? or will it effect it negatively??
