Consider that your insurance company will likely deny your claim if you are growing weed on-premises.
agreed.legally they can't, but you have to stay within the legal 4 plant limit and inform them of your activities.
I knew some of this and am still so impressed by your resolve.
So here we are, 3 days ago, in “The Palazzio”, a made-up word for the slightly newer, easy-access 5x5. The one where the SIP totes have soft pots instead of just 'cloth long underwear' like in the other SIPs in The Burn Unit. The plants sitting in the back on the aluminum scaffold bench will change in the pics as they are moms, so don’t get attached, we’re gonna focus on the SIP plants, which, handily have been labelled for you.
OG Ultraviolet is a stumpy, thick but short-limbed, 80% Indica cross between Face Off OG and Purple Indica, a popular “Pacific NW” strain (Washington State claims it, we'll let'm have it... but 'some say' it's really from the Pacific SW, AKA The Wet Coast, AKA frikken heaven on earth. C'mon, Canada people. PS Some People are wrong) Anyway, I'm a sucker for local weed.
Runtz. One of 2020's big sellers. Even the stalks of seedlings smell like candy. AnotherWASPY suburbaniteIndica hybrid designed to fouck you up, bad. Narcotic. Bring it.
Diatribe Alert
I've lived almost my entire adult life in Canada's Green Triangle, and when I wasn't there I was in The Netherlands so it wasn't as though weed was missing from the culture. However, I have only smoked a few times over a 3-4 day period since I came back from Europe... in 2012! I came back because my health was extremely poor, Some days I was so dizzy I couldn't stand at all. The flight(s) home just about ended me. Whenever I fly I can never remember the 3 days afterward, but the stories don't sound good. For reals. Since 2005 I'd been treated for MS, an MS diagnosis often takes years and immediate treatment is important so... however, we couldn't find enough sclerosis to pound the last nail home. Well, turns out, 4 years ago it was discovered to be major issues with my inner ear, the system that tells your brain where down and up are. It's bad, really bad. I have had bad migraines since childhood. Sometimes they are so bad... you just know you're not gonna be the same after this one, and the Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist tells me he has seen this in people who get uber-migraines, next-level types, which I get and for the last few years they have lasted 2-5 days at a time. Anyway, that's the diagnosis. Usually, I just have to be sedated when these events take place because eventually I just want to jump out a window. You would too, trust me. I have ridiculously high pain tolerance, can and have dealt with major injuries in the mountains etc., and got myself out but this is another thing. Anyway, he says those migraines have caused trauma to both inner ear systems. I'm completely deaf in one ear and now expected to lose the other. I have lost both before and one came back, it was terrifying. Very lonely. Anyway, gotta learn to sign apparently. Yeah but who am I gonna 'talk' to? Anyway, one of my immed. issues is that I get a kind of 'insta-vertigo' I call it. I'm feeling normal, then a split second later I am as dizzy as you've ever been, like put your arms out spin around in place 20 times as fast as you can then, stop. That's how dizzy, but suddenly, instantly, without warning. So, I fall down. More like throw myself across the room because my brain thinks left is down and up is right. I've had two broken bones requiring surgical repair, and I'm afraid to count the concussions. Stitches, knocked unconscious.... on and bloody on. In someone whose professional life used to be guiding people through hazardous environments, climbing guide, caving, kayak, boats, yachts, etc., aaaaarrrrggghh. I used to be so proud never to get sea sick regardless conditions or length of time. Now I'm seasick laying in bed. All. the. time. It takes two hours of laying still in bed to recover from the nausea caused by 15 minutes of 'normal activity' like watering the garden (outside) I've been doing physio for years on this, before diagnosis, way before because I thought it just might be the problem. You try to reprogram your brain but it is not very effective for people over 30 and I'm in my 40's. I still do it every day, it might save me a broken arm here and there, or worse.
Okay so that's out of my system. It's just such an impediment that it affects everything so I feel the need to share or otherwise people will make their own conclusions, it's only natural. Thank you for letting me get that out. Its why I hesitate to journal because I may, no doubt will, at some point have to stop for a while. It's a lot more work than just sniping from the peanut gallery. Now that, that I shall do until my dying day, you may be assured.
Alright, we'll talk about cannabis cultivation next, promise.
Awesome post RD@Rexer and @bluter thank you for calling me out on the house insurance issue. You are absolutely right, if handled properly as you describe it shouldn’t be an issue. I forget how large a contingent we Canuck are here, and felt it best to er on the side of great caution in deference to worldwide readership. I still have my doubts, I expect the insurance industry to take a right bollocking over the next decade and a company with a radically degraded balance sheet just might be willing to go to the courts to delay payouts. Keep a weather eye mateys for it’s a fell wind does blow.
However, I have had this convo with my insurer and was assured the policy covers. I even had a “leccy” (electrician) over (note to readers standing upside down in Oceania right now, we still call radio operators “Sparkies”, if we can find one, and so did you at one point) to give me a bill of good health I can wave around if issues arise. I also made sure that my growing was totally legal, and this brings up another important topic.
Canadians are limited to grow only 4 plants, whatever their growth state. Sorta. You see it is possible, even easy, through Health Canada, to apply for special exemption for medical purposes and have that limit easily and radically enlarged.
Something of a cottage industry has popped up to meet this need as well. There are organizations that for a few shekels will have a doctor speak with you on the phone to ok your application and mild headaches or a buzzy feeling in your elbow when you swing a 9 iron will get you in the door, then their experts file the paperwork on your behalf. I’d heard ‘some people say’ juicing fresh bud each morning like wheatgrass was good for you, which I do have experience with, and mentioned that this would require quite a heavy rolling harvest. “Ok, no problem” Really?! Turns out, yeah really. I was approved for near as makes no difference almost a triple digit plant count. When accepted it then also becomes possible for you to become the registered grower for one other approved person, taking on whatever plant count they are allowed.
This was very, very easy everyone. It’s obviously designed to apply to virtually everyone and past canna crimes are not barring successful applications from what I can tell.
So, everything you see growing in my journal is fully legit, on the up and up, if you will.
And I do hope you will! Because look who spent all the Canadian Tire money he’s won playing Yeuker…
Had to buy a whole new freezer for this years expected number grape harvest. That and my fresh-frozen Runtz/Skittles… all with my I’ll-gotten filthy Canadian Tire lucre. (Fist pump!)
Awesome post RD
But...you forgot the Cherry on Top.
The four recreational plants are on top of your medical plant count.
I got my permit for indoors.
So medical on the inside.
The four recreational ones, outside. 2 of which are in 50 gallon containers.
Next year all 4 outdoor will be in 50 gallon containers.
Med license is 100% Federal, and the provinces can't interfere. It's been challenged in both Quebec and Saskatchewan. They can only limit sight and smell for cultivation for medical.depends on your med licence. most are worded so that it is only the licence amount that is legal. the extra 4 would put you in illegal territory. it's not a federal jurisdiction, it depends entirely on your provincial licensing, and local bylaw.
no...it's 100% Federal- Health Canada to be specific. I've had mine for several years now, I've always assumed you had yours?licencing for indoor med is granted through the province,
You are correct, municipalities can place limits on sight and smell, so can provinces and even the Federal government has to some limits.who have to follow the federal guidelines. outdoor in canada is dependent on your local bylaw, and is always illegal in most cases, unless your municipality has granted you the privilege.
there used to be, but they phased it out.do be careful. there are some size restrictions in canada as well. i will check but you probably still have a 2 meter restriction, and it can't be visible over fences to any neighbours, or visible from the street.
As long as I have my medical permit, or a certified true copy- I can carry 150g no problem. Smoking in public depends on local rules (same with vaping).most folk don't know the law in canada. you can still be charged with possession if you are carrying your own in most provinces. federally transport is limited to 30 grams, but the provinces have the option to opt out, and most have.
If only 1 adult is in the vehicle, yup, you can be charged. But if I have my 150g, and bought my wife an ounce, and had the receipt and my medical permit I could. So long as the medical cannabis, is in fact what I grew from medically sourced seeds/clones (in other words, if bought at a recreational store, it stays recreational under the laws). Again, this goes back to the feds separating the medical from the recreational laws. It makes paperwork a nuisance, but not impossible.police often stake out dispensaries here. if you visit one and get pulled over, you need to produce the receipt, and show it is 30g or under, or you get charged and fined. if you are carrying your own, it has to be under 30g, and the cops may still choose to charge you on their discretion.
Couldn't speak outside my experience. Mine is fully aware of my permit and growing. Never had an inspection, just told to make sure that everything is legitimate, up to code, and it's covered.i should add, most insurance companies are going to require an inspection and extra coverage for any grow over 4 plants.

The separation of the medical and recreational were done intentionally. It mainly screws us, but I spoke and asked Health Canada.
My wife smokes recreational. The recreational plants are hers, and for sharing.
I only have 3 indoor medical plants going. Not even close to my limit.

Thanks, guys, very informative and helpful. I urge anyone who wishes to have or already has, plants growing on property they own or lease (with landlord approval) to make the small investment in specialized legal counsel avail. in your area.
The most common and apt descriptor of the criminal and other legal codes is "complex". Lawyers who specialize in cannabis will make you feel like a legal cannabis specialist just by talking to you for 30 minutes, it's a great feeling. If you have concerns, or even a charge, please, don't throw your hands up, say "F%$# the Man" and stroll on. I did that 25 years ago and they spent 100'k$$ looking for me in this:
and found me here, in Desolation Sound
while I was at work guiding clients on a 7 day deep wilderness trip doing this, at pretty much this spot (that's not me)
They just plucked me and my kayak out of the water and put me in the brig. Leaving my clients with only one guide, my boss. This happened because when I was in my twenties I was a jackass. Take the law seriously and it will take you seriously is what I tell my kids, but you're not kids and don't need to be told. But I care about you mooks and want the best for you so I go on about these things.
Well, that's the weird part. Honestly, they were only out for me because I hadn't paid my fine and a warrant was issued. I guess the lads figured good excuse to go cruise the Sound and terrorize the hippies. Dead serious. They plucked me straight from nirvana, not another human for miles and miles and miles, at work. Oh man did I feel awful, so crushed and stupid. Anyway, these screws chucked me in the ship's brig (def. cool I can say I've actually been in a real brig) and ran 35kn for a very long day into Campbell River where I was hosted overnight by Her Majesty, saw a JP in the morning, paid the damn fine and made my way back home, boatless, to face the music.
Oh-ho were people pissed. Nobody had seen that boat up close around there before and it sounded like they stopped in every nook and god-pocket they could to shake a tree and see if I fell out. I was literally just a dude picked up with a tiny-wee bud on him ages before who flaked on the fine. How the hell did they even know I was in the middle of the dead-wilderness has never been answered. Still bugs me. Took ages to placate all my buddies and fellow lokies who understandably couldn't believe my story, but, there it is. If I had more juice for you, I'd squeeze like hell, but, that's.... it, really.
I have had an exceptionally strange relationship with law enforcement in my life. It definitely seems like somehow, someplace, someone painted a big ol target on my back, which I know how that sounds but, really, it's been weird. I've never been to prison, just held overnight to see the judge, that's it, thank goodness. I've known some proper crims, but c'mon, look where I was living, at and beyond the very periphery of civilization itself. Sherrif John Brown thinks everyone there is hiding from him so as to justify his power to rob us of our liberty with only a 40% chance that something illegal has taken place. That's the definition of "Just cause". 40%. So he goes where he reckons the pickings are good and hunts with buckshot. But, things change, are changing, and we change. Even the police, can change.
Oh fer fahhcksake... I can't read that post, and I wrote it. Full disclosure, first sentence is: "... I have anxiety."@bluter I'm having anxiety. I'll post a pic in a few when phone's charged but measured vert. space for plant from soil top to light raised to max is 4"5'. Def. a penalty to this grow style, about 6 inches, and I think my design dealt with it pretty effectively, but still. Plants are on a path for quad, could top them now for 8. Or I could tip them over or I have a static scrog I could rig. Growth is.... good. Whaddya think of 4'5"?
