Derek910's 2021 Multiple Strain Grow

Yeah I came up with the idea of using the little shelves when I did my first grow. I also used an oil pan to catch the water so I didn't have to empty it every time I watered, but that doesn't work in this setup so I just use aluminum turkey pans to catch the water, then dump them with each watering. I have two of those tower fans in the tent. One at each end. They work great, I just wished they would come back on when the power comes back on if there is a power outage. Right now I have to go in there and turn them back on and also turn them to oscillate. I need to get a battery backup for them so that doesn't happen.
I bought the same fan you have above the canopy in the corner. What a great fan.

Flower Day 9, Grow Day 86

They have been flushed and given new nutrients for flowering. I lowered the lights down to 18" and they seem to be loving it. They are starting to push out trichomes as well. Can't wait for the weight to start packing on now!!!

Damn man they look pretty damn big already for how long you've had them in budding. WOW. The health of your plants is what stands out to me every time you post. They're purely glorious specimens, man, really impressive job. I can't WAIT to see how sweet those buds get. WOW.

I grabbed a Honeywell Turbo Vortex for under my canopy today. On sale for $23! Thanks for the inspiration, I saw yours and realized it's the quintessential fan for under your canopy. I just hooked mine up (don't need it yet) to test it and damn does that thing blow some air. By far the best fan I've come across for under canopy.

Flower Day 17, Grow Day 94

The buds are starting to fatten up and are also starting to push out the terpenes. I love opening the tent to get that whiff of all four strains. Looks like the Star Doggie is getting ready to start the turn to purple. Other plants are happy and healthy.

Goddamn those buds look sweet as hell. Yeah, isn't it funny the smells you get from the multiple strain grow? I have four budding strains in my auto tent and the mix of odors is super cool. Also, do you notice, since we have the same fan up top and I assume you keep yours oscillating, that if you sit there a few minutes the smell will change as the fan oscillates and you'll get whiffs of the specific strains rather than just a mix of all of them? That's what I'm experiencing at least, and I fricking love it. Do you have any thoughts on those yellowing leaves? Nitrogen? (Not that it appears to be any major concern or anything, just curious)

Definitely love the smells of all of these strains. I think the Gelato is my favorite out of these for smell. Not sure on the Phantom OG yet because this is my first run of it. The yelowing is a combination of low N and probably Cal/Mag as well. I flushed the plants and then after the pots dried I fed them the new nutrients for this stage of flower. Then for two waterings I just gave them plain water. So it's probably due to all of the above. Since it's low on the plant I'm not worried about it. I'm seeing Cal/Mag deficiencies on the Phantom OG and White Widow, but it's really mild and starting to subside since I've been addding Cal/Mag again. Won't skimp on the Cal/Mag again. I ran out and that's why they didn't get it for two waterings.

Yes, I have found it actually a little surprising how often I am using the CalMag on this photo grow versus my first one. One reason is I am more educated now. But the other and main reason is that the first grow was under my blurples. This grow is my first with a high powered, professional light that puts out a ton. I have a dimmer but I like to run it at 100% and adjust by changing the height. The result under a high powered, "real" LED in terms of Calcium and Magnesium needs of the plant seem to be that they need more under the more powerful light. I guess they use it up more quickly under a more powerful light? That seems to be the case in my auto tent as well. Ever since I added the quantum board to the blurples, the light intensity went up a million percent and the needs of the plants seem to have changed. They are definitely using water more quickly. And I am doing CalMag plus Iron (Humboldt's Secret) on the autos every third watering. Do you find that the more light the plants are getting, the quicker they use up the Calcium and Magnesium?

I never had to worry about adding Cal/Mag until I got the higher powered LEDs just like you. The ones I started with were cheap blurple LEDs. So it's pretty safe to say that the lights cause it somehow.

Yup. Our histories are similar. Interesting. I guess a lot of us begin with cheap blurples and quickly realize the need to upgrade our lights. Lol.

Chugging right along I see! Buds are looking good sized already!

I noticed the yellowing as well in amongst the canopy. I seen you said you do a feed, water, water schedule. Maybe try a feed, feed, water schedule instead and I'm sure you will see a big improvement. There was no yellow in your last update, I'd say they're hungry.

Careful to not add too much cal/mag supplement though as calcium has the ability to lock out quite a few different nutrients. Most times you only really need calmag in flower or if you're using RO water.

Flower Day 23, Grow Day 100

After adding Cal/Mag and the issue not fixing itself I figured it had to be water ph and come to find out my ph meter was off. After I recalibrated it my water was coming out at 6.08. Which explains what I'm seeing on the plants. Got the ph up to 6.38 when I watered them today and the yellowing is slowly turning back to green. Hopefully in the next few days all the yellow will be gone. I wish I would have checked it sooner, but you live and you learn. The Star Doggie's purple genetics are starting to show so can't wait for that! All buds are still putting on weight and the smell is getting stronger everyday along with more trichomes show up!! Got about 40 more days give or take a few and I cannot wait!!!

So do you have an answer as to whether you like to defoliate before flowering yet?

So do you have an answer as to whether you like to defoliate before flowering yet?
Yes because it reduced what I had to cut away after they have been flipped. I doubt I'll use the plant stakes this way again because it is a bitch trying to water around them. I think I'll go back to SCROG, but I'm going to build a frame out of PVC for my next run. Probably make it so I can add another net if I need to also.

Flower Day 32, Grow Day 109

They are smelling so good! I can’t get the yellowing to go away though. They were flushed a few days ago and they were fed yesterday. Just going to ride it out. Caught and killed a moth yesterday. Hopefully it didn’t lay any eggs. They should really start packing on weight over these next 4 weeks or so.

Damn, yellowing or not those buds look sweet as hell. Loving the plant on the far left. I guess you've tried CalMag and tried flushing already for that yellowing? Maybe some N?

I don't think it's N because the yellowing is on the older upper leaves for the Gelato, Phantom OG, and White Widow which tells me it is an immobile nutrient. The Star Doggie(far left) is yellowing at the bottom which tells me it is a mobile nutrient. It's not N because I actually had some clawing on the smaller leaves of her. So that only leaves magnesium. I think the issue is multiple strains with pre-mixed nutes. I can't add a single nutrient without upping others. So I think it's just something I have to accept. It's really not that bad, but of course we always want to improve. Still going to be some fire for sure!!!

:nerd-with-glasses: start? Looks to me like they've already started lol them buds are getting fat!

You're doing great job in here Derek. Hoping you can keep the deficiencies at bay a few more weeks.

Thanks. I think they’ll be ok until the end.

Flower Day 41, Grow Day 118

All the plants are pushing out a new round of white hairs and the calyxes are starting to swell. Only a few weeks left to go!! It smells so good inside the tent. Also, the buds are starting to sag because of the weight. I've connected a few plant yo-yos for the ones that are. I'll keep adding them as the buds get heavier.
