I am going to just put them on the top of the soil of some of my girls to help the water from pooling and making dents in the dirt and I have been told that it also helps with gnats. I do not have a so called "problem" with them but do see one every other day or so and hope they will make it none.
Canna when you washed yours was it just to get the dust off or for some other reasons?????

Hi Dennise, I only washed them to get the dust off.
I have read a post recently that said the hydroton gives the gnats a place to hide. I have not had that problem. I think if you get gnats...they are going to find a place to hide no matter what you do till you get rid of them. ;-)
Edit: Let me correct myself before someone else does...I had a couple of gnats show up in my grow last year. I hung a sticky fly trap and it caught them. Never saw another. ;-)
For soil insects I use diatomaceous earth on top of the soil as a barrier, it cuts them as they move through it. I bought my diatomaceous earth from an animal feed store, do not use the type meant for pool filters. Mosquito dunks can also be used as a soil drench for fungus gnats. Sierra Natural Sciences also makes a soil drench called SNS-203 for fungus gnats and other soil insects.

Now there's a down right easy recipe.Once again for gnats, a home remedy. I would suggest it if I haven't used it with success already...
