I am going to just put them on the top of the soil of some of my girls to help the water from pooling and making dents in the dirt and I have been told that it also helps with gnats. I do not have a so called "problem" with them but do see one every other day or so and hope they will make it none.
Canna when you washed yours was it just to get the dust off or for some other reasons?????

A fully organic method of eliminating fungus gnats is Bacillus thuringiensis Israelensis or Bt-I There is a product being sold at

Knock-Out Gnats Granules - Gardens Alive!

There is a Buy 25 get 25 dollars free coupon right on the site. It is the premier product and will last you forever. At the least you can go there to see the life cycle and eliminate anything you may be doing to encourage the gnats.

Hi Dennise, I only washed them to get the dust off.
I have read a post recently that said the hydroton gives the gnats a place to hide. I have not had that problem. I think if you get gnats...they are going to find a place to hide no matter what you do till you get rid of them. ;-)

Edit: Let me correct myself before someone else does...I had a couple of gnats show up in my grow last year. I hung a sticky fly trap and it caught them. Never saw another. ;-)

Hi Canna... Did you just rinse them with water???:confused::confused::confused:

For soil insects I use diatomaceous earth on top of the soil as a barrier, it cuts them as they move through it. I bought my diatomaceous earth from an animal feed store, do not use the type meant for pool filters. Mosquito dunks can also be used as a soil drench for fungus gnats. Sierra Natural Sciences also makes a soil drench called SNS-203 for fungus gnats and other soil insects.

King I messed up...:thedoubletake: You had told me about this and I had ordered it then someone put some bad stuff about it up here and I got scared and cancelled the order then when I was looking back through my journal I realized it was you that had suggested it so was gong to talk to you about it again but they really just haven't been a problem. I got the clay things to make watering easier and someone made a comment about they helped with gnat control and thought maybe that would just be an extra benefit. Sorry I'm rambling again...
