Deep Water Culture Growing Q & A

I moved the male to isolation in order to harvest some pollen for later breeding / seed production (in addition to what I end up with in this crop). These are much better macro photos thanks to the Karl Zeiss lens:

Look at all that pollen just falling out of it....... Friggin amazing

that is a *lot* of pollen

the biggest enemy of stored pollen is moisture, so store several smaller amounts in separate containers as opposed to putting it all in one place. The pollen itself has some moisture, so too much in one place promotes mold.

Nah, the bags are flat, not stuffed. I'd flick the plant and all this pollen would rain down like a little yellow snow storm. All I had to do was give the bags a positive charge and pinch them open under the pods. After that I clipped the plant apart and dumped what was left in the pods into them, vacuum sealed them in a second mylar pouch and put them into the lab freezer.

Moisture will keep pollen from doing it's thing but won't kill it unless mold grows. I'm not going to see any of that happen in the deep freeze.

Yeah, that little plant was like a friggin porn star of pot.

If / when I decide to use it I'll order a DNA set and separate it onto a set of glass slides and then seal and freeze those. I needed a quick solution using materials on hand.

they look like males to me,sorry for your loss.but all is not lost.if you know about where the seeds came from, and if the MJ was good let the plant go ahead a do what it do.always look at it as a learning curve, and go forward.

Just a quick question... Molasses, Yes or No ???? Heard it plumps the buds up makes heavier and much stickier. Comments please befor i experiment. Thanks

Molasses is great in soil, particularly outdoors where your more expensive options are likely to run off more quickly and get wasted.

If you're growing in hydroponics, never use molasses. Yes, you'll have some guys tell you they did it, it worked fine, no problems, etc, etc. That's not typical. What usually happens is you get one errant nasty microbe in the reservoir, it gobbles down the molasses and overnight you have a full-blown slimy disaster of microbial bloom killing your plants and gunking up everything it touches. Seen "The Blob". That.

So in soil, molasses is good. In hydro, stick with something like Bud Candy.

How big is the room and wht kind of hood do you have? Also how many circultion fans do you have and is the grow in a closet, attic?

i have 2 400 lights in a small grow room(for the first time)and i started having trouble with heat.are you running co2?the reason i ask about the co2,is that you can operate at higher temps with co2.what i stared to do is open my door during daylight.the cool air in my basement helps the temp to go down

I am following Rosemans Deep Water Culture setup with the two 8 gallon res.'s. I just noticed this morning that i have a very small amout of what looks like algue...sorry cant spell... growing on my rockwool. Iv got the hydroton covered with the styrofoam bowl bottoms. What have i done and what can i do to remedy this problem befor it gets worse???

AWW man!! Let me tell ya im so aggrivated!! I have to 8 gallon res.'s and one is taking off perfectly wih no problems all 6 popped and are going strong and are getting there full dose of nutes. But my other has been trouble from the start. My drip tubes disconnected a couple times and then the first set of seed never came up so i put 6 new seed in and only 3 have come up... yesturday i noticed the algae and today i checked them and on top of the bright green algae there is a ton of thick white stuff?????? What in the world is this???? I did give them a 1/4 dose of nutes (seedling dose with gh nutes) last night. This is my first hydro grow and im just about ready to just shut my one res down and grow out my other and start two next time unless i can get it squared away and dialed in. My other doesnt really need the drip tubes anymore but ima giving them another week with them.

The simple answer is that you need to introduce less heat or more cooling.

Less heat: A smaller light would put out less heat, but less light too so that's kind of a last resort imho. If you air-cooled the hood that 600w is in you could see a lot less heat being generated. I'm a big fan of air-cooled hoods.

There's also water-cooled hoods but I've never been entirely comfortable mixing my electrical and water that close together. Air-cooling works well enough.

More Cooling: You can put something like a chiller or an air conditioner in there to fight the heat but that can get even more expensive for the electric bill (not counting the cost of buying one if you don't have an extra AC laying around.)

I would first look for ways to improve existing air flow and make sure you're not continuously cooking the same air trapped in the grow room.

Check out this video:

YouTube - hs 53 leds and lung rooms

This guy has a nice system set up with a "lung room". You can easily do the same thing with a bedroom and closet where the closet is the grow room and the bedroom is the lung room. The advantage of that system is it feeds conditioned cooler air in at the bottom and blows the hot air out the top. Since cold air wants to stay down and hot air wants to go up, you're working with the natural thermal properties.

Combine that with an air-cooled hood and you can run pretty much any sane amount of HID in a small grow room.

Hello I have a question about budding. I switched to 12/12 lighting and i was wondering how to handle my nutrients. Do I put micro, veg and bloom all at once or just bloom or 2 of the 3. Any suggestions would be nice thank you
