They are clay balls. This is Cees's 12/12 from seedling grow, after the males have been pulled it looks like. These guys can tell by the nodes, before seeing normal signs of sex, and pluck out the males right away.

I think the clay balls help trap moisture in the soil and reduce humidity, (because the grow area is so large), and it is in soil.
