Chump's First

We've had light rain, about every other day this week. What is bud rot? I picked off some brown leaves coming out of that bud I have a close up of. They looked kinda dead. Do you think it's too early to havest that plant? My Dad has already harvested one of his, but that doesn't really mean anything, other then some plants are done already right? The hairs have not quite turned all brown yet. I've been flushing that plant for more then a week now.

Bud rot is a destructive growth of mold (or fungus?) that can chew up your buds really fast. There's some info about it in the Cannabis Plant and Pest Problem Solver - Pictorial thread, and quite frankly, many other threads.

I'm not real experienced with it (and I'd like to keep it that way!), but I've seen a bit of it. I see my buds several times a day and tend to catch issues early. Removing the rotted bits is the highest priority.

Unless your areas of browning bud leaves are spreading, I'd probably credit the cool weather.

As to the harvesting question... that's up to you. Can you sustain the plants longer without causing damage? I see allot of white pistils on your babies... makes me think they have a ways to go. The real test of "are my babies done?" is best answered by a very careful examination of the trichomes. The browning of the pistils is an indicator, but the better way to answer the question is to get a magnifying device of some sort and look for amber colored trichomes. Racefan has allot better words than I could supply on his post about harvesting.... How to know when to harvest.

Cheers... and again... such beautiful babies!

It sure didn't look good. Looked like brown snot. And when I was cutting it away, it was just falling apart. So I'm pretty sure it's rot. When I went out this morning, there was (what looked like) white frost all over the brown parts. I think it may have been mold, or fungus. Now a couple of the buds look like they have a big bite taken out of them. I hope I got it all, and it dries out a little here. I probably only lost a bowl or two, knock on wood.

Here's some pics.

Here's a shot of a bud that got hit. You can still see some brown, I would have had to cut the whole bud off, to get rid of it all. It was all the way down to the stem.

Here's some nice healthy buds.

Looking good.. nice catch with the bud rot. Try to keep a fan on the buds and keep em dry from here on out to keep the rot from coming back. It happens as a result of moisture getting locked up inside and literally causing the bud to go to mush and rot. Then mold/fungus sets in on the affected area. The moisture does not necessarily need to come from external forces like rain etc.. The buds sweat from the inside and the unfortunate side to having nice big fat dense colas is that the moisture gets trapped inside and this can happen.

Best ways to help the situation would be lower the RH if possible. Keep a fan blowing across the buds to help evap any moisture collected in the buds. And of course keep them out of the rain if at all possible.

Talking to my Dad last night he was telling me that if the losses that the rot is taking are greater then the gains I can make, then I would probably be better off harvesting. So... the weather simply is not allowing me to continue with the LST. Having to move it in and out really doesnt work to well. It still got rained on when I was at work when I thought it was going to be dry that day. And it makes the whole house smell like someone's burning a big fat joint when it's indoors.

So last night, I said I'm sorry to our plant, and I said a little prayer to God thanking Him for the harvest He's provided. The LST was an amazing plant, it's at least 3 times bigger then the other 3 plants. The other 3 will be a bonus compared to the huge harvest from the LST.

Here's the pics of the LST at harvest. Sorry for the flash photography, it sucks trying to get good shots indoors. After the buds dry some I'll get some real nice pics.

Here's a pic of the bag of sticky trimmings.

And hear's the Mighty LST's stalk. Close to 1" diameter.

It was so hard to get a good pic of the detail, but the buds do not look premature, lots of brown hairs. And the big bud hanging upside down to the far left, measures from fingertip to elbow. Hopefully in the next set of pics you'll see better detail. These just show the size of the yield. Awesome for 1 plant!!!

:thankyou: thanks everyone for all their input and advice! I'll be posting pics of the other 3 plants when they finish as well!
