They nibble on your foliage and leave little tiny holes. I always have attacked them aggressively so it never got to the point were I seen spots. The most important thing is spray the leafs underside as well as the top & heavily spray the soil to kill the larva which the newborns hatch from.Bat Rastard Gnats! GRRRRRR.....
Reg, when you had the gnat problem (I think it was you recently), did you have any damage to the leaves or was it just a nuisance issue?
I've got small brown dots on some leaves that look like bug issues but I can't find anything besides a gnat here and there even closely inspecting with the loupe under/over the leaves and the soil.
Use a pair of old stockings as a screen to stop any bugs getting in your water. I'm not sure if you call them stockings in the US but they are long thin socks that ladies wear with suspender belts
Hahaha, suspender belt! When is the last time you wore stockings and garters, Canna? Wahahahaha.
I'm a tomboy.
Anyway, I do not treat my rainwater at all. I put mosquito dunks in the tanks, I have four collection tanks. I break the dunks up and only put a tiny piece in because they don't last very long and break down pretty fast. I check the pH now and then. It is always about 6.8 so nothing is needed to be done. Every now and then I see if the water has a rancid odor and if it does, I empty the tank out on the gardens and wash it out. I'll even fill the rainbarrels with tap from the hose. The chlorine/chloramine dissipates, but unfortunately the pesticides and atrazine does not dissipate. I try not to use tap if possible on indoor plants. Outside, the soil is teaming and can handle it.
