Building my growbox...

Got a nice bit of work done over the weekend.. I initially had 4 T5 strips and was going to put two on each side of my box. Since fluos don't compare to HID lights for blooming, I decided to make up for this with quantity and ordered 4 more off ebay.

I attached 4 strips to the back panel of my box :

They light up nice in the dark too

And installed the back panel back onto the frame

I got some hinges at Home Depot, threw some mylar onto the front panel and made a door of it.
When they arrived, the 4 other fixtures came onto that.

Once I get my scrubber, I need to cut a hole in the side panel to fix it in, and I'll be ready to attach the side panel, which is the last piece missing as I installed the 'roof' after taking these pics.
The hanging T5s (4 bulbs) will come on last.

I started germinating one feminized seed earlier on today that is hopefully to become my mother plant. I posted some questions in the seeds & germination section that I'd love someone to answer if you get a chance.

Hehe Erk202..

speaking of fire though, I was thinking of getting some chicken wire or similar to prevent the plants from getting -too- close to the T5s..

Check this product out it may help protect the plnats from coming into direct contact with the bulb.

T5 Sleeves

If you don't like that consider getting a thin sheet of temp resistant lexan and install over the t5's. Sort of like how they do in a tanning bed. The box can't wait to grow that little sprout :) :peace:

Thanks Ms Fox!

And McBudz, thanks for the tip about the sleeves!
My single strips already seem to have some sort of cover preventing direct contact - see below - but I'm still a bit worried. I'll have to be real careful, and if they're still too hot I'll have to tie branches away from them :goof:
(sorry, cam still sort of busted)

Mkay, almost done here...

I cut a hole in my right side panel for the exhaust and installed a second intake fan underneath, somewhere around the middle.

Nice & neat... gotta love hole saws!

Then I hung up my scrubber. I drilled through the top panel and used bolts & washers to secure the loops in place, and then used zip ties to fix the scrubber.

I attached the side panel, and the exhaust frame. Everything was pretty well aligned.. Tightening up the zip ties holding the scubber allowed me to get the perfect height. I used duct tape to cover any potential air leaks.

..and then added the cover.. pointing upwards so the air doesn't get pushed down and caught in the intake fan again.

And here's my MJ tanning bed :) It gets pretty damn hot in there, even with T5s... i got up to about 90F when the door was closed and no fans running.. going to have to hook up those 2 intake fans on each side!

Take your rubbermaid tub you have and hold it up to a light and look inside, if you can see the light through the material, regardless of how dim it is, you'll need to get some black Krylon Fusion spray paint and paint it or you'll have algae issues which will kill your plants; do the same with your lid. You'll probably need 2-3 cans of it to thoroughly make it light proof, I failed to do so and had major algae issues after a week. Don't skimp for cheaper spray paint, it will take a lot more to light proof it and may flake off, the Krylon Fusion is made for plastic... And save some money on nutes if you've not bought any, they are EXPENSIVE!!! Also, what kind of water are you going to be using? Some people are lucky enough to have good tap water for hydro but most of us have too much chlorine and too much calcium which will give you problems, if you have a TDS meter see if it's under 250 ppm, you may be able to use it and many say to fill a tub up and let it sit for 24-48 hrs stirred periodically to evaporate the chlorine, I've heard others say the bubblers in the reservoir will make it evaporate quickly but I can't confirm that. High calcium content will give the plants magnesium lockout as I found out the hard way. Your best option is to use RO or distilled water if you got the $ left over.

If you want, check out my DWC/closet grow to learn from some of my mistakes and maybe get some ideas...

Real nice looking setup though and as Ms. Fox said, Mylar won't give you hotspots, that's only with aluminum foil.

Thanks Strat, Racefan and 311!

I'll keep that tip about the floros in mind - definitely great info to know!!

Regarding my tapwater, it's at about 170ppm out of the faucet. I will be letting it sit for at least 24 hrs before use (does it have to be in the dark even then? probably needs at least a small opening for the cholrine to evap out...).
I don't have any $ left over for RO, and don't know of any places around here to get distilled H20 by the gallon, plus I def went a little over budget on this box so tap water it will be :smokin:

And thanks for the calcium tip - is there an easy way to check your tapwater for calcium levels?

do you ever get a white sediment build up in or around your hot water faucet? If so then calcium is too high. My calcium in my well is super high. To the point of actually plugging lines and aerators. Plus our water stinks like crap. I bought a portable 4 stage ro set up off ebay for $50.00 and reduce my water ppm from over 300 to less than 5 and it's so pure that we drink it.

Thanks Racefan - no white buildup on my taps :) I was also wondering if too little calcium to leave traces on your sink could yet still be too much for a plant.

Would a brita tap filter help purify the water enough that is doesn't need to sit out for 24-48 hrs? It does list chlorine as one of the elements it filters. Does anyone give brita-filtered water directly to their plants?

This is a very nice cab dude. I have about 300 invested into mine and love it. My next purchase is going to be mylar for sure. I can't wait to see what you produce out of that sucker. I'm probably going to build a mother clone cab here in a few months.
