Bud Washing

Sorry for the redundancy, I'm new to posting on this forum.
Question: Can you provide a mix rate using 29% peroxide?
Thank you!

Welcome!

On top of my head I'd say 1 part H2O2 to 10 parts water, or use 10 times less H2O2 in the mix(30/3=10 so logically it would be ~10 times stronger, I don't know if it works like that)

there are terps that dissipate, disappear at around room temperatures..if you can smell it after the wash, there are terps being released.
-hot liquids dissolve more things than cooler.. :Namaste:

Hey DrZiggy,

So are you suggesting keeping the water temp. of the wash on the slightly cooler side below room temp? Like, not cold per se, but cooler than 70% which is what room temp. is about.

Trying to prepare for my first expected outdoor harvest wash this weekend. :Namaste:

it does! :thumb: commonly used regular H2O2 is 3%

C1 x V1 = C2 x V2

C=Concentration or % in this case..
V = Volume (using 1 cup = 8 oz as example)

(29) x (8 oz) = (3) x (?)
?= 77 oz of 3%

so 1 oz of the almost 30% H2O2 will make 10 oz of 3%

:)

yes.. 50-55F is what i've used; sometimes a little cooler..

Some terpenes are very volatile and will evaporates at low temperatures and these will evaporate when hung to dry at room temperature anyway. It's mostly the citrus and floral terpenes, like in perfumes they disappear from the bouquet first(topnotes).

When I haven't had the time to get the buckets ready the day before wash, I go with lukewarm - lukewarm - cold, it's all good;)

Noobie first grower here. My disclaimer :peacetwo:

I am just over the top excited. Started my first grow by plating seeds of Acapulco Gold, Laughing Buddha and Vanilla Kush back on April 28, 2016 and transplanted to 25-gallon smart pots outside on June 4th. Due to a minor case of PM on just my Vanilla Kush (thank goodness since that's the only genetic that's actually ready, I will be harvesting those three trees tomorrow and washing them.

This forum and this particular thread on washing has been inspirational and after following for a few years, finally took the leap of faith to grow my own; though not new to cannibus. That started in 1969. This will just be for my family and main reason was to control the cleanliness of the grow; know exactly what was used to during the growth (organic only), harvesting and curing correctly to yield a smooth smoke and being able to select the exact genetics I desired; with a lower cost being the last reason. I've taken this all step by step and this site has just been invaluable.

I did plan to wash but never planed on using Hydrogen Peroxide. I hated the idea of using that since it sounds so, well, chemically. At any rate, after conradino and Doc Bud diagnosed some PM on my ladies, it's a must now. Coincidentally, I went to whole foods today to get some groceries and they had "food quality H2O2". Having no idea how that differed from regular H2O2 found in most stores, my intuition screamed at me "dummy, this is food quality H2O2 3%. Cannibus is food. GET IT!! ", so I did.

Turns out the difference is that on the brown bottle, or one meant solely for topical use, regulations do not require it list all ingredients. Some of those ingredients not listed are toxic, consisting of metals. Check out this video below created by the manufacturer of the product I selected. The approximate cost of 1.5 gallons of this stuff, which is whats needed in a 5 gallon tub I use, is about $75. That's pricey, no doubt, but in the scheme of things, I consider it a bargain when it's only adding to the cleaning and sterilization of the product with no potential metals or toxic stabilizers being introduced. I never intended to even use H2O2 unless I had some PM, which I do on the Vanilla Kush, but after learning about the food quality H2O2, I am thinking of using it from now on, regardless. I'll see how this run goes and what you all think.

Apologies if this has already been covered. Don't recall reading about it and have read all 100+ pages of this awesome thread. Will be interested in your comments, but for me, personally, I'm sold. No way would I use a non food-quality H2O2 after learning this...

Will take pics tomorrow and share.

Just to touch-back in. So did my very first harvest and washing yesterday morning. Planned to do all three Vanilla Kush trees but it took me 4 hours just to harvest, wash and hang two, so third will have to wait. Also the first H2O2 got so insanely dirty, no way was I going to continue using that for third plant and ran out of H2O2. Ordering more and in a few days will harvest that last one.

Felt good washing the cannibus and got a good rhythm going. All buckets were about 65 degrees. First one contained 3% food grade H2O2 at a mixture of 30% H2O2 70% water. Second was 5 gallons of water with 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 lemon juice. Third and fourth buckets plain water.

First bucket became increasingly dirty to the point of disgusting by the time the second tree was done. Changed the lemon juice/bakiing soda water about half way through and that was pretty bad as well but no where as bad as the first one. I'm thinking that H2O2 is a damn effective cleaner in addition to the preventive reasons of using it when PM is present. Third bucket rinse wasn't too bad but and fourth bucket was actually pretty clean, even after first tree; but also changed the water on the 3rd and 4th about half way through.

Was going to take lots of pictures but didn't. Couldn't. This was my first harvest ever and between that, trimming off questionable leaves, examining buds, washing, drip drying, moving to final hanging drying area, my plate was too full and gloved hands too dirty for picture taking. I did snap a shot of one newly washed branch and the final drying garage space below.

What you can't see are a few things I added to the garage drying space to make it better. Of course, I cleaned the place up first and added a very good air cleaner unit to suck any dust etc from the air and a humidifier; currently set at 55%. Also have a fan facing the ceiling to move air around which is also helped a bit by the output of the air purifier.

Once again, words can't do justice to my appreciation to all of you here at 420 Forums. This thread has been invaluable as all the comments and advise since joining.

Peace,

When you see the crap in the buckets, and realize it won't be entering your body, it all makes sense doesn't it?

Can you imagine smoking unwashed buds? Yuck.

Any of you washing for the first time save a branch of unwashed seperately and have a blind taste test and see how big a difference it is. Then when friends give you unwashed you will say
" thanks " but then never smoke it. I give unwashed away now. Many of us will not smoke nasty unwashed any more 8-)

I am currently waiting on doing washed v unwashed blind taste/look tests. At the moment i am smoking 2 strains that were pulled early due to budrot and PM so they had to get washed so no comparison to be made yet. I have some unwashed and washed buds sitting to one side to do tests with, they went full term. They are now fully cured so just waiting for my pal to come a visiting and put it to the test. I think outdoor does need washing, indoor ones not so much. Once i get round to testing i'll be back with opinions.

good for you for testing! :bravo: I have washed only indoor grown(outdoor grown hopefully coming up in weeks) and you may want to consider washing indoor grown too. ;)

Well i dont get the chance to grow indoor due to family and space restrictions. Perhaps one day i will get to grow indoors. I think with indoors they less likely to get covered in insect goop and gunk or get covered in some hairs or dust so bud washing not really needed, however, if i do grow indoors again then i would do washed v unwashed and see how things are. Most stuff i buy (even from people i know) isnt washed or dont wash it and it seems ok to me and never had any problems with it.
