Bluter Gets Schooled Hempy Style Winter 2018

Glad to see it’s going better. There is actually a bit of stoner science to the not ph’ing with hempy. Each nutrient is best absorbed at different ph levels. So when you let your ph drift you actually allow the plant to better absorb each individual nutrient. In regular hydro when you only change the water every 1-2 weeks the drift can cause issues with deficiencies and lock out but with hempy you replenish the reservoir every couple days so it works out for the best.

Or at least that’s how I justify my laziness to myself.

Hey Bluter sorry still not got any advice to give.

Although if pushed I'd say keep doing what your doing. Else you'll end up chasing your tail.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along shortly.

Fingers crossed for you.

:Namaste:

trust me. every good thought helps..

Sup man? Sorry to hear about your troubles with hempy. I fudged my first one up pretty bad too. I was using AN and my pH was EVERYWHERE. Like 4.4 to 7.8 in a 24hr period. Not blaming AN cuz it worked the treat in dwc but swapped nutes, for some reason or another, from AN to the GH Maxi series and dusted off my pH pen and CaMg. No more chasing deficiencies and lock-outs due to erratic pH. I live in the NorthEast US and its very humid this year so im using like 99% perlite/1% vermiculite(in the top 4 or 5 inches of the perlite to help with root mass closer to the surface. It has helped tremendously btw).
What lights are you using for your seedlings? The cobs? Maybe they are too much for the wee ones? Dunno. I start my seeds/clones in solo cups of 100% perlite under a 120w(equivalent) cfl and 100w(eqiv.) household led bulb, both 2700k daylight. When they get stronger i start them with my led waaaayyyy up high. Ive fried a few little ones. Few big ones too. Get em too close and ledsll fry the shit outta your tops. LoL im losing track... Been puffing on some chemdawg...
Anyway dont get discouraged man. We all hit bumps but after trying soil and dwc and coco, perlite hempy is easy af and grows some sticky big ladies with relative hands off-ness.

the AN line is supposed to be all the shit here right now. bunch of the locals rage on about it. i had it recommended by more than one shop as well, so i gave it a go. the AN trio i'm using is aimed right at the guys comfortable with the GH flora trio. it's hydro nutes but most everyone here is HP promix, or HP / coco, and a few fox farm variants, so that may be a factor. dunno anyone else in hempy here at all. or even hydro right now. our water is awful.

the AN two-part series is getting some attention here and may be more suited to what i'm doing. i'm used to the two-parts a bit more from my hydro days yrs ago. i'm getting the trio more figgered out, tho there's no way i can see using the bottle strength chart AN recommends even in soil.

not caring about the ph out is probably the best advice i could have got. i feel so much better lol.

i recognize the usefulness of letting ph drift in hydro so it isn't too much of a stretch. i've been feeding at a ph in between 5.7 and 5.85. the reasoning is everything in the nute mix should be available when i feed. in hydro i consistently changed out my res at 5.5 and would let it drift upward, i'm getting relaxed enough with hempy to see it'd work about the same.

i approached hempy a bit too much like soil i think. i've been in a soil grow for the past few years and probably just got too comfy with it. i gave my soil buckets to a guy wanting to grow meds for his adhd son, so i think i turned a corner there lol.

i'm trying a nute mix right now at 25% strength of the recommended AN trio and 50% of the recommended cal mag. with careful use of the cal mag i get a ppm at 95 and a ph at 5.80 with no up/down buffer. about perfect. just started it yesterday and will have a look see how they respond. the dosages are for seedling stage only.

will get a pic update in a day or so

thanks for all the help guys :green_heart:

Hi blunter I hope they respond well for you mate keep up the good work bro

thanks man.

they haven't actually gotten killed yet so it really helps with the confidence :p
been slowly pushing the nutes and light intensity up. so far 3 out of 4 look like they're with the program. i dunno about the last one, there's always a problem child. one of the clones might make it too. that would be a real surprise.

can probably stop worrying if i'm gonna kill them and start worrying why they are so small

Just keep at it bro and if at first we don't succeed, then try and try again. Lol I'm glad they are starting to get in line for you and your rite haha there is always one that wants to test ya haha got a Fresh Candy that's half the size of my NL and they were planted at the same time lol.

i shocked them hard and knocked them back a few weeks. i'm just kind of guessing where they are at in development.

probably took too much on at once. i'm in totally new territory here. new space, new media, new nutes, first time using only the cob for all stages. if i had the choice i would have gotten a soil grow in first but it just wasn't in the cards. in a way i'm grateful, as the learning curve has been steep but worth the education. i did say it was a school project in the first place. i'm hoping some of my hassels can help someone else avoid the trouble i had in the future.

I'm glad you feel that way and I think most of us make these journals so that it's that little bit easier for the next noob to learn.
I'll be watching bro

cheers. appreciate the company, comments, and all suggestions.

good day 420 hope all is well. this is

day 27

and boy am i ever growing some tiny plants :p
seriously these things are real bonsai. everything is looking better tho, and most are with us on the rebound and starting to get with the program. just have to be patient and see if they outgrow my stunting ways lol.

the white cookies have regained their color and all the new growth coming in looks healthy, even if crazy small.

definitely showing indica lack of stretch. it's pushing new growth tho and stuff looks positive so i'm running with it. been increasing nute strength and light intensity incrementally each day. light is ~ 60% and i'm up to 160 ppm on the nutes. my base ppm is up to 38 ppm from 8 tho, so i'm only adding 120 ppm total. thinking my sediment and carbon filters might be getting a tad tired as i did not swap them out when i did the new RO membrane. will monitor that and see if it continues rising. for now i'm ok with it.

full

white cookie 2 has outgrown the worst of the damage and looks determined to catch up to her sister. there is a bit of leaf necrosis left i could trim, but the newer ones are coming nice and will carry the load. will probably give it a bit of a snip.

everything remains a tad on the pale side to my eyes. big improvement over all tho, might just be the strains or the fact they are sooo young and behind. been watching cal mag and nitrogen, and adding a bit extra of both. not sure if i targeted the right nutes, but at least they aren't hating it.

the one cbdream has been a real trooper throughout. keeps steaming along ok in spite of my mistakes. :D

full

you can see why i'm monitoring the color. the light makes them look a touch more pale than they are in real life, but you can probably see why i continue to be a little concerned. still it's going mostly in the right direction... the new growth is looking healthier than the older stuff, and seems to be retaining a bit more color for now. on it like a hawk tho.

still feeding between ph 5.75 and 5.85. little or no buffer added. been ph'ing mostly with the cal mag, so long as my ppm stay in target range. the run off ph is still ridiculous tho, averaging out between 6.6 and 6.8. actually my highest was 6.78, which is oddly still a downward trend over all. for now i'm at a loss, not trying to correct but watching the situation.

i have been musing about root stimulators / enzymes. they might help with the health and plant size. figger some of the lack of size may be attributed to the fact they are still establishing root systems after the shock i put them thru. i know nothing about them tho. everything i looked at is either panned on the webs or incredibly spendy.

if anyone uses them or has an opinion i'd appreciate your comments. :)

then we have the problem child

full

what the heck ! ? ? super tiny, pale, and stuck on something like day 4.

i don't have a clue what's going on with this cbdream. it's really giving it the college try but i'm not sure how to help. gave it a bit of a flush with added cal mag and nitrogen yesterday. nothing drastic. everyone else got 1 L and this gal got 2. if it doesn't improve i'll probably flush with straight ph'd RO and cal mag alone. honestly can't tell if it's developmental, or i've locked something out. the super high run off ph isn't helping in getting to the bottom of this one either.

i could use some ideas if anyone has an opinion on that poor girl. :hmmmm:

got me a zombie clone lol

full

believe it or not this is an improvement.

there was not one green leaf on this, well still isn't really lol. it's the one that had some root structure after the disaster, and got stuck in some straight perlite. it's been getting exactly the same as the three healthiest seedlings, and soundly ignored. absolutely floored it's still here in any shape. zero plan for it other than just keep doing the same. cheering it on just cause it's sooo tenacious. expect nothing and maybe be pleasantly surprised.

perspective shot so you can see how tiny and underdeveloped everyone remains.

full

i've been real happy with my room conditions all the way thru. it's turning out to be a pretty good space, too bad i can't use conditions as any kind of excuse lol

full

as always i appreciate any comments, suggestions, questions etc.

have a great day 420 :green_heart:

Man they look so much better.

Sorry I've got no advice to give, but I'd say keep doing what your doing.

I'm rooting for the zombies, I reckon they'll pull through and suprise you :D

These plants can take some shit.

:Namaste:

cheers. so far i'm surprised at everything. :D

it's awesome they are still around after what i did to them. sigh lol

I'm extremely interested to see how the cbd dream turns out for you. My wife has back problems, but she isnt a fan of thc so much. I've been explaining to her what cbd does and how it won't give her the classic marijuana high. So now I have to find the right strain that way she doesn't get the buzz but gets the relief she needs.

Same here. Wife has fibromyalgia and I spiral fractured both lower leg bones few years ago. Full of pins and plates

hi wayne.

my sis has fibro. cbd canna pills on their own have not done a pile, but am happy to report thc creams help. also we had success with a cbd canna pill that had some thc content. can't remember the strain but it was 6% thc and 8% cbd. i'm hoping the cbdream 1:1 ratio has a similar effect.

thanks for popping in. :peace:

You’ve got to give them time for the roots to hit their reservoirs then you’ll start to see more rapid leaf growth. It takes a bit after each transplanting.

i'm not sure they're gonna like hitting that res where the ph is sitting lol.

got some voodoo juice to try but it's a bit early yet. it's more for veg stage and i still consider these gals seedling. hydro shop gifted me a sampler of big bud with it so i picked up a small bottle of the voodoo. no reports of the stuff going bad locally, and i know the shop will back it if it is rotten. gonna hold off for a wk or two and see where i get.

been watching your journal with much likes. thanks for stopping by.
:passitleft:

hi 420, hope all is well and green.

short non drama update.

day 33

approaching late seedling / early veg. still waiting for stuff to hit the res. nothing is big enough to consider lst or any fancy stuff. everyone is looking a bit healthier and happier.

the smaller white cookies

full

they are a bit greener and i got past the nute tipping and light burn issues. been slowly pushing everyone's nutes up as we go. actually backed off a bit from about 300 ppm down to about 250. nobody seems to be asking for anything, so probably hanging at that level now for a wk or so.

larger of the two white cookies

full

leaves are starting to develop a bit more now. light has been upped to about 70% incrementally. likely staying at that level for a bit. really happy with the light rig. been figuring out how to use it. haven't adjusted height at all, just been using the intensity to adjust as it's been working well.

don't worry about the drops. brushed them off with a paper towel, the light doesn't burn them either.

the first cbdream continues to express some of the sativa side of the family. .

full

for whatever reason that one just has no problem with anything. it's gonna be the stretchiest tho. think i'm gonna let the individuals do their thing with just a little topping. maybe try lst. wanted to learn scrog, but will probably leave that for a mono crop cycle.

cbdreams were a bit pale, so i dropped ph to 5.6 on the feeds on the thought i was missing some calcium or other stuff at the lower end. both cbdreams responded positive, and the white cookies didn't mind so i'm now feeding a bit lower than before.

problem child responded to the lower ph and looks to be keeping with us.

full

almost looks like she decided to self top. definitely looking more of the indica side of the family than her sister.

humidity has dropped a bit here. it's normally a bit higher but gets drier in winter generally. nothing seems to mind tho, so am just keeping an eye on it. usually sits a bit higher when the room is closed up.

full

final group shot.

full

little clone in there just keeps pressing on.

take care 420. :)

Looks a lot better. That self topped one is interesting.

have a closer look tho, i don't think it fully has. it's a strange one for sure. kinda like it lol.

They should start to take off soon. Have fun
:passitleft:

:thumb:

yeah another wk or two. ph out has been dropping too. sitting just under 6.5 to just under 6.7.
