Bignstrange's 4x4 800W COB LED Grow Tent - Promix - New Grower - Drop In!

Happy 420 fellow west coasters!

Bignstrange - you sound like you have it dialed in. My only problem with Amazon is they are too darn convenient and their 2 day delivery can't be beat.

I'll be following your grow up to harvest. I'm sure I'll learn a lot.

I sympathize with you there, it's way to easy to find stuff you "need" to add on there. That being said the service they provide is great and id rather have it then not!

Well I'm glad to have you here! Everything I learned is from people from here and other forums, but 420 has an amazing community so I'm proud to make this my home, and pass forward what knowledge I've picked up!

Like the plants everything goes in cycles, so what we miss or mess up as growers now, we get to pass that on to the next cycle/generation and watch them do better than we ever imagined. That's what life's all about ain't it?

Cheers Troy! .

Hey everyone,

Just a quick update! Well maybe not so quick I seem to get quite wordy this late at night :lot-o-toke:

:cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley::cheesygrinsmiley:

Psycho is up :cheesygrinsmiley:

She's looking good too. Nice green developing as of 10:30PM and she has another hour and a half of tanning to do. Im pretty happy with that turn around and I'm really looking forward to watching this gal grow up :thumb:

Im going to keep the solo cup on her until the morning, and maybe until those first leaves come out a bit. Either way humidity has been on point for me so I think well do fine.

For water Ive been spraying the top soil with plain water at 5.8, just been sitting in a bucket for a couple days and tested every day to make sure ph is good still and swapped every 3 useable days. Ill keep spraying until they're upright, then switch to local watering until they are old enough to drink at which point they will be binge drinking, saying they'll never do that again and then the thirst hits them and wadya know. Lol in less fun terms, heavy waterings less frequently once they're older. Im not familiar with promix so it'll be interesting to see how quick it dries up!

I also checked the plants earlier in the night tonight so the tent would stay sealed longer, hopefully keeping up temps and RH throughout the night. I also put roughly a cup of water onto the tray I'm using over top of a heat mat. This water was wicked up into each pot roughly evenly and with the help of the heat from underneath should help with temps and moisture as well. So far this system is working really good. I only put water in the bottom at night, and during the day I just spray the sides of the tent and top of my light reflector occasionally and Ive been able to maintain RH above 60 the whole time going up to about 72 when I spray which is just perfect! Temps all day were between 77 and 80 and I am happy :cheesygrinsmiley:

Hoping we see a couple more babes waking up with me tomorrow morning, but for now pictures of Psycho from tonight for you to compare with the one taken this morning! (forgive my brutal camera phone work XD)

Hey Luweedgi!

Thanks for stopping by. These lights are pretty unique from what I can tell. I did a lot of research on what was available on the market and for my budget and location, these were the best buy. I won't do a sales pitch for the company, but I'm in Canada so I went to (grow lights. ca). Idk what the rules are on posting links but you can find em easy. Anyways the lights I bought are their company branded commercial LED fixtures-no doubt straight from china, but the specs are what sold me.

Originally I ordered a light twice the size but they didn't have it on hand so I got the two smaller ones, 2 X400's instead of 1 X800. So it uses 20W full spectrum COB LED's with UV and IR range. Each light has 20 bulbs, actual power draw is only 200 W per light. They use Bridgelux chips and are EXTREMELY F'IN bright-glasses are in the mail! Each light produces 32000 lumens, and approx 160 lumens per watt which is what got me all excited. They get extremely good penetration, apparently, so well see how they perform. 1 light is supposed to cover a 4x4 and fully replace a 400W hps system so two should be more than enough.

These lights are beastly, full steel and aluminium construction, solid state-no fans! They weigh 25 lb each and are intertek approved and IP66 dust and water resistant! I really took a risk on them, but I'm hoping that they do what they say they can and I'm excited to start testing them and share the results with you all!

Stay tuned, and let me know if you want to know anything else!

Bignstrange :blunt:
I think Luweedgi may have checked these lights out but maybe others haven't looked into it so I took the liberty of taking a couple screen shots to show everyone what were working with. I'm by no means an expert on par ppf ppfds ųmols or anything of the sort, but after doing a bit of reading around here on one of Rider's threads and subsequent materials, thought this info might be relevant to those who can interpret it!

Like I said I don't exactly know what all of this means, I have a basic understanding at this point but have yet to look into where I want to be but I hope it's helpful to someone on here! Maybe you can school us all, class is in session!

And yes I quoted myself because I'm...

For those that are new to the science and language of lighting I'd like to try to help make some sense of it. I'm def no expert and won't get butthurt if someone jumps in and corrects me. This is necessarily simplified so don't crucify me if you've got your PhD in particle physics.

Lumens are the term most of us are familiar with. When you're comparing light bulbs at the store they all have lumen ratings printed on the box. That's great for general lighting because lumens relate to the way our eyes process light. We know that a higher lumen rating means more light output. And we all know that there's a visible difference between a warm white and a cool white and a daylight bulb. It's a difference we can see because the light energy of a warm white bulb reproduces light more on the red end of the visible spectrum, while a daylight bulb reproduces more light on the blue end of the spectrum. Sometimes the packaging will list a number followed by a K, which is degrees Kelvin. The important thing to know about that number is that a low number, like 3000K or 3500K is going to produce a warmer more red light, while a high number, like 5000K or 6500K is going to produce a "whiter" light because it's producing light higher in the blue spectrum. The degrees Kelvin, i.e., 3500K or 5000K, tells us which part of the spectrum is dominant.

PAR
Plants don't see light the way we do. They absorb radiated light energy, and the range of usable energy that they absorb is called photosynthetically active radiation, or PAR for short. PAR is the light that plants can "see" and use.

PPF
Light is made up of photons. The photons that are in the range that plants can use are called photosynthetic photons. A measurement for the total amount of light, visible to humans, that a device outputs is luminous flux which is measured in lumens. But since we are interested in PAR, or the light that plants use, we measure the total PAR output as photosynthetic photon flux, or PPF. PPF is measured inside a sphere where the total energy is captured. It's like a light grenade going off inside a sphere. It measures the total light splattered over the inside of the sphere but tells us nothing about how much light actually got on whatever portion of the sphere we wanted to cover with light. So we need a measurement that tells us how much of that light went where we needed it.

PPFD
We have the total energy of the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), known as the photosynthetic photon flux (PPF). But now we need to quantify the density, or how much of the energy reaches the plants. The measurement of how much of the energy reaches the plants is the photosynthetic photon flux density, or PPFD.

Think of PAR as plant light. PPF is the measurement of the total plant light produced. And PPFD is a measurement of the plant light that reaches the plant.

...to be continued

This is from a thread Rider509 has going over in grow lighting regarding some pretty intense Samsung led light strips. He summarized a pretty informative article into this easy for beginners to understand explanation!

So much to learn beyond the grow! :S

Cool thanks for getting back to me! I'll definitely stop by and see how things are going for you! Always good to compare and contrast. Mind if I ask what the growers recharge is for? Forgive me if it's in your journal I'm just asking before I read it .
It's a microbial something something and I just realized it says for soil. I'm in coco. Hmmm why did i even look dammit. Now thus is gonna bother me

Description off the website
"Recharge is our all-in-one, natural growth stimulant powered by our proprietary living soil microbe package. It is intended to be used as a soil amendment to establish colonies of beneficial bacteria in horticultural systems.

Recharge is a Bio-Fertilizer and can be used in BOTH ORGANIC & CHEMICAL PRODUCTION to make any fertilization program more efficient and much more effective."

"strength concentrations.

Yay. Just found this...says it can be used in coco. The piece of mind I needed.

I'm subbed in! Nice setup! I'm a beginner as well, so we're all learning together

Good luck on guessing the strains! Lol That will be interesting to say the least!
Begginers and veterans we all learn together. I'm in the same boat as u. Noob. But I'm more noonish. At least u have 1 grow under yr belt

Troy,

I also just noticed you have a grow journal, I'm gunna get started on that tomorrow morning, hold me to it!

Please come on over. I can use all the pointers I can get. I'm starting to see some amber trichomes so hoping harvest is in site. At times I'm starting to second guess myself if the Trich's are really milky or whether I'm psycing myself out. :welcome:

Hey Swag!

Glad to hear the refresh will work for you in coco! A good lesson to note for any beginners following is all mediums require different nutrient systems, there are nutrients that do it all, but be sure to confirm your media mixes with your notes and vice versa! I myself started looking into promix as a soil substitute and it wasn't until i did more reading into it, that i discovered it was indeed soiless! Not a huge thing if i went into it with the nutes i have, but watering PH changes and that has a massive effect on plants! That stuff seems similar to the OG Teas root webstar ill be using this run, good stuff!

Thanks for pulling that up Swag!

Aw its so great to have you here Chakita!

Glad you found your way over! Lookin forward to raising some ladies as beautiful as your own! thanks for joining the ride!

Im gunna make sure I read up on your run throughout the day! OOHH harvest time! I know it can be hard to get a good look at those trichs sometimes. How late are you wanting to harvest? Whats your preference? I seem to like about 30% amber on most of my smoke! anyways maybe people here can debate that, in the mean time ill open your journal up on my phone and put my head down for a bit!

10/01/2017-AM

This morning another babe broke ground, she's looking healthy! I suspect she's one of our blue cindy's that had a good root going before going in the ground, but ill reserve my guesses until week 2 of veg XD I pulled the solo cup off of psycho and put her up towards the light a bit more, about 4 inches away and Ill move it closer if I see any uncomfortable stretching going on. I have nice high humidity in the tent, and all the tricks from last night worked, when I opened up this morning we were still at 60% so real good!

I will upload a couple pics tonight, hopefully a couple more break ground today!

:thanks:

I think I will be hitting for about 40% amber. I do like a nice evening high but mostly am growing for a night time tincture to help with insomnia issues. Really been doing a lot of reading on percentage. Just a couple months ago I had never heard of a Trichome .. LOL

Sounds about right! Good to cuttem before the THC starts to degrade too much!

To me it's amazing how many different strains there are and how they all affect us differently. Then, as growers, we really get to tailor our harvest to our own personal taste by harvesting at different times and giving us so many options for our medicine choice! For example a sativa that runs a bit longer so that while it dominantly has uppy features, the degraded thc which converts into cbd among a myriad of other molecules, to give you that relaxing calming effect on a day time med!

To me that's awesome, I'm really excited to start growing my own medicine that I can dial in for my personal needs! What method are you using to make tinctures Troy?

10/01/2017-PM

just a quick update, will have pics in morning!

We have 4 plants so far! 2 are up and atem, the other two should be upright by morning! I'm gunna put solos back on the plants I took them off of to keep humidity up as temp drops overnight. They are all looking super cute and lively!

I'm gunna start guessing what's what tomorrow as well. I'll get pics in the morning when I move the light in closer to the plants and get these babies crawling!

Look forward to sharing them with you all!

10/02/2017-AM

Good morning everyone!

Hope everyones making as much progress as I am! Ive been reading all your journals and following along diligently! If you have a journal and want to share feel free to post a link on my thread, and Ill make sure I get in, catch up, and sub in for the rest of your grow! :high-five:

Update;

As of this morning all 5 plants are "up". One is just a little behind but will be standing tall by the end of the day! Ive taken the liberty of guessing what these babes are based on the order they came up in, my tap root observations, and some very minor differences between them that I'm noticing. Ill wait to confirm their designations until I see some identifying traits, but Im gunna throw my guesses out there and hope daddy knows his little girls XD

I moved the light down today, took the domes off of all the plants that are up, and unplugged the heat mat today. The CFL puts off a ton of heat so it should be able to keep em nice and warm from here on in. Domes, heat mat go back on at night to keep them nice and warm overnight.

Im spraying the walls of the tent and leaving all sorts of DIY humidifiers around (plastic cups getting sprayed so they evaporate due to heat XD) and humidity seems to be staying above 60. The ideal is 65-70% for this first week then drop it approx 5% every week thereafter. Temps have been consistent during the day 78-80 and overnight low of 68. Babies are eating it right up. Once they get their first set or two of leaves I'm gunna start vegging under one of the LED fixtures to really set them free.

So Day 1's

Psycho WW-09/30
(Probably) All BC-10/02-one was up yesterday but Ill count it as today
(Probably) the other WW- Will be up by the end of day today so I will count it as tomorrow 10/03

So were officially in the seedling page, and I finally have more to talk about then just lights and set up and blah blah blah. Getting excited :slide:

With out further ado, my babes <3

I can't wait to name them all, it'll be curious to see what names they earn. If they're anything like me they'll be a little strange, but a lot of fun and I'm just thrilled to get a chance to raise them. GOSH I LOVE THESE PLANTS.

K ill stop for now, thanks to everyone who's on board and helping me get more folks in here! I can use all the help I can get to make this the best first journal/grow Ill ever do! XD

Cheers everyone! :thanks:
