Auto Growers Unite: A Community Thread

No sir you are incorrect. I have no skill Joe. Just a beginner taking advice from the community. You got skills man your plants look good mine is all routy and all over the place. Colas taller than others . I still have a crap ton of learning. As always Joe thanks for the kind words buddy. You rock !
Dude your nuts. Your doing good man only upwards we can go bud

Your 100% correct sir! Love when someone who really gets in there and cuts and studies their girls. The roots will slow, but this is why I preload my soil with kangaroots. Then allow the roots to really get going by keeping the soil almost too dry. As a result I have bigger plants with faster growth. Autos top growth depends heavily on root development. I have heavily defoliated throughout veg and flower. But with reason. I only take fan leaves during veg for shade removal. Tops will grow so much faster that by the time my girls hit 3weeks I have 6-8 main tops that are all even. Then I allow selective branching. I remove almost all leaves after the second flower stretch, when bud sites are established. Now with photos you have to stop. They won't replace leaves. But with autos they will actually adapt to defoliation and since they always grow, they always re-leaf. I take nearly every leaf small and big except for a table of leaves around the outside bottom of the plant. These 15-20 big fan leaves will completely power your entire plant the whole grow, the rest she needs will come from sugar leaves and most will come from the roots. Leaves are store houses . People always seem to forget this. I get bigger plants without leaves(bud weight) so you can save the old information that said they were necessary. Outdoor plants need their leaves in the wild for when times get tough(no rain, wind shields, no food, PREDATORS(main).) She will keep these leaves for back up and safety. Now since we are there to make sure our prized girls get every nutrient when she needs it with pinpoint accuracy , she doesn't ever need to eat her leaves. This is why we wait until she has pulled all nutrient from leaves at harvest (better taste), she will eat them when she has no food. Budsites need light to grow. I don't know when or who, made the crap up about budsites needing leaves. They are part of the plant. They need light. I.E. This is why you lower buds are smaller. My buds on bottom are bigger than those on top... Makes sense right? Why would she build her biggest buds up top on the smallest stems? You want big buds? Open up those budsites from around week 5-6 after her post-flower stretch. How many? In easy words, all of em. Buds have a system. Roots-light-Bud. I don't smoke leaves.

I have found that the size and density of buds are directly related to how the plant is treated and manipulated in the veg period mostly. While it is true the a sufficient amount light is needed to produce large buds the matter has more to do with the plants natural hormonal response than simply removing fan leaves during the plants flower period. I find the removing fan leaves during flower helps with airflow and distribution of resources by allowing more light to lagging shaded flowers. Defloiation during the veg period allows more light to and stimulates internode branch growth. It has to with manipulating the plants natural process to fight for apical dominance and forcing the plant to distribute hormones and therefore growth more evenly. Just striping off the fan leaves does not cause the plant to have bigger roots or larger buds. If done properly with an understanding of the plants needs it can be a highly effective tool.

@BulletTooth ... you are a grower after my own heart.... I have been so hated on for cutting and trimming fans.... I am doing it now on plants 3 weeks old and will until just before harvest.... I actually throw the leaves back to the soli for the plant and have never had an issue and again there are people telling me I am wrong.... When you learn something go with it... If some one else can't be open minded to your approach then to hell with them.... Just don't call people wrong and liars for making statements is what I say...
Happy growing...

I'm willing to suspend judgement, but when you say your lower buds are bigger than your top buds I find my credulity stretched to near breaking point. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Do you have something to back up your words?

@greengostarr This was my first plant ever and I started defol'ing I am way more advanced and will show pictures this outdoor season. They were uniform buds and I got just under 12oz on the 3.5' Pineapple Kush...

I love growing the Pine tree look.... I find the low center of gravity makes them very storm worthy on bad summer nights... no scrog screens necessary thus very low maintenance other than the trimming required...

Very nice! Most would be lucky to grow a plant half as lovely for there first grow.

Very very nice looking plant my mouth just watered. Well done. Maybe they might be me on my next grow. Who knows.

Yeah she isn't done but I'll post some pics to show what I mean. I have a journal that I started and still going where I've completely tried to murder a plant. Nebula Haze proved this a very long time ago and was beaten up so bad about it that there is actually a very long proof-giving journal he did. I'll connect everyone to what I saw many years ago. He's one of the best

I wait until the stretch is over and flowers are forming, look down on plants and you'll see the flowers that are not recieving direct light. Trim just the fans that are blocking light.

I like to pop a few leaves off during veg if they are shading lower growth(i.e. the removed leaf is better than a shaded growth tip) flowering I wait until budsites are set and the second stretch is done. Then I open her up starting at the top working down through the middle. I like every budsite open. So for me anyways I think the best flower defoliation is week 5-6 after the post-flower stretch.(autos)
