Hello everyone.
Getting very close to the start of my next project. Building a 42 cob cxb3590 superpanel. Going in a Mars Hydro 8X8 tent and lighting 6X8' of the tent. Yup, just about 1 cob per square foot of lighting area.
This will be pushed by 6 Meanwell HLG-320H-C1400B drivers.
The light will consist of 12 CXB 3590's in 5000k and 30 CXB3590's in 3000k.

All dimmable from 0 watts to 1950 watts from the wall and the 5k and 3k being independently dimmable so in veg I can run higher blue and in flower I can run higher red and anywhere in between. This big light when finished will, at medium drive be capable of 60%+ efficient.

Waiting on my cob chips and more heatsinks to come in and Ill start building the aluminum frame. Im not sure on my frame design yet but it will either be 2 piece or 4 piece.

Each row of COBs will be dimmable and each row will have its own wattage meter built into the system.

Lets have fun.

Wow, I'd love to follow. Can you list the cost of each item so we know what kind of budget you need build something like this?

Sure will. I'll get every part, individual cost and total cost up very soon.

I can already tell, that looks expensive...

My guess is somewhere between $3000-$4000?
Ill have exact numbers later tonight but a rough addition puts it just over $4k. My guess is it will come in at $4500 with all the little stuff.

fanleaf, what from the parts list above would be required to create the equivalent to a single Spectrum King SK400+?

I couldn't find anything online that allows me to compare - not using the same lingo as you, at least.

Forgive me if that is some sort of "forbidden" question, I'm a complete dummy when it comes to this.

You'd probably need 6-8 of those cobs to get the 440w equivalent that the sk400+ draws, depending on how hard you want to drive your LEDs. Since the drivers are pushing 320w max, you would need 2 drivers, so in just LEDs, heat sinks and drivers you're looking at around $800-900

From what Im reading you really cant compare the 2 for equivalency at all.

The Cree will be far far more efficient at the same wattage. I just dont see what to compare between the 2.
Heck just 6 of the cree cobs will cover the area and do it far more efficiently and can be ran anywhere wattage wise from 0-about 800w.
The white cobs just cant be beat for efficiency today. What exactly do you want me to compare between the two? Because there are so many options with the cree cobs to cover the same area as the advertised area on the 400 +. You can run anywhere from 5 to 25 of the crees in that same area . you can run 5 at higher wattage or 25 at a much lower power. Depending on the layout of these they can be 60% + efficient. These cobs that I'm using can be ran up to 135 Watts each but for the people who want very high efficiency you can feel your area with more of them and run them very very soft anywhere from 30 watts each to 50 watts each. For instance if you look at my light array in my journal below towards the end when I put in my new light array if I run all of those at 50 watts each it produces more light than the plants can consume . basically the ppfd is over saturation levels. With these lights people are getting 2 grams per watt Plus with a lot of these lights in a given area. When you start to approach one of these every square foot as when you can achieve some serious efficiency. versus a few lights in the same space ran at higher power. That says something for efficiency.

Also I like having absolute control over the amounts of Blues and reds that I can fine-tune anywhere I want them. Is there another way I can answer your question a little bit better?

The thing is that power draw isnt really comparable. If one light is 45% efficient with turning power to light and another is 60% efficient than the more efficient light will do more with 15% less power.

5 of these cobs will run at 400 watts from the wall with absolute ease (only 80w each) but thats not the goal here.

Ok guys so getting the Cree chips in is what I've been waiting for. I just got in 26 of the 3k's and the 9 needed 5k's so we are officially good to get the project started while we wait on the remaining 7 of the 3k chips to come in.

Here later today I'll put up a VERY rough drawing of the design and driver layout for you guys to go over.

Once I feel the design should work fine we will go ahead and do a picture by picture start of the frame.
