Afghan Kush: An Amateurs Attempt At Breeding

Thanks CO Finest, the Wild Thailand seed is coming along nicely' it has split and am hoping for a tap root growing out by the morning. @Fredwak, those are some nice buds and I like that name you picked for your hybrid. I've been thinking about names for the hybrid I'm attempting, maybe "Wild Kush"
Thanks how about "Tush"?

Hello everyone. The Wild Thailand seed is showing a tap root so early this morning I sowed the baby seed into a peat pot with some Fox Farms Happy Frog potting soil. I'm hoping for a baby girl on 4/20 :high-five::high-five:.

Hi everyone, hope your all staying safe during this pandemic. Today I topped the Wild Thailand seedling. I will also most likely top the plant a second time and apply LST tiedowns. The AK clone was looking weird for couple of weeks (bright green leaves) but I think it now has a new main branch to grow more normally.

Hi everyone, Yesterday I visited a garden center that I had not been to before mainly because it is closer to my home. Was kind of disappointed because they did not carry the Fox Farms potting soils. I ended up purchasing a potting soil named Nature's Creation Organic Potting Soil. It contains a mix of Compost, Coco Fiber, Pecan Mulch, Perlite, Mushroom Compost, Molasses, Native Recycled Trees and Shrubs, and Endo/Ecto Mycorrhizal Fungi.

Today I transplanted the Wild Thailand plant to it final home, a 5 gal. cloth pot. The new soil looked nice and rich, similar to the Fox Farms Happy Frog soil I've used. I am hoping for good results. The AK clone has been moved to a 3 gal. cloth pot and am reusing the old Happy Frog soil mix the male AK plants were growing in. I should set-up some sort compost bin so I can start recycling my old soils, lawn trimmings, and vegetable scraps.

Towards the end of the week I plan on topping the WT plant a 2nd time and will start thinking about putting her into 12/12 light schedule in a few more weeks. I have read that the WT can expect to have a vigorous growth spurt after the light schedule change.

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone.

I finally got my PH test powder this week and so I recalibrated my PH meter today. I have been using tap water for the WT plant and AK clone. I let the tap water set for 24-48 hours so the fluorination chemicals can evaporate out. My TDS meter measures the tap water PPM at about 310ppm; after adding the Fox Farm nutes at a little over half-strength, the PPM increased to about 1410ppm. So this weeks feeding on week 2 of the Fox Farms schedule is at about 1100ppm. I'll keep a close watch for any possible nute burns. The PH of the tap water runs at about 7.0 PH. After adding about 1/2 tsp. PH down and the Fox Farms nutes the PH tested at about 6.5 PH.

I'm going to wait another 2-3 days before I do the 2nd topping/LST on the WT plant, I'll add some pics then.

I'm considering upgrading my LED light. My currant 600w (110 actual watts) is giving me approximately 22 watts per square foot. I'm looking at a 1500w (265 actual watts) which would give my 36" x 20" grow space approximately 53 watts per sq. ft. I've read that for the best flowering results a grow space should have about 50 watts per sq. ft?

Hi everybody, Today I purchased a better LED light. I upgraded to the Bloomspect Dimmable Series BL1200 watt LED (actual power draw: 278w) It also will more than double the PAR values I currently have and give me approximately 55 watts of light per sq. ft. . In addition to separate veg/bloom switches there are also adjustable power draw settings. I also am hoping the new light has better cooling properties with the aluminum heat sink/dual fans.

With my currant light I always wondered if the weaker light was affecting bud size/density. I shouldn't have that issue now. I'm really excited to see how the Wild Thailand plant responds/bud development.

Hi Everyone, got my new Bloomspect 1200 last Friday. Its a lot bigger and heavier than my 600 W led. I initially set the veg portion at 100% and the bloom at about 60%. It is really bright and hot.

After 2 -3 days I started to notice I had quite a few lower leaves in the center turning yellow. First thing I did was dial back on the light intensity to about 50/50% for both veg and bloom settings as the tent was running hot. (approximately 100 degrees.) I've also opened the walk-in closet door some to let in AC cooled air and am now running about 90 degrees during the day in the tent . I'm not sure though if the yellow leaves is due to heat stress as the upper leaves on the plant look good. I also don't think its a PH issue as I have been testing the PH and using PH down to get my water to 6.5/6.6 PH. PPM has been over 2000 for the last couple of feedings following the FF feeding schedule. (thats kind of high ??) I am beginning to think I may have a nutrient lock-out (salt buildup ? ) causing nitrogen or cal/mag deficiencies.

My plan of Action: Tomorrow I will perform a flush with Fox Farms Sledgehammer ( I'll have to be careful as I killed a Tangerine Dream plant (3rd grow) the first time I used Sledgehammer) and flush with about 10 gal. PHed water. I will then feed a dose of Fox Farms CalMag and Bushdoctor seaweed/kelp. The flush should wash the accumulated salts out which I think may be causing the nute lockout/deficiencies. I plan on leaving the WT plant in veg for at least another week or 2 as I want a healthy plant growing before I start the light switch to 12/12.

Does that sound like a reasonable plan of action? Could a salt buildup be causing a nutrient lock-out?
I'm open to hearing suggestions from fellow growers.

Hi everyone. I did the flush today. I used filtered RO water PHed to between 6.1 - 6.5 and 275 - 325 PPM per gallon containers. The first flush was with 1 tsp Sledgehammer per 1 gal. water with 6.3 PH/420 PPM and the run-off tested to 6.6 PH/2550 PPM. I then continued with flushing with 4 gal filtered RO/PHed water. The 6th gallon of water had 1 tsp Sledgehammer added which tested at 6.2 PH / 403 PPM and the run-off was 6.5PH/1111PPM. I then let the WT plant set for an hour while I went to get more RO water. I ran another 4 gallons of PHed/filtered RO water with the last run-off testing at 6.6 PH/715PPM.

The final gal of water started at 6.1PH/240 PPM. I then added 2 tsp Bushdocter Kelp and 1 tsp CalMag which gave me 5.6PH/550PPM. I was kind of surprised by the lowering of the PH after I added the ingredients. The resulting run-off tested to 6.6PH/753 PPM. In all I used 11 gal. of water during the flushing process.

During this process I did observe that no matter what my starting PH was the soil mix consistently adjusted the PH run-off to 6.5/6.6PH. I have my plant back under the lights again at 1/2 power for both veg/bloom settings. A water-soaked 5 gal. cloth pot is heavy as I found out. It will be at least 3-4 days before I even think about watering again. I can only hope now that I have not killed my plant, but will keep an eye on her. Hopefully in another week to 10 days I can start the switch to 12/12 flowering stage.

Hello, I switched to the 12/12 light schedule about 6 days ago. I also lolli-popped the lower 1/3 of the plant leaves and smaller branches to promote bud growth on the larger branches. I have well over 12 main bud branches and multiple smaller ones. Yesterday I saw my first pistils growing which is very encouraging. The plant is also starting the stretch; I powered the dimmable lights to their 100 % setting and repositioned the fan in an attempt to lower the temps. My temps still are running in the mid 90's F.

Has anybody attempted to use those small portable air coolers that are sold on Ebay/Amazon that use a small water reservoir that needs refilled about every 8 hours or so ???

Fed the plant today following the Fox Farms Schedule for the 1st week of flowering.
PH 6.3 and runoff was 6.7 PH
Tap water tested to 315 PPM and after adding nutes was 1500 PPM. Runoff tested to 8845 PPM. (that's high?)

Hi, Today I did a 2nd flush to wash out the salt buildup. I have been seeing more yellowing on the leaves. I've been in flowering now for almost 3 weeks and I definitely have small buds growing. I am going to wait another 3 -4 days and will then try pollinating a couple bud sites with the pollen from the Afghan Kush I have stored in the freezer.

I'm still dealing with very high temps in the grow tent (95 - 100 when LED is on) so I went ahead and ordered a 2nd 4" inline blower and parts. I'm planning on setting up a intake blower to bring in cooler air from outside the tent. Hopefully I will receive the parts by this weekend and get it setup. Would be nice to have temps under 90F.

Hello everyone. Today I setup the new fresh air intake system, I'm hoping for some cooler temps. Wild Thailand plant has been on 12/12 light schedule for 3 weeks now and today I pollinated 2 bud sites with the saved Afghan Kush pollen. I pollinated a bud site with each jar of pollen. The jar labeled 4-6-20 may have gotten damp at some point and am not sure if the pollen was viable? Only time will tell. Jar labeled 4-6-20 was from Afghan Kush plant that was identified as a male before beginning 12/12 light schedule. 2nd jar contained pollen from best looking male plant after being on 12/12 light schedule for several weeks.

Hi everyone. Yesterday I cleaned my Wild Thailand plant and have started the curing process in glass jars. It had been drying for 7 days. I ended up with 85 grams of small popcorn sized buds. Surprisingly I also found 8 seeds in the buds. They have been put into the refrigerator for cold storage for 2-3 months after which I will attempt to germinate the seeds.
