The air needs to be pulled through. Thats how all fans are rated. If you are using the filter to recirculate the air you can use a bigger fan. If its for exhaust then you will use a smaller fan. Take the cubic feet in the area and divide by 5. That will tell you how much CFM you need to control oder. Always round up. I ordered one that is almost double what I need. I just bought a cheap speed controller for it. This way I can dial the fan in and turn it up if I detect any oder. For my new grow room the can fan 66 would be good enough. Instead I got the 100
The stats below make it pretty easy to help determine what you need. This is for the Can Fan 100 and is an example
Specifications
Max Recirculating (Scrubbing) CFM: 1680 cfm / 2800 m³h
Max Exhaust CFM: 840 cfm / 1400 m³h
@ 0.1 sec contact time
Recommended Min Airflow: 420 cfm / 700 m³h
Prefilter: Yes
Flange: 8", 10", 12"
Dimensions: (with pre-filter)
·Outside Diameter: 42 cm / 16.5"
·Height: 100 cm / 39.4"
·Weight: 47kg / 103lbs.
·Carbon Weight: 37kg / 81.5lbs.
·Carbon Bed Depth: 6.5 cm / 2.56"
Max Operating Temp: 80ºC
Pressure drop at max cfm: 180pa / .75"wg
Recommended Can-Fan:
FAN Watts Consumed Filtered Air CFM
Max-Fan 14" 240 Watts 958 CFM
Max-Fan 12" 488 Watts 1260 CFM
Can-Fan 12" HO 310 Watts 825 CFM
Max-Fan 10" 228 Watts 834 CFM
Can-Fan 10" HO 267 Watts 641 CFM
Max-Fan 8" 167 Watts 605 CFM
Can-Fan 8" HO 278 Watts 600 CFM
As long as you stay within the recommended CFM range it should work great. Dont forget to factor in ducting length, and angles.
