6x90W UFO LED - 2x600W HPS Soil Grow - Medibud - Super Silver Haze - WW

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

$299 each @ prosourceworldwide. Since the Euro makes shopping in the US ridiculously inexpensive, that didn't make a huge dent in my budget. Energy is pretty expensive, though, so I'm not really looking forward to the bills once I start up the flowering room.

Since this is my first grow, at the moment, the HIDs are just sitting there and awaiting their victims... Once LED technology becomes really affordable and dependable (I've heard a lot about drivers and single LEDs failing, making the unit at least partially unusable - and not field replacable), I'll definitely go that route for flowering as well. For the next couple of harvests, I'll stay with HID for flowering.

I know, the CAD is worth more than the USD right now. I came across a thread on here where a guy was making his own LED lights for growing. A little too technical for me but since you're becoming a Master Electrician you might benefit from it. :) I'll see if I can find it.

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Mac, I'd love to build my own LED light - if I had the time...

I am self-employed, but that more or less means I have to divide myself between my profession, my family and my plants - and the "wife acceptance factor" of me tinkering away my spare time on something involving lots of small pieces the cat might swallow and wielding a soldering iron is... small. ;)

If my wife permits, I shall post some clone root porn later. *g*

Well, yesterday, I couldn't post anything - so here we go with the promised root pix:

Day 8/9 after taking clones, most have developed lots of strong roots, some short and stubby, others long and hairy. That areoponic cloner really works well, but the MediBud clones seem to root much quicker than the Super Silver Haze. So far, only one SSH clone has developed enough roots to transplant, so here we go:

I transplanted about half of the clones to 1L pots filled with Plagron grow-mix (which has some nutes) and watered them with 1/2 strength nutrients. Here are some of them:

Most are displaying signs of deficiencies, obviously foliar feeding didn't work exactly as planned. Still, they seem pretty vigorous, no drooping leaves (I removed the most depleted looking ones for good measure) and they have strong, healthy roots.

The plants in the veg room will be moved into the flowering room in the next couple of days. I'm about 80% through with light-proofing it and have already installed an intake fan (which really is incredibly silent), dividing the air flow between the flowering and the veg chamber (50/50). As you can see, I had to switch on the remaining two 90W LEDs as well as the 2x75W CFL fixture to deal with the copious amounts of foliage that have developed during the last weeks. The plants have more space now, but I'm afraid they'll tax the 2x600W HIDs in the next room to the limit.

Motherf*in' HID time!

Okay, I'll calm down now. But: today, I fired up the old 2x600W HID and moved the first plants (read: Super Silver Haze and anything else that has become too big, the naughty White Widow, too) into the flowering room to test the setup. I figured that if anything goes wrong (i.e. the plants suddenly self-destruct because the room is 2° C warmer than the veg chamber), not all is lost!

Here's a view of the "corridor" leading to the flower room; actually, the barrier is made of overlapping black/white and diamond reflective foil so that no light enters the flowering room during dark cycles and I still have a large enough entrance if I need to move stuff.

On the inside, of course, things are brighter... (sorry for the shitty picture, the lamps' frequency seems to interact with the camera)

I rearranged the rest of the plants under the LEDs and moved the first batch of clones to the center so they get the full CFL goodness.

Nearly all of the remaining clones in the aeroponic cloner have developed short roots by now, so I might be looking at a 100% rate. *knock on wood*

I didn't count on so many surviving, so I'd better get some more pots in here...

wow man nice setup! I may be moving to an indoor setup due to summertime heat here, Those are my first plants to get to that stage so I'm still learning thanks again for the input.

:goodjob:

Thanks for the feedback - I guess you'll like what comes next: I've moved all the veg plants to the flower room today (day 65). The flower room now looks like this:

I also transplanted all the remaining clones into pots filled with Plagron grow-mix and gave them a ~1/2 nute strength watering. With the space cleared in the veg room, I flipped the switch on the LEDs and now have only the CFL fixtures over the clones.

I was a little surprised to find all 36 clones had developed roots in the aeroponic cloner; didn't really count on that. :) Goes to show that a combination of aeroponics, scarification and rooting hormone works just as advertised!

Anyhow, since my flower room is getting quite crowded with just 13 plants, I'll have to shorten the new 36 plants' veg time a lot to still be able to fit them into the chamber when the time comes...

Oh dear, I wish I had completed the flowering chamber earlier - the biggest plants are already about 80cm high; if they double in size... better not think about that right now! XD

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

LED, You have a great grow space! I'm jealous! And some beautiful ladies in there as well:yummy:

I'm sub'd. Can't wait to see how your grow progresses.

:peacetwo:

Hey Mac, I think you did. ;) But compliments are easy to swallow, so don't stop! *g*

Concerning the jungle, I am starting to worry: should these plants double in size, I'll have some serious trimming to do, as I can only raise my lights so far before they touch the ceiling. Oh dear, what did I walk into... the next batch will be vegged much shorter - after all, there are 36 clones now instead of 13...

Super Silver Haze and MediBud are supposed to flower for about 8-10 weeks. That means I utterly miscalculated my growth schedule... :yikes:

Either I move the next batch in there before the first batch has finished flowering (read: it's gonna get really crowded in there!) or... strike that, there is no "or" unless I take over more rooms.

Lol, yeah! XD
I'm a catholic by upbringing - I bet I can chant holier than thou! *g*

I have decided on using strings to keep the girls in line - can't have them get all uppity and above their station now, can I? With the 36 clones, though, I'll have to get LSTish early on lest they grow wild and unkempt like their wayward mothers. An effective SOG with individual plants tied down is what I aim for, SCROG is too unflexible for my setup...

Well, I'm on holidays right now, the sun is shining in a clear blue sky, so I've got some time on my hands to decide what to do next. The girls are starting to flower, which brings joy to my heart. Nothing more beautiful to watch than (the non-violent side of) mother nature taking its course. ;)

LOL!! Holidays, man I wish I could see those!!!

Ah, what a great weekend! Sun, beach and more sun! Of course, the plants were not disregarded - I gave the clones and the ladies in the flower room full nutes, which they sucked up like there was no tomorrow.

Since I really needed to LST the three SSH giants, I used thick string to tie their tops down; apart from a nasty "snap" which I had to splint using duct tape and a stick, that worked quite well. I was really surprised to find that each of the bent main cola only needed a couple of hours to point straight upwards again. Weed really is an amazing plant.

Since pictures speak louder than words, here we go:

First, the clone area; I'll have to switch on the LEDs again, I think.

Then, there's the flower room. As you can see, there's some flowering going on...
