Mine are about 18 inches when its mh when i switch to hps i go to 24 inches.Hps is hotter and throws more light so they must be 24 inches from canopy so no heat stress or lamp burn practice makes better.

How high

As a rule of thumb between 12 & 18 inches for a 600w, air flow is important too as HPs can generate some heat that can be difficult to deal with esspecially in the hot summer days.

My 600s are about 12” away. As said, having some air flow under the bulb buys you some extra. Once in a while a branch will grow too close and get burnt. A few crispy white patches on the leaves tell you they're too close.

Maybe higher, I watched a growing video saying they are hanging above 30'' normally, but they have a lot of the lights, so maybe you can hang lower around 20~30'' ,
