Do you know what? Sometimes it’s exactly what my brain needs LOLBe careful. That tripe will rot your brain
I was one of the lucky ones and got out physically in one piece. Three guys I worked with weren't so lucky. 5 deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan did take a toll though. Mentally I struggle nowhere near as much as others but I have had issues and will for the rest of my life I'm sure. Therapy, cannabis, psychedelics and growing have helped me a lot in recent years. The community here has played a part in helping me cope through difficult times too.
Edit: More guys I worked with were injured but 3 lost their lives
I am so glad you did.
Governments enlist strong young boys. Their frontal lobe is still developing and that mix of testosterone, loyalty and love for their comrades and fearlessness has them running straight towards danger, well I think it does. I am so thankful to the bravery of our armed forces. I have a frequent flyer that I often nurse who was in Afghanistan. He was left with hearing damage and a broken heart. He came back and found he couldn’t fit in. Lost his wife, kids, now lives on the streets and is periodically brought in with ETOH abuse. We do what we can, patch him up send him back out. He is always so very grateful, it makes my heart hurt.
There are some great techniques to help with PTSD. I think of it as a dragon, it’s so big and scary, but with the right saddle and riding boots you can tame it to the point you don’t always fall off when you hit life bumps. Depression breeds depression, despair breeds despair, I really do believe it’s about retraining your thinking. Your horror story will always be there, but it doesn’t have to define you. You get to decide.
I‘m so glad you have found community support. And I’m sorry you lost friends and thank you for your service.
