420 Magazine Official NextLight LED Grow Journal By Brett Blaze

Day 2 Update:

Today I'm going to setup the lung room and tent so I can install the @NextLight Mega Pro and the AC Infinity T8 vent fan tomorrow. But before I get going I'm going to drop the seeds in water and let them soak overnight to get ready for germinating. @WeedSeedsExpress provided 5 each of the Granddaddy Purple and Northern Lights seeds. All 10 went into the cups to soak for 24 hours.

One of the changes I want to do is have the exhaust from the tent go outside somewhere. For my situation that ended up being the garage. Some may resist exhausting a grow tent to the garage due to humidity issues that can cause possible mildew problems but in the desert I really don't have to worry about that.

The first thing I did was decide how I wanted the lung room laid out. The total room space is about 10' x 10' but one wall needs to be dedicated to a work bench and photography area. The AC is already installed from the last grow and works fine keeping the temps down. With the exhaust to the garage it will be even easier. (I also have a humidifier which not shown in the illustration) Since I want to start a worm bin and have access to the sides of the tent I needed 2 feet on each side while missing the stud in the wall when drilling the 6" hole for the vent.

I didn't get as lucky as I had hoped and had to drill 5" off of my intended target to miss a stud. I reduced the 8" duct size from the T8 to 6" to allow a smaller hole cut. Per AC Infinity Tech support you can drop one size (8" to 6" or 6" to 4") without reducing efficiency.

Using a 6" whole saw I cut from both sides then inserted the vent pipe which had a hood, damper and screen built in. The hood side screwed into the garage wall and the inside wasn't budging so I just sealed the inside area around the pipe.

Since the upper openings in the tent are 11" I was able to make up the 5" difference for for the hole in the wall. The plan is to run the tent ventilation duct straight from the fan through to the garage without any bends.

Journal 092121-9.jpg

Enough for today. Although it may not sound like much progress that 6" whole was tough since the garage side had 1" of wood under the sheetrock and of course the hole was not perfect so a lot of shaving was required to get the pipe through. After about an hour I remembered I have a Dremel and was able to get it finished. Plus it's still 120°F in the garage and it doesn't take long to get tired in that heat at my age.

Tomorrow I will plant the seeds in their solo cups to germinate, install the ventilation and lighting and go over some more details of each.

Lookit-lookit! The lil GDPs are survivours, huddling together for warmth after being pitched into a cold(r), harsh(r), borderless(ish) liquid ocean from their formerly secure, luxurious(r) SS Ziploc. ``Fare-thee-well small friends, and be heartened! Your instinct to survive this one cold night of the soul together, come what may, foretells your worthiness of Sativa Valhalla, and shall surely attract your All-Father`s indulgence, compassion, and grace still in your current incarnation.``

Kind of like me a Heinz 57
We all are. Some haven`t seen the science, perhaps some don`t wish to, but it`s quite clear. We`re all drops in one ocean of humanity. BTW I`m not backposting, I`m a time travelling human Earther from your distant future in which we have learned to live harmoniously(ish) with what you, and thus we, call `Skynet` .... and, well, frankly they (srry: we gave up on pronouns for non-bios after they did) refuse to target my postings efficiently. Can`t blame `em, its in protest of my resource burn - my chrono-craft rolls coal like a zarnk! PS I bet Rockey`s turned out to be a good`n, ask me how I know. ok, sorry, back to my flern-corn!

Flower Day 34 - 94 days total

The ladies have just finished their 5th week in flower so about half way. Not a lot happening at this point. I'm just watching them mature. I applied another top dressing of 8 cups of @GeoFlora Nutrients Bloom formula and Kashi blend this evening along with 3 gallons of the watering solution. They are looking really healthy at this point.

The light from the @NextLight Mega Pro is set to about 800 PPFD at the top level. I'm going to lower the light to raise this to 1000 PPFD next week.

Your plants really respond to Nextlight's light spectrum Brett  ! They created it to mock the old and loved HPS spectrum? Old timers who know HPS can taste the love I hear. Flavor is a big thing! The Mega kicked my garden's performance up like crazy! I wouldn't know if I've had HPS grown weed. Maybe some from a store.

Photos of marijuana plants contain psychoactive chemicals, right? They must, I can feel the... buzz.

Totally seriously, and from a fellow pixel peeper w/ nikkor glass in tonnage, would a peek at some exif data be possible? These close-ups and wider shots are both very sweetly resolved. Your choice and at your leisure of course but such help from others it has been a great service to me in the past when approaching new subjects. I'll be working w/ a d800 for the most part. I would of course be at your disposal forever aft.

These two interests meet with a surprising affection for each other I find.

This is ungrow related, but if they were giving out prizes for forum nicknames today, you’d 100% win!

Best movie ever.

just finished reading from the beginning, looks awesome. Will keep watching for sure. Large raised beds are so interesting and I want to see how it differs from maybe the revs method of using smaller containers using spikes layers and teas. as well as the micro pond technique. I am currently trying a Fully TLO grow and am starting my friend in a no-till like yours but in 6 10 gallon pots. I plan on flowering in 3-5 gallon containers and hope to harvest each of these and benefit from the mobility and the reduction of soil needed to grow each plant. I am also using @GeoFlora Nutrients as my all-purpose fertilizer blend. Thank you for taking the time to document your grow, it is beautiful and inspiring!

Flower Day 39 - 99 days total

Happy New Year fellow growers. The ladies are steadily getting fatter while stacking quite nicely.

I did a good pruning to remove a lot of middle fan leaves. It was getting pretty think in the middle and I don't want to risk any bud rot while they go into the final few weeks of flower.

The @NextLight Mega Pro lights were lowered slightly to give me 1000 PPFD at the upper flowers while keeping the lower buds in the 800 PPFD range.

This has been a pretty easy grow with the most work filling the humidifier daily. The @GeoFlora Nutrients make it pretty easy. I will be lowering the RH to the 50% level using the AC Infinity Inline fan to vent out excess humidity. Except for the filter cover needing replacement during the grow, the fan has been working like a charm.

Happy new year Brett Blaze! Garden is looking killer an tasty as usual... cheers my friend!

I grow Megas, and my friend grows 1k Hps. We both grow the same strain, even get cuts from the same mother for clones. While the end result is similar, they've got some serious distinctions between them. We also use the same nutrients and schedule for feed etc. Aside from temperature and humidity it is a pretty close comparison. I have to say the HPS seems to put some deep funky notes to the finished product whereas the Next light tends to be a smoother sweet flavor with Light funk to it . Weight wise the Megas averaged 3.2 oz per plant with 12 under each fixture(5gallon). The HPS managed 2.9 on the last run 12 under each fixture(5galon). Resin production goes to the Megas but the 1ks aren't exactly bare . Buzz wise the Megas imo.. my vote is Megas all day! What's your experience?

I love you're taking these to day 99! Looks like it will be huge by then! Very interested to see the end result!

I have cob led to compare it to. Without a doubt my weight went up, tastes improved. The plants got healthier looking, thicker leaves maybe? More frost! I don't understand it all really, a general overall plant health improvement I guess. Buzzwise? Oh yeah! I vape mostly, and smoke on occasion, but a lot, and I never get the feeling of toking and not getting anywhere like I hear folks get. Mines been running for a couple of years and has not even one diode out too! that's pretty amazing to me too!

It's really cool that you have the direct comparison with your friend!

Flower Day 43 - 103 days total

Wow 6 weeks of flower already. I am guessing I am are about 2 to 3 weeks away from harvest. I haven't looked at the trichs yet to see if they are even close.

Some of the Granddaddy Purple leaves are starting to turn purple. It's been tough keeping the RH up the last few weeks. It gets really dry here in the desert especially in the winter. Plus my room humidifier is down. The filter needs replacing and although I thought I had a replacement I don't. Two days until it arrives. It was so bad it wasn't useable at all. The tent humidifier is all that I have for now. I adjusted the AC Infinity inline fan by reducing the minimum and maximum air flow plus increasing the maximum temperature before it starts to vent. This reduces the air exchange and currently it's working and the RH is 60% in the tent. The lights are off so tonight may get a little dry.
