The tomato crop has been outstanding this Summer largely due to the fact that I applied some techniques learned from cannabis research and here at 420. I purchased seeds from a very reputable seed bank which included some heirloom varieties. I found an excellent organic potting soil and added a few amendments. I started seeds in my garage , under LED grow lights early Feb in a controlled environment . During the coldest weeks my temps stayed in the low 70’s.
Early March , moved all my plants to the greenhouse and up potted 3 times.
I transplanted 12” to 16” very healthy plants to the garden ( in special pre amended locations ) April 1st ( which is way to early ) against many gardeners recommendations. I had to cover them a couple times because of low temps in April.
I used a topping method to manage the vertical height. I kept all the low growth cut back.
They were fed w/ Fox Farm nutrients from early on. They have good clearance around them for air circulation. The bed is a mix of excellent original soils with clover planted last fall as a cover crop.
This supplies nitrogen to the soil and the root system keeps it aerated. I just mow it occasionally and no weeds.
We were eating fried green tomato’s very early in June. My first BLT was mid June .
A dozen a day now is not uncommon. Many of my neighbor gardeners , that waited to plant , are still waiting on ripe tomatoes.
Just another benefit of the study of cannabis farming.
