2021 Outdoor/GH: 2nd Time Growing!

Hey @Abstrakt going to jump in and follow along if you don’t mind! Those are some pretty nice sized clones you got and seem to be taking to their transplants well so great job! As @FelipeBlu mentioned I’d be really careful with the transition to sunlight as I gave some of my girls a bad sunburn when I moved them outside back in June. Seems you’ve got a great handle on that with your shady setup though so keep up that great work. Really cool strains you’ve selected too, looking forward to watching them grow up.

:welcome:Thanks Prim! Appreciate you checking out my journal...I am also watching yours, they're looking superb.

Sunburn is definitely real! The Sherbet Creamsicle got a little too much already. I have been reluctant to give them any sun in the afternoon lately because it's been 90+ all week. But really happy I found the shade cloth that came with my greenhouse (which has reached 140F already).

Seeing the new growth the last couple days has been awesome to watch. They are starting to drink more as well.

Really excited to sample these genetics as they have alot of Chem/OG lineage and that's some of my favorite smoke.

The breeder sent me these extra notes:

Jazz Cabbage:
Classic sativa (stretchy)
Fills out the space well
Loves trellis/stakes/support at the end
Big heavy buds with weak stems
63 days flower time
Uplifting, clear headed smoke

Kabul Chem
Sinister, intimidating smell
Super strong, intense smoke
Stronger stems, stacked nodes
More indica growth
60 days flower time

Sherbet Creamsicle
Earliest finishing plant
7-8 weeks 50-60 days (after 60 turns purple)
Squat indica, slower growth
Grows indica, mellow sativa buzz
Not too trippy, non paranoia sativa high

Just stopped by to say hi and see how you are coming along.

I enjoy growing outside, but the heat and sun can be a real problem and watering everyday was a nightmare.

Stay safe, and grow well my friend,

Tok..

Thanks for the encouragement friend! I am enjoying facing the challenges of outdoors. Still fun for now

Happy growing!

Day 7

Sherb still not doing much and seems to be stressed from the heat we've had. Would it be beneficial to give her a mist during the hot afternoon as long as it's in the shade?

It should be okay as long as there’s no direct sun on the misted leaves. Raising the humidity could be beneficial if it’s very dry during the day.

Do the fabric pots or even the pavement around them ever get direct sun?

Awesome, I have already done it a few times the past couple days and they seem to like it.

The concrete and pots are getting sun most of the day at this point. It's just the easiest spot to keep them out of view for now.

I also noticed the soil likes to separate from these smart pots, didn't have this problem with last years fabric pots (non smart pots). Is there a solution to this?

Thanks for all the insight :Rasta:

If you can somehow shade those dark pots (in addition to the plants), it will help keep the roots cooler.

I don’t think I understand the difference between smart pots and fabric pots - I guess I thought smart pots were fabric. Anyway, the soil pulling away from the pot shouldn’t be a big deal - the root tips would get air pruned by the fabric in any case.

What you’re doing looks good. As long as the sides of the pots aren’t baking in the sun.

Heat up the pot of oil.. :laughtwo:
Agree with what Felipe said about misting, the leaves will burn if there are droplets of water on them in direct sun.
Also do you have anything that can elevate the pots off the ground? I bought these pot caddies from Amazon and love them as I can wheel the plants around easily into the sun or under the pergola when it’s raining, they’ll also allow the air to dry out the bottom of your pots while keeping them off the hot concrete helping to prevent root rot or moldy stains on your deck or patio.

These are great for providing air flow around the bottom of the pot - which can be very beneficial in a wet climate.

Keep in mind that the contact between the pot and the concrete will also wick down the perched water level, thus providing a larger unsaturated volume for root growth.

As long as the pot isn’t set down on concrete that was just blasted by the sun, sitting on the concrete should be okay.

Hey Felipe, curious about this, are you saying that by elevating the pot and exposing the bottom to air I’m essentially reducing the usable volume within which roots can successfully grow? Certainly not debating your statement as I’m on my first grow and know next to nothing and I’ve often wondered how friendly the outer and bottom couple inches of the pot are for root growth since they tend to dry out extremely quickly. Hoping to learn more if you can describe a bit more or point me to a link that explains?

Highya Primeau

Not at all. The stand, by exposing the bottom of the pot to the air, probably provides as much useable root volume. I was only pointing out that the wicking situation with the pot in contact with the concrete was probably just as good as the stand in that respect - so it wasn’t necessary, if the OP didn’t want the expenditure.

Well, this topic has certainly got me thinking...Isn't it true that the roots drink the water and the sun virtually has no purpose other than photosynthesis? If thats the case then wicking would be extra beneficial to keep the water available for the plants to eventually use? This is a new concept to me...fascinating!
