re: 2 - Unknown - Gifted

Ok... now I have read your journal and understand you want to know what strain the plants are... and as many have said, that just is impossible to clearly define. OldMedMan named his first unknown strains after his ex-wives! Maybe you can just find think of some interesting names for them? LOL

Yes, leaves are different between Indica and Sativa, as you noted. However, I've grown numerous strains and most are strong on the Indica side for heritage (I like the body, couchlock effect), yet their leaves are more pointed. The round leaf one I would bet money is a strong Indica... but the other may also be too.

Now-a-days I don't think there are many "pure" strains out there because of all the cross-breeding to make the multitude of strains that are now out there. Most are a mix.

You don't necessarily need to know the strain... if your friend only saves seeds from smoke she found extra good - that is the best info you need! If it smokes good - it's good!

As for lights... I am going to jump in and make a suggestion or two.

First, if you want the best growth... IMO, Metal Halide (MH) for vegging and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) for flowering is my top recommendation. I purchased lights that could convert back and forth between them and I have been nothing but PLEASED. However, they do put out a lot of heat.

If your area is small and heat will be a problem, the hmm... was it a T5??? light that you have is a very good one... and CFLs do a great job of vegging and a fair job of flowering. However, I think many growers end up adding more and more CFLs to get enough light throughout the plants as they grow in flower, so they often end up with the same wattage and heat as what one HPS/MH light would put out.

Halogens do NOT work. 4' shop lights do NOT work. I gave this same advice to a friend of mine. When he started in, he was trying to flower with 4 ft. shop lights and his plants were very very very sad looking, with light green leaves, weak plants, and when flowering had only tiny tops at 8 weeks (2 grams per plant at harvest). He then tried switching to halogen lights with the next series of plants and the plants improved with growth, but then got burnt real bad. Then he finally took my advice and invested in a 400w HPS-MH convertable light and now HE IS IN HEAVEN. And he can buy bulbs for it at our local Menards (important to him).

Also, since he is still using those 4' lights to veg, I taught him how to LST to fill his plants out and make the top areas more even - which is important since his light source is only effective by being very close to the plant. He is really pleased on his latest girls in veg now cuz he has multiple tops at the top level and all are receiving better light. He will be happy in the near future when he has many top colas! If you need any info on how to do that, there is a multitude of info here in 420magazine as well as pictures in my 2009 grow.

Maybe you prefer to top tho to fill out your plants - that's an excellent method too! However, if you learn to FIM (F*** I Missed), it is almost like topping, accept you kindof just take PART of the top instead of the entire top. OldMedMan just put a video in his journal giving a demonstration. Search for his current grow and go to the end of his journal to find this video.

I researched a lot before starting in back in 2009... and then I invested in convertable HPS/MH: two 1000w (for a very large room to flower) and one 250w (to veg - also many CFLs in there). I am SOOOOO happy for those choices of mine. Yes, they put out heat... but they sure do grow huge, incredible colas. Check out my 2009 grow (approximately pages 35 and up) to see what kind of plants they grow. IMO, they are the absolute best lights to use for the best plant growth.

Your light choice is an important one. Hope this info helped!!! If you want to grow 4 plants at a time - I recommend a 600w, or at least a 400w.

Just my 2cents! I am sure glad to meet you and wish you GREAT SUCCESS with your grow! I will try real hard to stop back and check on your progress!!! It is SO GOOD TO MEET YOU!!!

Okay, I know y'all are gonna kill me, but the Wonder Twins got their first haircut. All those Fan leaves were crowding and shading the inner growth. They were the fan leaves attached to the main stalk and had each a good 5-6 inch stem making them reach out and shade everything else. They had to go. That keeps the inner stems from stretching as long as possible and makes them strong for the next step. Besides, I like as little fan leaves in the flower as possible, to keep from shading the buds as they stretch out and begin their beautiful metamorphosis to a much-needed medicine.

The Indica in 1 day has almost doubled the size of the new stems growing inside and the dual head shot up like a weed (haha). The Sativa finally caught up to the other and is bushing nicely as well. From the looks of that one, I MIGHT not top it at all. LST is due to begin in 1 week. That's always nerve wracking as I slowly increase the stress to begin shaping them into a wreath at the bottom and let the stems poke out the sides as they grow upward. Topped ones almost invariably sorta resemble a peace sign when I harvest because of the way I do it: Sorta MST, I guess. But it works well with supercropping to create columns of buds and a nice little harvest. OR I've also seen some "J" looping techniques done that seem to work pretty well for keeping them low longer and spread wider to maximize light vs. height. A 4' box with 3'6" headroom is kinda pushing it, so keeping them low and wide is preferable to letting them bump their heads on the light. The floor of the box is 2x4 so that makes 2x2 for each plant to fill, and I plan to maximize that. The indica is actually ready now for the "J" looping, but I'll give it another week to get stronger before I tie the arms down. I know, I know, I'm unorthodox, but it works for me. At least it did for several years until I had to stop growing because the Texas heat got too much, if ya know what I mean.

Of course, if they are male as Granny420 pointed out as a possibility, they're both getting culled. I'm not ready to breed yet, and there's no reason to take up the space. I'll clone out Momma GDP instead of letting males defile my little girls! Besides, I have LOTS of cloning practice from way back when, and I'm not afraid to use it dammit all!

What the hell are those bulb/bubbles at the tops of the internodes? Never seen those on a plant this young, sorta makes me think "Male"

:high-five:Hi Honey!

Gees - that's an excellent shot of them there bulges... I'm with you, I've never seen anything like them either! I'll be watchin' to see if anyone else knows!

I'm interested in your fan leaf removal too... I have wanted to do this, but sure have read a diverse amount of info about it (strong views on both sides). I have some girls flowering that are soooo leafy. But I've always thought that if God gave em those leaves naturally - they must have a nutritional use to the plant that outweighs the shading. But many growers do just as you are doing and remove them. I'm feeling inspired (which is often dangerous!! LOL)... I may just have to go cut a few from specific areas of certain plants! I look at it like this. Fan leaf's main purpose is for photosynthesis. The other leaves on the growing stems do that to. However, since the fan leaf's ONLY purpose is to collect light and transpire, it grows to massive (relatively) proportions and shades the little stems that are growing. This often times makes them stretch to the light, or worse, THEY STUNT and take forever to poke through. This problem is compounded under fluorescent lighting as penetration, even with VHO lights like mine, is not as much as MH lighting. In the space I have, I do not have the area for a 3-4 foot headroom, so I use the T5 HO or VHO lighting as they can be hung much closer without burning...

This also lets me play with light positioning for varying plant heights, and is much safer when my daughter goes to take a look at Dadad's medicine, blow them kisses and say "Thank you for growing". :peace:My little flower child.:peace:

She's 3 and already has a green thumb. Right now, she's tending 4 late-season gourds, countless carrots, and has plans for purple potatoes in the spring, 4 color carrots, a pumpkin for harvest festival next year, and a cactus garden. To her, MMJ is simply that, another of The Mother's many gifts. She knows there's no soil for this one, and she doesn't quite understand it, but this one helps Dadad not cry out in pain and go to the dark room so much so she leaves it alone so as not to hurt it...

I think she might be trying to atone for digging up her birthday tree, just before her 3rd birthday, that I planted the day she was born.

re: 2 - Unknown - Gifted

Hey Honey!

:thanks: so much for inspiring me to take fan leaves the other day! I have a few strains going that have a ton of fan leaves and it sure did open up the center. These strains certainly have plenty more fan leaves to use for their nutritional/growing needs. I wanted to do that on my outside girls this last year, but I had read it slows them down for a short bit and I already had to harvest early, so I didn't take any leaves. But the other day I went CRAZY taking leaves off my inside girls and they sure look BETTER for it. A lot more buds (that now you can actually SEE) have good light.

I have two 1000w HPS lights going for my flowering girls... and just set up a 48"x48"x78" ($109 and shipped free!) mylar interior grow room for my new veg area. But instead of the 78" going upward (leaving me a 48"x48" grow area), I laid it on it's side so it gave me a 48"x78" floor. It is working wonderfully! I'm still adjusting lights in there, but it is a mix with a 250w MH, and various CFL's. I find CFLs to be wonderful to use in veg if you need any extra light. They use very little wattage. The 75w CFL bulbs use only 20W of electricity and are pretty cool, while the 200w CFLs use 42w of electricity and have more heat but put out real good light in the right areas.

:thumb:Your [mj] GIRLS (positive thinking!) look wonderful!

I don't have time to go visit all your journals - but did sneak a peak at other plants and they all look wonderful too! I love LST for filling the plants out and getting light to those lower areas to make them thrive and rise!

Your lil girl [daughter] sounds adorable! I have 6 grandkids (half girls, half boys) and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!! The only thing better than being a parent - is being a GRANDparent! :thumb:

You have 6 Half-Girl/Half-Boy Grandkids?! wow!

:rofl:You silly girl!!!

Actually, I am a retired RN (reg. nurse) and I used to work OB. While there, I once delivered a baby that was half boy and half girl...

.........
Supposed to be some time pass by here while the person I'm talking to says "Wow!" or something along those lines...
........

and then I say...

Yes, it had a penis AND a brain!

Yes, it had a penis AND a brain!

No offense, but that one I've heard. Funny, though it may be, I used to have a grandma that worked in maternity. You get where this is going? She had a potty mouth on her and held her tongue for no one. Not even us 13 y.o. punk kids invading her house, eating up her food, making a mess all over the place and then just leaving her all alone! <pause for effect> She wished we'd do it every day! Her words, not mine. Anyway, my cousins were fighting one day about who's the smartest. 1 boy 1 girl and they deferred to the wisest (wisest ass) in the house. And that's exactly what she said. funniest thing she'd ever heard, meanest for him. But they soon found something else to argue about and moved to the back yard to continue that argument outside (helped along by a flyswatter waving wildly behind their haunches).

re: 2 - Unknown - Gifted

Plants are looking good. Try topping/FIM with LST the plants will bush out faster. The bumps on the nodes are like extra weight supporting device for the branch, the bigger it is the better it can hold the branch in place. :}

Have already topped the Indica, and Sativa is yet to be done. I'm waiting to see if before I do, because if it is, I will clone it. If not....... well.....

Also, the stems that stand with the LST as I work them around, of-course I will SUPERCROP! hehehehe.
