4th_week_of_veg.JPG

Well I am entering into fourth week of veg. I topped everyone last week (the front right one is a week and a half behind, just topped yesterday). So far things have been smooth but I am sure I will be looking for some help here soon. Thanks for the warm welcome.

Sam, those look nice and healthy buddy! Looks like you are knocking it out of the park. Are you growing in coco?

Re: 1st Grow - Alaskan Thunderfuck x4 - Durban Poison - Blue Kush & Blueberry In Kind

I hear you, would be interesting to see the correlation between vigor and bean size, too. I had beans from Nirvana, they were NL and they were all so tiny. Had some germination problems but 2 of 5 grew, the others popped and died. I found another weird bean in a bud I smoked yesterday and it was like three half shells I wonder if it would pop polyploid lol the mystery beans I just received from Cody were super fat, too.

Re: 1st Grow - Alaskan Thunderfuck x4 - Durban Poison - Blue Kush & Blueberry In Kind

Morning everyone,

Finished up trimming the ATF 2.1 yesterday, that I harvested Monday. The buds are jarred and drying slow and low in the fridge for another week. I got quite a few seeds off her as well (all a result of accidental pollination) so I have quite a few of the ATF 2 seeds as well as the ATF 1 seeds I breed solely for seeds.

Now I have a decision to make. Looks like the xmas holiday picture is getting clearer and I don't have as much time as I thought I would for harvesting the last two ATF plants (ATF 1.2 and ATF 2.2). My plan was to take one of them either tonight or tomorrow and then the last one 5 days later. But we might have family visiting by then, so I have figure out if I want to just take both of them down this weekend or stick to something close to the schedule I wanted.

We have a lot to do around the house to prep for xmas and guests. Just not sure waiting until the 20th to chop the last one is a good idea. I guess I have until tonight to decide LOL.
I've got it, get a vacuum bag throw it in a box and FedEx it to me overnight, I'll spend Sunday trimming it and rebagging and Ill send it right back..... I promise LMAO.

Re: 1st Grow - Alaskan Thunderfuck x4 - Durban Poison - Blue Kush & Blueberry In Kind

Yeah I find the variation interesting. Like the pure ATF seeds, very small compared to the other ATF crosses.....is that common is stabilized strains or is it just a genetic trait of pure ATF? I just need to find something to use to take pictures with that will give a good size indication....say maybe an M&M. That way I can see a size difference between different strains or crosses.

I was giving this some thought a while back.....and I like to try to think about things relative to things I understand, especially in terms of genetics (which admittedly I don't know a ton about). Humans. Look at the differences in some people who have a ton of kids. Drastic difference between the sizes of offspring, with drastic differences in appearances. Well think about pregnancies. Some women have huge babies while other women have average or small babies. Often times, those huge babies don't necessarily grow up to be 'huge' people. And sometimes the runts of the liters grow up to be the biggest and healthiest. Some parents have 3-4 kids and there is little difference between them as they grow up. Other times I think a paternity test might be in order based on differences I see in kids (there ain't no way all three of them kids came from the same daddy.....ya'll know what I am talking about, we have all thought that when we see some families). I have to imagine that the variation and correlation in plants will be about the same as any other species. I don't know that I will necessarily find any correlation to seed appearance and how they will end up growing out, but it will be fun to document over several hundred and eventually several thousand seed germination cycles.

Good point with the babies van. I know when I got my strawberry kush beans I was a little hesitant because they were tinyyyy. But 4 for 4 on germination is okay with me. They could be the size of a golf ball for All I care as long as they sprout into quality cannabis. But is certianly very odd how much they vary....

But is it really odd, when you look at other species, especially other species where size dominance doesn't lead to feeding dominance like liters of puppies or cats? There, in those samples (puppies or cats), the size and order of birth generally are a good indicator of the youth growth cycle. When I picked out my labrador retriever from breeder, I chose the 1st girl born. She was the biggest girl born (2nd biggest behind the 1st male) and definitely the alpha female of the liter. She out grew all the other females by a long shot...which is common for liter type animals. But in species where there isn't an inherent tie in to size and feeding ability (like humans, or plants) the variation and general lack of correlation is fascinating.

I have seen that with my vegetable seeds. I would find a really nice looking tomato seed and think "man this one is going to be good" and end up being greatly disappointed in growth and fruit production. Other times I might see a small seed and think "Do I really want to plant this" and then I end up being blown away with how big it gets or in some cases they stayed smaller but just produced like crazy.

I separated the smaller and not as mature looking seeds from the pretty ones I bred. Makes me want to start popping a less healthy looking seed along with the nice pretty healthy looking ones and see how often the ugly duckling can compete or ever grow better. This is something I definitely intend to start paying attention to and documenting.

My Blue Dream seeds were small, I had a slight concern, but I knew that seed size has little impact on plant vigor. It really is an exciting part of cultivation. One day I might dabble in breeding but for now I have no problems growing and smoking the results lol

Start yer holiday prepping and wait till the last second to havest, pull an all no nighter trimming... And BAM....yet done

Easy peasy.....

Nope...cant work....it had to hang dry for 2 days the low and slow in the fridge

Re: 1st Grow - Alaskan Thunderfuck x4 - Durban Poison - Blue Kush & Blueberry In Kind

DJ Short once said that he never passes up a mutant or a plant that's visibly different from its siblings. A lot of times they end up being the keepers.

Yes growing in coco. It just seemed easier than DWC to start out and I don't care for the issues surrounding soil. The rest is a 4x4x 6.5' tent under a Mars Hydro Epistar 320. I am going to let them go until the first of January then flip them. These are all Nirvana (Northern Lights, Jock Horror and AK48). Interesting take on your experience with Nirvana NL's all my Nirvana's popped and the one NL is a much bigger plant than her sativa hybrid counterparts while the other NL is pretty much even with the others.

When i find anything from DJ I read carefully, his work speaks for itself

You bring up some interesting point about genetics in terms of breeding. Humans are different because the breeding is random but you are right sometimes you wonder about the milkman overstaying his welcome when you look at some families but the dog deal with selective breeding I see more consistency in the higher end breeders. I am into Rottweilers and have had pretty good luck getting what was advertised over the years. As they are (for good and bad sometimes back crossing quite a bit).

What I wonder with plants is how much the environmental factors affect the consistency in the offspring. The growers control so much of what goes on with these plants and then tailoring the section process based on the results. So if a breeder is growing in hydro with CO2, controlled temps, ideal PH, RH, nutrients and lighting uses those results with their breeding selection based on that environment then the seeds were grown in a closet under limited ventilation/control with CFL lighting the offspring could be all over the map.

My biggest challenge with starting this growing adventure is seed and seed bank selection. So far so good but I will see how the whole journey goes. I look at Humbolt, Ace, Sensi, Nirvana and some others as being sound providing your environment is good. Some of these other companies crossing stuff is enough to give you a headache. I am just looking for some constant producers. I rely on the journals of others to track what seems to be working and what is not.

On a side note as far as seed size goes..... I was a little shocked going from bag seed back in the day to this modern strain product. I thought my Nirvana seeds were small until I got my Train Wrecks from Green House Seed Co. Those things look like mini-me's. lol

I'm kinda the same Sam, just recently popped 2 white cookies and 2 Crown Royal. The CR were wayyy smaller in size but in 3 days they were up and I skipped the paper towel all together. My Whitecookies took 5 and 8 days respectively. Size cannot matter, although definitely strain and gene dependant.
