When I used soil I mostly germed them right in it.
Using the paper towel method I didn't usually wait longer than the taproot just poking out a little.
From what I've seen a 1/2" root would be fine.

I don't (or didn't) but I germinate right in the soil now to keep the seed based microbes with the seed.
But when I used the paper towel method, I'd swim the seed for up to a day and then take it out into a moist towel with some warmth. As soon as I saw proof of life I'd put it in the soil, taproot tip pointed up.
I always start the seed in a moistened plug straight from the package.
I'm a tap root down guy if it's longer but I have broken them off of they get too long.

looks like the way to go. Heading out today to get some, and a tray to catch run off. I still have nursery 2x4 tent equipment stuff to get delivered, an inline fan and the ac infinity heater. Looking forward to see if a little bump in the temp helps the seedlings. I have always been leery of heaters, this will go outside and double as an inlet of air to compliment the exhaust inline fan.
My hope is red solo cups will house them until i can “weed” out the males…

i have faith that at least 3 of these will surface!! ive got 3 sprouts now that came from a collector, they were 10+ yr old seeds and ive gotten them all to pop! no special nothing or other, just soil n water.With every new development in my growing, theres always something new to learn.
Yup, my only desire is weed out the males (sorry guys) who knows how many living plants i’ll be getting anyway, these seeds have been around awhile m, 12ish years

A mature seed stored in dark, dry, mild temps, can last several decades without much loss in viability.

I start them off in damp soil. Damp soil is pretty much the same as damp paper towel. But it comes without the hassle of handling the sprouted seed so the tap root does not break. And planted in the soil the seed figures out which way is up.

Only advantage to using a paper towel before media is space and time watching a pot to see if the seed popped. Patience, positive attitude, and a bit of space easily replaces the paper towel.

I did one old seed the beginning of last year and call it Mexican X-Factor. She was all sativa around 19% thc. I did not test her but I was impressed with the plant it self. Grew well and easy and had some great color in flower. I have images if you would like me to post one.

Went to my supply store and picked up some potting soil, pretty straight forward with hope to not burn these little sprouts.
I transplanted 3 into solo cups with a dash of water. Turned the lites on low, tomorrow my heater arrives…
Im hoping some fake springtime warmth will encourage them, 75°-80°

Nice to have a little warmth in my nursery, installed the thermoforge, pretty easy to setup….i know its only like a 7° difference, but its peace of mind to see the tent in the mid 70’s

Hey KL, Welcome….yeah it was a complete accident i was cleaning out some boxes of stuff and came across the collection of seeds, who knows how many more will hatch
