Rastas' First Grow

Hi 420,

I’m VERY new to cannabis. I’ll keep this bit short as we’re all here for the same reason. Serious mental illness, half a lifetime of being pumped full of prescription medication, jack of it all, discovered cannabis in my thirties *YAY!* and decided I want to grow my own strains that work for me.

Now, as I’m so new, I don’t know what those strains are. I’ve tried a couple of sativa dominant strains, as I have indica dominant.

Prior to purchasing any equipment, I ordered seeds. I don’t exactly want to spend a few thousand on my own grow tent and have nothing to grow in it.

I now have a colourful assortment of seeds to start my own garden. I selected four different strains from a seed bank who had a special on for the month where they gave away a bunch of freebies. So I have eleven strains to choose from.

This is the first post for my own grow journal. This week I will be buying all of my equipment for the grow tent. At this stage, it looks like I’ll be going with a Mars II 1600 from Mars Hydro. I'll put up new posts and pictures as I add things.

But first, here are the seeds. There are 4-5 in each bag.

Barney’s Farm - Liberty Haze (fem)
Sagamartha Seeds - Rhode Island Skunk (fem)
Dr Krippling - Bubba Yum (fem auto)
Royal Queen Seeds - OG Kush (fem)
Royal Queen Seeds - Northern Lights (fem)
Vision Seeds - Super Skunk (fem)
Green House Seeds Co. - Jack Herer (fem)
Royal Queen Seeds - White Widow (fem)
Feminised Seeds Co. - Critical (fem auto)
Dutch Passion - Power Plant (fem)
Royal Queen Seeds - Bubble Kush (fem auto)

If this was your very first grow, what seeds would you choose from this stock?

I reiterate. I am BRAND NEW to cannabis in general. I’ve been studying the effects of the plant for the treatment of various afflictions for quite a while, but my usage/experience is limited (only since Feb).

I’ve got a ton of questions to ask you folk, but I’m doing my best to answer those on my own by spending time perusing the forums.

If at any stage (or every stage) you see something out of the ordinary, could use tweaking or is just plain wrong, PLEASE SPEAK UP!

:thanks:

Okay, so it appears evident that unless I've got a grow tent, big lighting and some nice leafy porn, no one actually gives a flying fuck about these posts.

So, these are the strains I've chosen for my first indoor grow. I'll be keeping it simple. I will germinate 6 seeds and go from there. If I am capable, I will set up a propagation kit and start cloning. But baby steps first.

Vision Seeds - Super Skunk (fem) - "Super Skunk is also extremely easy to grow and has a dependable all-round performance which makes it the ideal strain for beginning growers to start with. She is highly resinous and good for a very strong skunk flavor and smell. Super Skunk produces a seriously pleasant high."

Dutch Passion - Power Plant (fem) - "Powerplant (mostly Sativa) was developed by us in 1997 from new South African genetics. This strain has been inbred only, never hybridised. Very rich in THC. It is a strain with an enormous grow potential. Indoor as well as in a greenhouse the plants have an enormous yield. Indoors flowering starts already one week after turning back the lightcycle to 12 hours."

Royal Queen Seeds - OG Kush (fem)
- "This one's an extremely strong cannabis strain, which many experienced smokers list as one of their favourites. The effect is as powerful physically as it is mentally: though it acts like a Sativa, it actually has mostly-indica genetics. This is a strong and complex plant and an excellent seed to preserve in your collection."

I will germinate in a few days. I'll be dropping in to my local hydro store to have a look at their products. But I'm almost there as far as what I need. Money is not a concern, but this is purely for me only so I'm not about to buy a factory and 20 LEDs.

Next update will be the tent and related accessories.

Thanks Camper! I'll have a read about that strain in a minute. I love the idea that we can post pics and questions up and everyone appears to be so keen to keen to help out. I wasn't gong to do a journal, but considering my knowledge is so limited at this stage, if someone jumps in and prevents me from making a massive error then it's worth documenting!

Do you have a grow journal for the Candy Cane?

Yeah, I have a journal...under Camper's first grow - candy cane - - 420 is a great site and resource....good advice and friendly folks...looks like you're ready to do some growing :)

Nice selection Rastas! I would go auto imo for the first grow to get your feet wet. You'll be happy with that mars! :thumb: happy growing.

Thanks luvin, I was contemplating autos because I do know they're a little more forgiving, but I did want to have a go at cloning too (maybe getting ahead of myself here?). I'll take your advice on board. I'll still do the fems and I will also do an auto or two as well. Thank you :)

Ready to watch this one! I have a Mars Reflector series and I have no idea what to expect from a Mars light. My grow started a week ago so we will see! Good luck! Nice assortment of seeds, I drooled a little.

If you have never grown before, I would stay away from the Sativas until you get your chops. If you do decide to grow them, we will help you. I used to grow a decade ago and I'm jumping back in with the grow in my journal. Go to the other current journals and ask questions on those journals too. The people here will help you and welcome you. Good luck Rastas. If you have any questions, let me know. I'll answer them or I will send someone to answer them.

Awesome. I do have the ability to grow outdoors later in the year (I have to wait till September here in Aus). Surprisingly, my mother is an avid gardener and is more than happy to allow me to grow on her property. She even said she'd take care of the plants for me :)

Would you suggest I save the sativa/s for an outdoor grow instead?

If so, from the seeds I have available, what would you personally suggest for my first indoor grow? The ones I selected I chose because from the information I have gathered thus far, they're more suited to a beginner.

Super Skunk and OG Kush seem to be a safe bet - I think?

Thank you so much for your input. I will definitely be checking out your journal. Still learning to navigate my way around these pages :)

Thanks Asesino! I have no idea what to expect from anything! So we've got plenty to learn :)

I think having just those two strains should be good to start. The power plant outside would be killer. You can train them to behave indoors but I figured you were trying to keep things simple to start out. Northern Lights is a good strain to start with too. If you are growing in just one tent, I would do photos and autos separate.

Just don't over think it Rasta lol..I've killed a plant from loving it to much. Best advice imo is to not over water when they're young or any other time for that matter. that's one of the biggest things new growers do and its not hard to overwater either.. just relax and they'll grow, its just a weed lol.. :cheer:

I'm new as well and just started my first Grow. I chose Barney's Farm LSD for my first seeds to grow because the description said it was resilient. Out of the seeds you have I would say Northern Lights might should be on the list for your first grow. Everything I've read about it says it's one of the easier strains to grow and great for first timers. I actually bought some Northern Light seeds myself and plan to grow it next.

Good Luck! and Have Fun!

One other thing I would point out as another first time grower. My goal was to have as few variables as possible to make it easier the first time. With that in mind I would also recommend you stick to all Indica's. From what I read Indica strains will grow thicker and shorter and Sativa Strains will grow thinner and taller. Also a lot of times they will have different recommended flower times. Because of the differences I would think mixing strains for a first time grow might not be the best idea. Especially growing in a tent and having to manage light height. I'm new though so this was just my train of thought as a newbie. :)

OK! Got it!

It's funny you said that. That's the reason I wrote the flowering time on the front of the bags, but it obviously slipped my mind when I picked the three. I figured it would be tricky to adjust the light height and also the timing come bloom if they're different strains.

I'll stick with OG Kush and Super Skunk and since you say so, I'll germinate a couple Northern Lights too! I'll be sure to subscribe to your grow.

Just picked up my tent!

Pictures to come shortly. No expense spared.
