Marijuana has a history that dates back thousands of years all the way to Ancient Egypt where cannabis was used for its healing powers. Now, marijuana is consumed for recreational purposes, and many lawmakers are taking action to legalize the drug completely. Many individual states have already taken action by legalizing the drug both for medical and recreational purposes. Even the Prairie State, Illinois is taking initiative to legalize cannabis, with a marijuana history that dates back to 1931, before the federal government even took steps to ban the sale, consumption, and cultivation of marijuana nationwide.

In 1931, Illinois banned the recreational use of marijuana six years before the national law was passed. These views changed in 1978 though, when the state passed the Cannabis Control Act to legalize the medical use of marijuana. In order for this to take effect, the Department of Human Services and State Police were required to create new drug policies, but to this day, neither has taken action. Illinois did eventually become the 20th state to legalize medical marijuana with the introduction of the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act in 2013. Now, lawmakers are moving even further to fight for the legalization of recreational marijuana since the drug was decriminalized as of 2016.
