A pungent stink is hanging over Nailsea — with shoppers complaining the town smells of cannabis.
People visiting the town center on Friday noticed the stench as they were getting their groceries — with some speculating police had found a cannabis factory in the town.
The smell is so strong, people have been complaining of it filtering into their homes and businesses.
People have taken to Twitter to complain of the whiff. One person posted: "Is it just me or does Nailsea stink of weed???
Other people have posted on the Nailsea People Facebook page. According to people in the town the smell has been hanging over Nailsea for the past few days.
Jacqui Nelson posted: "Thought I was imagining it! Left my bedroom window open last night, woke up about 3ish with the room absolutely reeking of it!"
Gill Followell posted: "Yes I noticed it the other day. I did wonder if someone had been composting their cannabis plants!
Rachel Banham posted: "It has for the last few days."
And it seems the whiff is not only getting up the noses of Nailsea people. Others have complained of a similar smell in Clevedon, Portishead and along the A370.
Mike Benfield said: "It smells from Nailsea down the A370 to junction 21."
Charmaine Searle posted: "My friend who lives in Cleeve said it smells over there and apparently in Clevedon, Portishead and Yatton."
Some people have been speculating on social media that the pong is actually some sort of pungent fertilizer being sprayed on local fields by farmers.
And it seems they are not far wrong.
According to police the smell is the result of the annual blackcurrant harvest and not due to a large cannabis operation
A police spokesman said: "The smell is not specific to one town and it is right across the area.
"We are aware of the issue. The smell is the result of the blackcurrant harvest across the area.
"People do not need to be concerned."
