The safety of vaping is highly questionable, many studies have time and again proved that the liquid used in electronic cigarettes is heated at a high temperature which produces heavy metals that are as harmful as tobacco smoke from regular cigarettes. Read—E-cigarettes do more harm than good.
However, Swiss researchers have gone one step ahead and have developed an e-cigarette cannabis liquid for medical use. They say that vaping marijuana would be safer than smoking it and definitely better than popping a pill. The scientists call it 'therapeutic cannavaping' and believe that it would be an excellent alternative to current treatments that are in the form of a syrup, pill, mouth spray, skin patch, suppository or a cigarette. Read: Number of people who smoke e-cigarettes in Britain has doubled.
According to the study published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports, the team was inspired by the practice of dabbing Butane Hashish Oil (BHO). They extracted cannaboids from cannabis with butane gas and the resulting extract was atomized using vaporizing devices. This method of extracting BHO contains up to 70-80% THCa which when lightly heated produces THC or tetrahydrocannabinol which is the psychoactive agent.
The study-
When used for recreational purposes, dabs are burnt and the fumes are inhaled. But for the study, the researchers mixed their BHO extract with e-cigarette liquids at different concentrations and then vaporized the liquid with an e-cigarette machine and tested the vapours for its THC content.
The researchers believe that this method for using medical marijuana would be safer than conventionally used oral administrations in the form of pills and tinctures that are erratically absorbed in the body and have a poor biodisponibility. Cannabis is medically prescribed for pain relief, appetite stimulation, nausea reduction or the relief from muscle spasms. The scientists also discuss the safety of this method because of the carbonyls and volatile toxic compounds present in the vapors that are formed during the heating. Generation of contaminants from glycerin and propylene glycol and toxic effects from inhaled flavorings have to be considered.
